How it feels when you're trying to find a fanfiction to read of a character but 90% of it is just pure smut or NSFW content
"Why can't the freaks on AO3 just go and make a site for all the gross stuff and leave AO3 alone."
Because AO3 is that site. Because AO3 was that site long before you decided AO3 was better than the sites you bullied us off of before, and I can promise you if someone somehow comes up with a fanfic site you like better specifically for the 'gross stuff' you'll try to bully us off that too so you can benefit from it.
AO3's specific core purpose is to preserve fanfiction, yes, but it was also instigated as a host site for the fanfiction that kept getting yeeted off other platforms like Wattpad. Its designed to preserve all fanfiction, not just the fanfiction you, personally, think is 'allowed' to be written.
AO3 is the site for all the gross stuff the freaks make. We've been there just as long as you. We've been funding it just as long as you have. AO3 has specifically said you have a place here. The timeline was literally:
Wattpad/FF.net/LiveJournal purge fanfics > AO3 is born > The people who's fics got purged moved over to AO3 > AO3 gains popularity as the best functioning site > The people who pushed for the fics to be purged off Wattpad move to AO3 > The same people try to push for AO3 to purge fics.
AO3's source coding is open-access. You go make a polished, strict, rigid site where nothing 'icky' is allowed. You go make a site where you can control what is hosted. We already have our space.
AO3 was specifically made for the stuff likely to be purged from other sites.
It was built around "we need to own the servers" so we wouldn't have to deal with anyone else's judgment calls about what was acceptable in fanfic: Not corporate sponsors, not evangelical religious groups, not "save the children" activists... and not other fans who think that The Gross Stuff should be banned from public view, only shared via private email after you've sent in a request heavily laden with special keywords.
Some of the founders remembered when slash fanfic was kept under the table at the dealer's room, distributed with brown paper wrappers only to people who knew to ask for it specifically.
And they said: Fuck that. Our art is not a crime and we're not going to be ashamed of it. If you are ashamed to have your art next to it - there's a whole wide internet that's ready to host your G-rated genfic.
AO3 was built for the stuff that was unwelcome elsewhere.

good news everyone
itās good for you to look at things that make you lightheartedly say āewā while snickering like a little kid and then carry on. i say this genuinely. it will shift your knee-jerk reaction towards things that mildly disgust you away from fear
sometimes itās bugs. sometimes itās a funny-looking doll at an antique store. sometimes itās bad art that you made.
and sometimes itās someone elseās food preferences. sometimes itās a weird-but-normal thing that human bodies do. sometimes itās someone elseās kink.
obviously, be respectful, and keep the reaction in your head when youāre in public. but the sooner you can separate disgust from fear, the sooner you can show empathy
I absolutely love this message and completely agree with it, but before I read the "be respectful" part, I thought
And sometimes it's a fuck ass cyber truck in the streets, and all respect disappears. Those deserve no sugar coating of my disgust for them, and I will wage war upon that fact.
I cried watching Project Hail Mary btw
Original post by @morallygrayautisticscientist here, this post was so funny I decided to draw it lol.
For those of you who joked about Stratt projecting her period cramps on Grace, I drew that too here.
Panel by panel below:
Ummm she's literally sensitive :/
You know who you are.
I know itās not pride month anymore, but I though this would be funny
Danny had done something wrong. Heād fucked up enough that Diana had to actually punish him. A rare situation considering that Danny, a hero and one whoās worked solo for years, rarely made mistakes big enough to deserve punishment or went against Diana. From the moment sheād rescued him from Jack and Maddieās lab heād been a total mamaās boy. Still, itād happened and now Diana had to act as a proper parent and punish him for it.
Now then, how do Bruce and Clark do this? āYou are grounded,ā the tone sheād said this with made it clear that there was no way around it.
āBut what about my hero work?ā It wasnāt a well known fact outside the hero community, and even then it still wasnāt well known, but Danny actually needed to be a hero. Heās a guardian spirit. While his obsession is space he also needs to make sure people are safe.
āOther than work,ā Diana agreed easily. She wasnāt about to deny her boy one of his base needs, as confusing as it was at first for her to understand that heroism is a need for him. āAnd no TV,ā she tacked on mainly because it didnāt seem like a punishment so far.
Danny sheepishly mentioned with a shrug, āMy TVās broken.ā Ah. Right. It had been broken by one of her boyās rouges. The hunter. Skulker she thinks Danny called him. The hunter should hope she never got her hands on him or heād learn sheās not nearly as forgiving as her son is.
āThen no computer,ā she pivoted. It made sense to her. He used it a lot to play games with his friends back in Amity Park.
āI need the computer for school,ā Danny once again corrected her. Sheād forgotten that too. Her boy had asked to go to school online so he wouldnāt be beholden to the stringent schedules of a typical education. Ever since heād started going to school online his grades had soared and Diana couldnāt be prouder of him. Heād always diminished his intelligence, comparing himself to his elder sister, and it had only gotten worse since his partial death at the hands of his parents negligence. The ghosts her boy fought at all hours of the day and night made it all but impossible for him to complete a school day unimpeded or to finish his homework without it being damaged. Diana had made it a mission of hers to help her boy see himself for the amazing young man that he is.
āThen uh,ā she was really grasping at straws here. She couldnāt take his TV away since itās broken, he needed his computer for school, and she couldnāt ground him from his obsessions without hurting him. What would Bruce do? Wait, thatās it! āNo Cassandra.ā
The girl in question popped her head out of the vent above and slightly behind Danny with a cry of āWhat?!ā Diana was woman enough to admit that yes, she did startle. Both at the girlās presence since she hadnāt had even known she was in the state but also because of the girl using her voice. She hadnāt thought it was one of the girlās vocal days. Still though, considering who it was who startled her she wasnāt too embarrassed by that fact. Cassandra was the stealthiest of Bruceās brood, including the man himself.
Simultaneously Danny interjected incredulously, āNo Cass?!ā
āNo Cass!ā She repeated herself. She was proud of herself for having picked and appropriate punishment even as both teens looked crestfallen.
DPxDC idea #3
The DC universe has its own Danny Fenton.
The problem?
He's dead.
Dead.
The portal accident killed him years ago. The Fentons buried their son, mourned him, and somehow managed to move on.
Then a dimensional breach brings Danny Phantom from another universe into the DC Universe.
At first, nobody notices anything strange. The Justice League just sees another teenage meta helping during crises. But eventually reporters get clear footage. Facial recognition software finds a match.
Danny Fenton.
Deceased.
The boy buried years ago.
Now Maddie, Jack, and Jazz are forced to watch news reports of their dead son flying alongside heroes, So they chase him wanting answers.
And Danny is stuck trying to explain something impossible:
"No, I'm not your Danny."
The worst part?
Nobody believes him.
Because how do you tell grieving parents that their son really is dead... and you're just an alternate-universe version who happened to survive?
