Supporting Abortion Funds in the South

Since we last posted about Texas’ abortion ban (SB8), there have been a number of abortion restriction related bills passed. Just this week both Florida and Kentucky passing bills with the latter banning abortions after 15 weeks effective July 1, 2022. Now more than ever, it’s important to local abortion funds in states imposing restrictions on reproductive rights, particularly given that these bans often cause the most harm for those who are low income and/or POC.

I really want to emphasize this. I live in Mississippi. We have only had a single abortion clinic for many years, and it is this very clinic who was decided against in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson. This state has trigger laws; the clinic has, at most, days before it is forced to close. There is nowhere else. There has been nowhere else in a long time. And we’re geographically dead center of all these red states - there is no state line we can cross, we’re not even on the Mexican border, there is no day-trip drive we can make to anywhere. I know this is true for a lot of other states as well, but... I have this feeling of profound dread that Mississippi will end up vilified for being the cause of this evil. For being the source of the straw that broke the camel’s back. And there are so many, many people here who will suffer and die because in national politics we are always the forgotten state, the lost cause, the state so far behind enemy lines we’re not worth fighting for.

Mississippi is not politically strategic to the left. It can’t be flipped. It’s the end-stage success story of the right - we’ve been underfunded so effectively for so long that we are like a limb in a tourniquet. We are dying. It’s hard to fight when there is no blood, there is no oxygen left, everything you have is rotting around you. To the left, I fear that we are perceived like gangrene - we need to be excised so the rest of the body can heal.

But please, please, we are not dead, we are here, we are crying and screaming knowing that the evil came from inside our own house, and the evil is coming for your houses now too and we’re so sorry but it’s still in the house with us and we are so scared.

Happy Pride 2025. This post is 5 years old, and I’m in equal parts proud of it, and annoyed by how chaotic and tacky it is. So I’ve decided to make a new version: one where all the additions are in a single reblog, and with integrated image descriptions (thank you @oddler14 for providing most of these back then!). I would love it if people reblogged this version instead, even if I understand the previous version is much more widespread on Tumblr.

I am one of the people who, for a long time, didn’t feel queer enough. Specifically, as a nonbinary person, I struggled for a long time to believe I was trans enough to even deserve to label myself as trans. This post was the start of my journey unlearning that shame and guilt, which was caused in part by the gatekeepy rhetoric that was predominant in many online spaces. Today, I am confident and joyous in my trans, nonbinary, queer body and mind.

To my 20-year-old self, and to anyone else who might need to hear this: you are queer enough. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. And always, always remember:
