Joe Jusko Work Method

I work on unprimed hot pressed heavyweight Crescent 115.6 watercolor board. I loved cold pressed Bainbridge 80 illo board for decades, but you can’t find it anywhere and when you do, they no longer make the dbl thick one.

I use W&N Art Masking Fluid. Best I’ve ever used. I have used others and they destroyed the surface. You need a good rag content board. I first read about it in a Patrick Woodroffe book back in the 70’s. I’ve used it ever since. I apply several coats as the thicker it is, the easier it peels off. It’s made for watercolors, obviously so you can’t paint too thickly or you’ll never get it off.

I use Liquitex Soft Body acrylics as they cover with fairly thin applications. If I get a “lip” or ridge after I remove the mask I just scratch it down with a fingernail. If you use it for airbrushing you HAVE to seal the paint with something like Krylon before rubbing it off or all your work will be destroyed, as airbrushed paint sits on the surface of the support and doesn’t bond with it. I found that out the hard way back when I still used an airbrush. lol Oils would have to be TOTALLY dry before removing the masking fluid.
