Not only is Crater Lake National Park in Oregon one of the best places to watch a sunset, it’s also one of the snowiest places in America. So yesterday while tired I came up with a Star Wars theory. It’s not something I believe one hundred percent but there is enough evidence that I’m like...wait a fucking minute here. It lives in my brain rent free and I needed to write it down somewhere, don’t come at me.

C-3PO is a little bit force sensitive, or has a connection in the force to the Skywalker family. (I know, he’s a droid and that would be impossible, but listen, this has been keeping me awake at night.)

My supporting evidence:

He was made by a young Anakin, who could easily have infused the droid with a little bit of his power and love for his mother. He probably wouldn’t even know he was doing it. He built the droid to help his mother, and a force user as powerful as Anakin (especially an untrained one who may not know how to rein it in) could have forged a connection to his family via the force while constructing 3PO, or infused the components with a connection to the force itself. Anakin’s power was always shown to be strongly linked to his emotional state, and he loves powerfully, from his mother to Padme to eventually his children.

When Luke is trapped outside the base overnight on Hoth, R2 quotes the statistics of his survival. 3PO, in an effort to comfort Leia, says that R2 may be incorrect - to my knowledge, the only time he disputes a statistic. The next day, it turns out that 3PO was right and Luke did indeed survive. One explanation for his statement is that 3PO knew (or ‘felt’) Luke was alive because of a connection to the force itself or a connection to the Skywalker family through the force.

3PO correctly says “there’ll be no escape for the princess this time” in one of his first lines in A New Hope. Of course this is to set up the introduction of Leia shortly afterward, but it could also be that he felt the presence of Vader about to come onboard.

When R2 and 3PO split up on Tatooine in A New Hope, 3PO chooses the correct direction (or at least, the direction he needed to be going in). He would never have encountered Luke and Uncle Owen if he had picked a different direction and avoided the Jawas.

He’s said the recurring line “I have a bad feeling about this”, usually reserved for force-sensitive characters. This point is a little shaky since K2-SO also said it in Rogue One. (Han has also said this line, and I separately believe that he is at least somewhat force sensitive as well.)

Because at some point it got folded in under “problematic,” and now every damn thing that has Unfortunate Implications or deals with sensitive topics indelicately enough to raise hackles or gores somebody’s sacred cow is treated as a grave injustice or a threat to society. Online activism culture has lost the vocabulary to express “this deals with touchy stuff in a way many people might find inappropriate, and you should probably avoid it if insensitivity on this subject gets you angry/upset, but it’s not promoting hateful ideas or demeaning people or affecting anything but my opinion of the creator’s sense of tact.”

I think this really an important post. We’ve fallen into such a rut of “everything is right or wrong, no inbetween” that stuff that’s merely in poor taste is conflated with things that are actually offensively malicious.

I also kinda dislike that people started saying ‘problematic’ when they could be specific about what someone did wrong. It becomes this vague scary thing that someone ‘said something problematic’ and you don’t know whether they passionately defended nazis or made a clumsy joke about retail workers. And because we don’t know what someone means but we do want to be safe a lot of us just assume to worst and avoid people labelled ‘problematic’. This makes is a very effective tool to bully out people for minor flaws and to reinforce purity culture and disposability culture.
