Stitch Fix: Maternity

I get a lot of questions on my sexual harassment blog from people asking if theyâre overreacting for being upset or afraid or crying after strangers harass them on the street and the thing you need to know about harassment is that itâs SUPPOSED to make you feel this way. The person harassing you wants to knock you down a peg simply for being in a sexualized, racialized, or otherwise marginalized body and existing in a public space. I have been harassed while wearing skinny jeans and t-shirts and I have been made to feel vulnerable and uncomfortable about myself and my body for days afterward and that is NOT OK with me. I have consciously monitored my clothing, what routes I take when by myself, and the times of day I feel safe being alone in public. And Iâve been told I am wrong for feeling this way. In some ways, I am wrong for feeling this way because it is unacceptable that we do this to women and other marginalized people. But I want you all to know that no one is ever wrong for feeling the way the oppressor intends to make us feel by reminding us of our own marginalization.

I was talking with my friendâs mom tonight and after she told me she and her husband are about to celebrate their 30th anniversary, I asked her what the key to having a successful marriage is. This was her answer:
Two pioneers in separate ships reach the same piece of land. They decide that together, they can make it on this land with each other. They donât know what all theyâll come across since itâs new territory, but they swear to each other that theyâll take it one day at a time and face it side-by side, so they burn their ships and they burn the port. Thatâs how you make marriage work. You choose who you want to face it all with, and then you decide that leaving is not an option. You have to both burn your own ships.
When we got engaged, before he slipped the ring on my finger (or maybe I grabbed it out of the box, who really remembers), we looked at each other and said âThis is it. Iâm choosing you. For life. Divorce isnât and wonât ever be on the table. We will make it through the world together.â It may be naive but maybe thatâs how people make it work. When you know you canât get out, you have no other choice than to give it your all.
Better idea: dismantle your ship and built a house and a plow, and you have the beginnings of a pretty sweet life together. You're welcome.
