admittedly the fics in my personal hall of fame aren't super duper underground but i do have a few that i haven't seen talked about as much!! so i tried to order them from least to most popular by hits

so it goes - 50k words, remus gets caught in a time loop after halloween 1981. heavy angst - i've been waiting to recommend this for MONTHS so thank u for giving me the chance! i'm not sure how much i can say without giving the plot away because i do think it's best to go in blind with this one, but oh my god. wow. absolutely mind-blowing, character study elements of remus during the first war as well as how his relationship with sirius, james and lily was affected by it

the line between us - 30k words, remus and sirius break up in the aftermath of the prank, but an accidental blood oath they've made draws them back together after hogwarts. second chances and mutual pining, smut, SO much angst but it all works out in the end - ok so this is one of like three actual niche fics i have on here and for good reason!! this was so poetic oh my god their relationship in this means sooo much to me <33 like soul bonds are u kidding?? another one for the Made me cry list

free and young and we can feel none of it - 55k words, sirius stays over with remus during the summer before seventh year, mutual pining and domestic fluff ensue with barely any angst, mild smut - they share a bed!! cuddling and snuggling at lupin's this was so cute <33 coming of age soft summer romance - this was a sirius black character study as well and that aspect was very well done imo, we really do get into his head and explore his relationships with remus, james, and walburga

the road to sweetwater - 57k word western au! cowboy remus captures outlaw sirius and has to bring him to the sheriff in town. they kiss. angst + hurt/comfort, smut, internalized homophobia and religious guilt - fuel for my brokeback mountain phase. cowboys are frequently secretly fond of each other or whatever

levity - this one's a four-part series with 51k words in total! it's a get-together story following sirius and remus during the first war, so expect buckets of angst as well as the usual pining and tension and realization of feelings - the series does predate the modern marauders fandom by quite a bit, so the characterizations of remus and sirius + the perspective on their relationship is pretty different from what i typically see, and i found that really refreshing! - made me cry by the end 💔💔

in lieu of beaujolais - 18k word oneshot, takes place post-hogwarts but before the war really kicks off. remus and sirius have this friends-with-benefits thing going on which becomes complicated when they move in together after graduation - by the same author as station to station so lovely characterization again!! super poetic as well, and the domestic fluff moved me to tears honestly i need wolfstar to go grocery shopping together for the rest of their lives

from white hot anticipation to cold-blooded fear and back again - 20k words, ravenclaw remus au! this one has remus being cool and mysterious and sirius forgetting how to function around him. super sweet and fluffy - can u tell i like the oblivious sirius trope... - honestly i felt like i was falling in love with remus myself, sirius's feelings are explored so wonderfully

(in my room) i want you here - 6k oneshot, a cute little spin the bottle game at a gryffindor party leads to love confessions - cute and fluffy and perfect honestly. the prose was beautiful, i love this version of remus and sirius and it's a really lovely break from the usual angst and misery lol

seven things that didn't happen on valentine's day at hogwarts, or maybe they did - 25k words, this one follows them through snippets of valentine's days throughout their years at hogwarts. funny and light-hearted with lots of typical marauders shenanigans, but wolfstar pining and fluff and getting together as well! - this one was such a fun break from the doom and gloom i usually read, i love marauders being silly teenage boys and not knowing how to deal with their feelings

station to station - this ones a 26k word hogwarts get-together fic with the typical mutual pining + miscommunication - wolfstar in their purest form honestly i adore this author's characterization of them as well as the way both of their emotions are conveyed! beautifully written + a little bit of first war related angst keeps the tone just slightly bittersweet, at least to me 🥲

saccharine - 26k word modern au, sirius is the ghost haunting remus's new apartment! mystery, domestic fluff, and angst with a happy ending - this was so cute oh my goodness and then it was SO SAD!!! but the ending makes it all worth it <333 trust the process

the things i did - 155k word fix-it fic, remus gets custody of harry and visits sirius in azkaban to try and figure things out. exes to lovers, angst but rest assured there's plenty of fluff later on - this one was a lot of fun for me! i have such a soft spot for wolfstar raising harry fics and this one was especially nice because we see a lot of the impact azkaban has on sirius + how the war affects their relationship

burning and buried with the rest of it - 118k au where remus is bitten the summer before fifth year rather than as a child. heavy angst, slow burn with a happy ending - this is more of a remus-centric fic overall, but i really enjoyed the wolfstar as well! very well-written study of remus's trauma and mental health following the bite, which i thought was interesting since that specific aspect isn't usually explored in fics - platonic moonwater was cute too! - check the tags before reading! this one is quite heavy

befriending a ravenclaw - 55k words, hogwarts era au where remus is in ravenclaw instead of gryffindor and sirius is still, rightfully, obsessed with him. pining, angst, and slow burn (sirius is in denial for a while) ensue. there's smut in the epilogue! - this one was a super fun read! the characters are so full of life i felt like i was there on the page with them <33 - not niche by any means but i couldnt not include one of my absolute favs

language lessons - 150k words, au where everyone lives post-war (YAY!!). remus and sirius get into this friends with benefits situation where remus teaches sirius how to be better at relationships, while sirius imparts his sexual expertise. fluff, angst, mutual pining and slow burn + great smut - THIS FIC!!!! i'm a firm believer that everyone needs to read language lessons at least once in their lives this was perfect to me <33 their relationship is developed so intricately through flashbacks, so the friends to lovers aspect is really well done imo! super fun read, i couldn't stop giggling at my screen they're the cutest ever

bindings, bindings - 65k au where james, lily, and regulus come back to life through the veil a few months after halloween 1981. fluff and angst + hurt/comfort - i actually reread this at least once a month it has some of my favourite wolfstar scenes from any fic <33 everybody lives fix-it fics u have my whole heart

remain in light - 175k words, second war au where sirius survives the ministry battle! established wolfstar, however it's told through a non-linear narrative with a lot of flashbacks, so we get to see their relationship from hogwarts onward. angst with the perfect amount of fluff + smut to round it all out - this is THE wolfstar fic of all time for me!!!! their relationship was so sweet and soft and realistic imo, sirius and remus are fleshed out so well as characters that their relationship becomes so much more impactful. i could write essays about this fic it truly made me fall in love with wolfstar all over again. seriously if u read one fic from this list let it be this one - again quite popular so not exactly what ur looking for 😅 sorry about that! i just cant not include the fics i wake up thinking about in a cold sweat lol

as the worm moon dies - 200k word au where voldemort came to power in 1965. remus is in this underground werewolf fighting ring, sirius is a bored aristocrat and everything gets really crazy really fast. sexual tension, spies and prophecies, and so so so much angst - this was an absolute rollercoaster from start to finish! at no point could i predict what would happen next and at no point was i disappointed. incredible read, if u like super high-stakes plot this is for u - this one is pretty popular but i wanted to include it anyway since it's one of the more unique wolfstar fics i've found - mind the tags!!! and major character death

that's the art of getting by - 40k words, post first-war remus gets custody of harry and sirius is freed from azkaban, they navigate both their relationship and their grief. angst with a happy ending - okay i KNOW this has nearly a million hits but if anyone hasn't read it already u absolutely have to. this fic is Everything to me, such a good portrayal of grief and mental health + how it affects relationships, and wolfstar raising harry>>>> one of my fav tropes - "was it the wolf thing?" "was it the black thing?" SOBBING sorry this took so long i was SCOURING my bookmarks trying to pick which fics to include and then i just ended up adding all of them!! i hope u find something u like <3

"Alright, Pads?" James smiled as they all stepped out of the fireplace in the Leaky Cauldron.

"Try not to worry, darling, you're with us," Effie passed a hand in his hair.

"And we won't leave you for one second," Fleamont nodded, his smile identical to James's.

"And if we run into them I'll punch them all!" Peter said, raising his fists.

Sirius snorted, but he still gripped Remus's hand as they stepped in the walled courtyard behind the pub. It was August, and it was time to buy school supplies for their sixth year. But this time he wouldn't receive them all directly in his bedroom, carried by a very grumpy House Elf, nor would he follow his parents and brother to buy new robes and have to listen to his mother scoff as the seamstress added the required Gryffindor colours to his. No, it was the first year Sirius would start at Hogwarts after being taken in by the Potters, his first time going to Diagon Alley with his new family. He should have been happy, but he was terrified. What if he ran into his parents and they tried to take him back? What if he had to look at Regulus after leaving him behind in that house?

"Breathe, my love," Remus whispered in his ear as the wall opened revealing the bustling street. "It'll be fine."

And it was. After a while Sirius started to relax, allowing himself to finally enjoy the day out. He insisted Effie didn't buy him brand-new robes, that his were fine for another year only to be met by a roll of eyes and a kiss on the forehead because he was a growing boy like his brother and needed new clothes. Sirius's heart soared as always when Effie defined James as his brother out loud, and as always he ignored the pinch at the thought of Regulus. He looked at Remus as he reverently checked an antique book, smiled when James passed his arm in his father's and waxed poetic about the latest broomstick in front of the shop so much that five minutes later Fleamont had caved and bought it for him, laughed when Peter tried to free a cage of rats from the pet shop and got hit in the head by the owner's shoe, felt his heart flutter when they stopped for ice cream and Fleamont ordered Effie's favourite flavours (salted caramel, autumn sunset and countryside holiday with chocolate sprinkles on top) without even having to ask her. He was grinning openly as they strolled through the street, Remus's hand still in his.

"Sirius?"

He froze, his heart skipping a beat. It wasn't his father's voice behind him, but the head of the Black family had enough goons to send after his rebellious son if he wanted. He slowly turned, staring at the man who had called him. He was tall, with familiar sharp features and pale eyes Sirius couldn't place, but his expression was hesitant.

"Who are you?" Sirius said, his voice as sharp as he could.

The man swallowed, nodding.

"Of course you don't recognise me, it's been so long..."

Sirius felt a hand on his shoulder in that instant.

"Who are you sir, and what do you want with my son?" Effie asked, as the others fanned around Sirius.

"Your son? I'm sorry, I-" the man blinked, looking again at Sirius. "Aren't you Sirius Orion Black, Walburga's son?"

"Not by choice," Sirius replied, trying to remember if and when he had seen that man. "And certainly not anymore."

The man smiled.

"I've always known you would grow up to stand up to her one day. I'm her brother, Alphard."

"Uncle Alphard?" Sirius stared, memories of when he was little more than a baby rushing back. "But... You're dead."

"Dead and blasted off that awful tapestry and possibly in hell for my sister," Alphard chuckled. "Well, if for the likes of her Ireland is hell anyway."

"But... How..." Sirius couldn't form a coherent sentence.

"I had to fake my own death, or othewise it would have become a reality," Alphard sighed. "But I always hoped you would make it out too one day. My only regret is I couldn't be there for you while you were growing up."

"But why did they want you dead?" Sirius had finally found words again.

In that moment a man built like a tree trunk, a bushy red beard adorning his face, walked up to them, passing an arm around Alphard's shoulders.

"Everything alright, a ghrá?" he asked.

There was a moment of silence, finally broken by Fleamont stepping forward and extending his hand with a smile.

"Fleamont Potter, we were at Hogwarts together but never got introduced. What do you say we all go have a pint at the Leaky Cauldron and have a chat?"

"Yes," Alphard nodded, shaking Fleamont's hand. "Yes, I'd like that."

"Yes," Sirius said, moving his hand in Remus's as he kept looking at the other man's arm still around his uncle's shoulders. "I think we have a lot of things to talk about."

Regulus barely had to wait a half hour out on the curb before James’s car came skidding to a stop in front of him. But in those thirty minutes, he had plenty of time to think. To ruminate. To stifle tears and sniffle into his hand and hate himself. To regret yelling at the older boy to leave him alone. To wonder why James was even coming to help him at all.

If he was honest, he was shocked when the old, slightly beat-up four-door showed up. He’d been terrified that when James had said, “I’ll be right there,” and hung up with a click, that he’d been fucking with him. That nobody was coming.

He’d’ve deserved it. Leaving James the way he did. Going back to his parents and acting like the right arse he never wanted to be.

But still, here James was.

“You…you came,” Regulus muttered as soon as the older boy got out of the car and walked towards him, because he didn’t know what else to say.

The older boy threw him a surprised look and paused, the fury that’d been on his face instantly melting away. “Of course I did,” he said, like it was the easiest answer in the world.

Regulus didn’t let on, but his heart melted, the huge knot in his chest that had taken up permanent residence since he’d moved back in with his parents loosening a little. “You didn’t have to,” he mumbled.

James just shook his head. “Reg, I told you. I’d do anything for you.”

Regulus didn’t know what to do with that, so he just stood, moving to get into the passenger seat.

“Wait. Do you have everything you need?” James asked, reaching out to him. Did he want to hug him? Really? After the way they’d left things?

“No,” Regulus scoffed. “But if I go back in there, they’ll probably kill me.”

The scowl on James’s face could’ve frozen lava. “Tell me what you need.”

Startled, Regulus rattled off a short list of irreplaceable items, ending by saying, “...but you can’t seriously be considering–”

“Stay here.”

Regulus had never known James Potter to march. He’d never known him to attack conflict head-on. Hell, he’d never known him to yell, not even when Regulus was in the foulest of his moods. But in that moment, James stomped into Number 12, Grimmauld Place, expression steel.

And ten minutes later, he walked out with a bag.

“They won’t be bothering you again,” he said to Regulus shortly, kissing him soundly on the lips, and wrenching open the passenger door for him.

Regulus was breathless. “James, I–”

“Don’t leave me again. Okay?”

The look in James’s eyes as he leaned down to stare wildly at Regulus was almost desperate. Emotions, raw and turbulent, churned behind his gaze.

Regulus’s stomach flipped pleasantly.

“No,” he whispered. “No, never.”

“Good.”

Sirius’s voice cut through the chattering crowd, drawing the attention of everyone in the huge room. James, who was staring, completely enamored, at his new husband, had to rip his gaze away to look over at his friend.

“I promise I have written a speech,” Sirius said, beaming at the crowd. “I even wrote it before the day of–take that, McKinnon!” A few people laughed. “But before I get to that, I have something special arranged.”

James looked to his left, exchanging a nervous glance with Regulus. “Do you have any idea—?” he muttered.

“Not a clue,” Regulus replied, looking terrified. “But if he does something stupid, remember that he’s your best man, not mine.”

James gulped, turning back to where Sirius stood, a terrifying smile on his face.

“James met Reggie when he was seventeen and was immediately obsessed. I’m sure you all remember,” he chuckled, allowing the crowd to grumble good-naturedly while James grinned and blushed. “But if you don’t, or you were lucky enough to not be there, I have quite a treat for you! I have proof! If you’ll all direct your attention to the screen to my left…Moony, you can roll the tape!”

Immediately, James’s stomach sank, because he knew what was coming. “Reg, wanna go have a quickie in the bathroom?” he whispered to his new husband, face getting warmer and warmer.

Regulus’s eyes, though, were glued to the screen, and he just waved his hand dismissively at James. “Later,” he muttered.

“Play this at my wedding! No–no I swear! Play this at my wedding!” On-screen James began shouting, his voice pounding through the speakers of the room. The screen showed James, Remus, and Peter all laying on James’s bed, Sirius clearly behind the camera.

“Why’s that, Prongs?” Sirius-from-behind-the-camera asked, his voice full of mirth.

“Because!” On-screen James grinned idiotically. “It’s–I’m seventeen, and it’s September first and I swear to all of you, I’m marrying Regulus Black someday. I swear!”

Present day James groaned, burying his head in his hands as the crowd awwed.

“I’m marrying Regulus Arcturus Black! You’ll play this at our wedding and I’ll be like, ha! Told you!”

“And that, folks, was James Potter, mere hours after he met Regulus Black,” Sirius said into the microphone, grinning.”And it all went downhill from here, as you can see.”

The crowd, and Regulus, burst into applause.
