Whenever ppl talk about how Academia™️ is such a classist, exclusive, rich ivory tower I think about my professor who slept in his office and kept his shelf stocked with ramen rather than books because he lived over an hour away from campus and sometimes, esp in bad weather, his junk car couldn’t make it that far on days he taught

Not that there aren’t wealthy, obnoxious, elitist academics (although people tend to only target professors rather than administrators, which I don’t get, but I digress), but the idea that it’s a single eViL monolithic institution is... more than laughable

with the way they force everyone in adjunct positions these days a sizable chunk of academics are literally at like. the poverty line  our society punishes people for trying to follow their passion or contribute something to humanity

Hey also this huge anti-academia pushback is a right wing movement so they can dismiss scientific claims and historical and sociological studies. It feeds their needs and their conspiracy theories. They want you to hate them as well. Yes academia is classicist, as most well paying jobs are, but if you think academics are the enemy, this evil institution, you're falling pray for right wing propaganda.

my lecturers live in the same dodgy area as we students do, some of them trying to raise kids there, in the same shitty, crime filled backstreets just 10 minutes away from the part time homes of the higher ups.... doesn’t really seem right for a world top 50 institution
