Lost and Found
I've been really nostalgic for Steven Universe lately, and I have so much love and appreciation for the show I grew up with, so I thought I should make something nice to sort of give back, y'know? Anyways, I hope you enjoy. <3

if you know, you know
Do you know what this is? This is The Heart from Auschwitz.
An act of defiance. A statement of hope. A crime punishable by death.
On December 12, 1944, locked inside Auschwitz, Polish teenager Fania turned twenty. After spending a year in a concentration camp, Fania didn’t expect her birthday to even be remembered - but her best friend, Zlatka, risked everything to make her a birthday present, a paper heart.
Simply making the heart - or carrying it - could get either of them killed.
The heart was signed by many of their friends, bearing notes in Polish, German, French, and Hebrew that announced "When you get old, put your glasses on your nose, take this album in your hand and read my signature again,“ and “Freedom! Freedom! Freedom!” It was an act of great sacrifice and love for a friend.
Less than 40 days later, they began the Death March from Auschwitz to Ravensbruck, and from Ravensbruck to freedom. Fania carried the heart under her arm the whole time. And survived.
Fania donated the heart to the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Center in 1988, where it is a featured piece of their exhibit. You can read more about the story of Fania and Zlatka Meg Wiviott’s Paper Hearts, coming September 2015.
God. Even in great darkness there is such love.
the 75th aniversary of the liberation of auschwitz is in a couple of days (jan 27 2020) so I feel this is a good thing to have on your dash. Remember that every single victim and survivor of the holocaust was a person with so much love in their heart and so many storiees and interpersonal relationships like this.
what does fire blind with?
I just found out about the fact that Rachel’s Missing Person Poster was Copied from a real woman’s missing person poster. Her name was Sunday Blombergh and I find it disgusting that DONTNOD thought this was an okay thing to do to exploit this poor woman’s death. They copied it from the layout, to the sheriff’s phone number, to the date she went missing, to her eye colour, to her weight, to her fucking tattoos. I don’t know how DONTNOD even thought this was an okay thing to do. It makes me absolutely sick to my stomach that they thought this was an okay.
And the fact that never talked about it, they just used Sunday’s pictures for a stupid videogame. This was a woman’s tragic end, not some videogame plot.
I’m truly disappointed and upset to have found this out.
!!! i still can’t believe dontnod went away with this.
the daughter of the victim made two tiktoks (@/oddkidizzy) recently about the situation. the first being her comparing the posters and the second one going in depth with the whole thing.
the way she reacted proves that neither her, or her family were aware of dontnod using her mom’s story and death for a fictional character in a video game. AND they seem to ignore her when she just wants answers as to why they did it.
apparently, someone in a reddit thread about the situation said that they might’ve just wanted to use the poster as a visual reference, as sunday blombergh’s missing poster was on one of these free-to-use images websites (first of all, what the fuck?), but if it was really the case, was it REALLY necessary for them to use the same phone number, same missing date, same tattoos? it’s so disrespectful and the fact that the studio never made a statement about it or credited sunday’s name anywhere in the making of this game is revolting.
more infos about her case here and here.
Okay- yes, dontnod absolutely should have acknoweledged where they got the poster from, or just have not used it in the first place, but I don’t really see how it’s disrespectful to her? It’s just a poster, and the physical details that Dontnod lifted off Sunday are superficial. There are a couple similarities between their stories, but I doubt that dontnod intended to or was consciously writing Rachel’s story around Sunday’s case (in fact, in the two articles you linked most of the similarities between the cases are in one written in 2019. LIS came out in 2015). And if the argument is that it’s disrespectful because it’s a videogame, I think that’s doing a disservice to the medium. I would not call Rachel ‘practically her mother’.
it’s disrespectful to her as in they didn’t ask her family if that was even remotedly okay to take inspiration to her and her case to make a story about a fictional character in a video game. it’s disrespectful to her daughter, who played a major role in her mom’s case, and is being IGNORED by the creators of the game when she just wants answers.
those details being taken off sunday’s story shouldn’t have been there. there’s no reason for the date, phone number and tattoos to coincide. literally none. it doesn’t change anything to the storyline if she went missing on april 23, instead of 22. or if she didn’t have the star tattoo on her wrist.
if you don’t understand that it’s disrespectful to use someone’s missing case and death as a plot element to a video game (or regardless of the medium, that is) without the acknowledgment of her family OR crediting anything related to her during the development and final result of the game, then i can’t do anything for you.
furthermore, if all those shared details of her case vs rachel’s cases were purely coincidental, it would be even worse because it means they didn’t even care to look into her story at all and just used the poster and went on with it as if a real person didn’t LITERALLY go missing and ended up being murdered.
Yes, I’ll acknowledge that it was a bad idea to lift the details off the poster. As for the stories though, the only similarities I could find between either of them is that it was two guys doing it, and Rachel and Sunday (or, at least allegedly in Sunday’s case) did drugs. They didn’t die in the same way, the people who did kill them aren’t all that similar either, and past the physical details and date of death, they’re different people.
oh my fucking god, is that boot good? did you lick it good? dontnod’s in the wrong, stop being up their asses. we’re not cancelling them, we just want them to speak up about it, which they didn’t do, even FIVE years later. and if you look at my original reblog, i didn’t talk about the similarities in their cases at ALL. if her daughter thinks the stories and details are similar, i think she’s well placed to know about it. end of the discussion.
This is actually fucking disgusting, what the hell DontNod? I just finished this game for the first time a week ago and this just makes me extremely upset... They didn’t even think about MAYBE altering the details and layout on the poster instead of almost blatantly copying it and Sunday’s physical appearance down to the TATTOOS? That is honestly just... rediculous & incredibly lazy... the whole fandom should get a jump on this and maybe there’s a chance DontNod will pay more attention? Also, there’s a difference between referencing and copying. It doesn’t matter much though anyways, because imo this shouldn’t even have been an available “reference” image anyway.

“reblogs aren’t important you’re just whiny”
yeah because when you see this
tell me you don’t get annoyed.
tumblr’s algorithm only cares about posts that are reblogged, it doesn’t count likes. posts don’t get promoted or circulated when they only have likes (the way instagram functions), only reblogs matter for increasing reach on tumblr as a platform.
support content creators.
like y'all are fuckin killing tumblr (& content creation) but okay
you think that’s not a lot of notes? that’s cute.
but yeah, tumblr’s system definitely doesn’t advantage non-popular artists, but there’s a big problem from within the community too. i have over 400 followers and i consider myself lucky when more than 2 people reblog my art, so imagine how much worse it is for people with even less followers.
reblog content creators, guys. liking posts doesn’t do anything.
