Children are born into a state of implicit debt.
Good parents forgive this debt. Bad parents expect it to be repaid, one way or another. The accepted currencies are varied and cryptic and might be mostly innocuous or they might be horrifically criminal.
Many families don’t realize that there is a debt until the child defaults on it somehow. That could be for any reason—the child simply fails to deliver on the parental investment by not adequately being the child they paid for.
“Inspiration porn” is a disability term, but I’m using it here because it’s appropriately provocative, and because the state of being a child is functionally a disability. A child who fails to be life-affirming and inspirational and to perform heartwarming innocence is breaking a contract, and adults are no longer obligated to uphold their own end and nurture the child. A child is a resource from which inspiration porn can be mined, or it is a kind of brood parasite.
my job is to stay alive until someone discovers effective treatments for my Stuff. which they're gonna. maybe in five to ten years, idk, but they're gonna. progress on studying ME/CFS long covid EDS etc has utterly exploded in the last five years. they're gonna develop treatments that work. they're gonna develop things that will let me have a life that isn't being flat and hurting. they're going to
this book is out now!!! it's a short read, less than 200 pages, and it's SO good. i literally had to pause halfway through just to send the author a message about how much i liked it. definitely leans more utopian than scientific, but that makes sense given the format, and i think it has a lot of good things to say.
once you really start thinking about how restrictive the world is for children and how many bullshit justifications we retroactively come up for it all the time, you can't stop seeing it everywhere. this book makes a good case for including children in our political efforts not as rhetorical devices but as an actual class of oppressed people.
So! This is a perfect case study in situations where you should be wary of misinformation.
Take a moment and ask yourself, a project like this requires a lot of time, money and dedication of resources, why would scientists dedicate that time to something that could just be done by a tree?
The answer is they wouldn't. So that means this claim requires further investigation!
This project is called LIQUID 3, and it's not meant for cities with wide open spaces, it's meant for cities like Belgrade in Serbia. These cities are densely populated and heavily polluted, to the point where pollution actually chokes out current trees and makes creating green spaces difficult.
Liquid 3 was a PhD scientists answer to these problems. The microalgae tank is intended for spaces where you either:
Don't have enough space to plant full trees, or
Don't have enough time to plant trees and wait for them to grow up.
The tank is extremely efficient when you consider the amount of space needed compared to the amount of CO2 turned into oxygen. The tank can operate throughout the winter. And most importantly, it can be quickly set up in areas that desperately need relief from air pollution NOW not in 10 years when trees are done growing. Children currently suffocating on polluted air can't wait for trees to grow, they need to be taken care of now, and Liquid 3 is one of the ways to take care of them. Depending on the species of microalgea used, a number have shown a pretty amazing capacity to pull heavy metals out of the air which is something trees can get choked up by.
The tanks aren't just tanks either! Liquid 3 have solar panels placed on top, they have lighting and mobile phone charging, and they work as public benches. The designers of it want to encourage green spaces where there's room, but where there isn't room or time, Liquid 3 can step in. Realistically, this isn't a replacement for trees. It's replacing boring metal city benches with new, cooler benches that also clean the air (and have at least some heating during the winter).
Not only that, but the microalgea that grows is native to Serbia and all that microalgea has a ton of great uses! It makes for great fertilizer, compost, wastewater treatment, cleaner biofuels and even for helping create new tanks for further air purification. They only require a quick algae divide once a month, and the produced algae can be carted off to where ever it's needed. This makes them effective solutions for areas that can't sustain complex installations.
So yeah, there's actually quite a lot of places that would like these. Lots of people currently breathing in terrible quality air would much rather have their boring city benches replaced with really fucking cool algae tanks that clean the air and can be used to help create + sustain future green spaces in cities. I dunno about you, but I'd take that over a dumb metal bench any day. Put these at every bus stop and I'd be delighted.
can ppl pls reblog this version
Well damn. I was also like wtf is this stupid slime tank and then I read the rest and my mind got blown
Text of tweet under the cut because it is loooong.
But... Stochastic Parrots.
This is an excellent read.
I just went looking for the post on X and got a message that it didn't exist
I searched for Guri Singh and got search results showing his account existed, but when I clicked on it I got a message his account did not exist Does anyone know if he made his account private or if he got nuked by Elon? Or do I just suck at X (because I never go there)?
Yup, the tweet is unavailable because the account has been suspended.
It doesn't look like Wayback Machine has a copy, either.
So I've found a few other references:

people with ARFID and people with very few autism safe foods and people with contamination OCD and people in ED recovery and everyone else with a complicated relationship with food that no one takes seriously GET BEHIND ME!!!!!!!
Every single non trans woman who proclaims to be an ally absolutely needs to be posting about how goddamn transmisogynist staff is.
Because when trans women dare to speak up for themselves, Tumblr nukes their blogs.
We need to be fucking loud about this, daily, because Tumblr staff is specifically targeting and deleting trans women who are not breaking ToS and who often have fundraisers up FOR THEIR SURVIVAL.
By deleting these blogs repeatedly, Tumblr staff is saying loud and clear what they hope happens to these girls.
Are y'all okay with that? Because if not we need to be posting about it more because we have seen by now it's incredibly fucking unlikely this sites moderation will delete our blogs for it because we are not trans women
Tumblr staff and CEO Matt Mullenweg want trans women in need to not be able to post their fundraisers, meaning they are okay with these women dying.

holy shit
i knew teslas were bad but "literally twice as deadly as the average vehicle" is something else
a large majority of TMEs haven't unlearned the patriarchal idea that womanhood is a bad thing, and they do not believe trans women actually seek and embrace womanhood. a lot of them seem to think we only want (and experience) the surface level aesthetics of womanhood
I don't know a single trans woman who didn't know she would face a stark increase in misogyny when she started transition. I don't know a single trans woman who's ever seemed to think "I didn't know I would face misogyny too!" I've never met a trans woman who thought she should be exempt from misogyny because of her transness
and yet far far too many TMEs seem to think we are naive to the challenges of womanhood, that we are taken aback by them and regret opening ourselves up to them. the trans women I know embrace womanhood fully, difficulties and all. transfeminism is a movement of women planting our flags within womanhood and fighting misogyny. we are not keeping one foot in some exit door in case the going gets too tough. we are taking an active role in combatting the forces that oppress us as women
(and, by the way, there is no exit door the way a lot of people seem to think there is. there is no coming back from being a tranny in the eyes of the patriarchy. our womanhood is no more a removable costume than anyone else's)

idk if u included this in ur post b4 n i forgot but ive been wondering if u have any advice for avoiding esophageal /throat scarring from throwing up, i already have a lot of damage from when i was younger
okay i've been thinking about this this morning and i said in a previous post that try to frow up infrequently party out of concern for throat health
HOWEVER some things i'm going to add to my routine are:
taking antacids (like tums for example) a few minutes before. this will raise and buffer your tummy pH and probably buffer your throat pH too. this will reduce the damage that can be done to your throat and should protect teeth too.
thing i've recommend before is to rinse your mouth with a baking soda solution. this will neutralize lingering acids so they don't hurt your teeth.
drink something soothing and nice to your throat. "throat coat" herbal tea is really nice and you can add honey too that'd be nice, huh?
i always encourage people to eat something after just cuz you lost all the food that was in there and you need to eat. i eat a lot of greek yogurt because it's nice to my tummy but i tell people to eat their favorite foods or treats because that's fun.
and look i'm not a vomit doctor i can't say that this will prevent all harm if you're frowing up regularly but it'll reduce harm. do what's manageable and nice for you
a couple more tips i learned from ed spaces (moreso general harm reduction than throat scarring, but still helpful)
1. drink electrolytes afterwards! throwing up messes up your electrolyte balance, particularly if you do it often
2. don’t brush your teeth until 30 mins - 1 hour after. this avoids tooth enamel damage from leftover acid on your teeth. but DO rinse (as previously mentioned).
3. this one is probably obvious, but the closer to eating that you throw up, the less time it has to digest and therefore turn into the stomach acid that burns up your throat. Do be careful abt what you eat beforehand as well, anything spicy / super sweet is going to likely hurt worse coming up.
of course the best way is to throw up as infrequently as possible, but this will prevent some harm when you do.
There's worse to come, folks. Strap in and stay strapped.
A new poem- “CHILLS”
The thing that abled people who advocate for the disabled community don’t get is that there are times when disabilities/accommodations clash. Horribly.
Like I spent years having to come up with a solution to get therapy dogs into a series of residence halls. Why years? Because we had to decide who got to stay and who got to leave: the people who needed therapy dogs or the people with severe allergies to animals. Who got the alternative housing?
Things like fidget toys might seem great for some disabled people but having them in the room could be distracting/overstimulating for others. The same goes with stimming. It can’t be helped but neither can the anxiety that another person in the room feels as they watch/hear it. Additionally, something like a weighted blanket might immediately calm one kid down and send the other one into a panic attack due to the claustrophobia it causes. (*Points to myself*)
Every Metro bus in New York City has a series of seats at the front that can be lifted up to accommodate people in wheelchairs but if I’m in one of those spots then someone with a cane/walker has to journey even further to sit down.
The flashing lights of a fire alarm are there to help deaf/hearing impaired but if they’re not properly timed, they can also cause a person to have a seizure.
The worst part about all of these is that there is rarely a concrete solution that makes everyone happy/safe. And I’m not here to offer any because I don’t know them. I’m just here to remind you all that as you’re taking your education/health classes, as you’re reading your textbooks, as you’re preparing to go be an advocate, just remember that there is rarely ever such a thing as a one-size-fits-all solution to advocacy and that something you do that can help one disabled person might actually hinder another.
Food for thought.
I have heard this referred to by some in the disability advocacy profession as “duelling disabilities” and it’s definitely something I wish people would be more mindful of when discussing accessibility.
another useful term is “competing access needs” or incompatible access needs.
i just came across the term “access friction” that was coined as an extension of the “competing access needs” to remove the idea of competition, winning and losing
Calling Up Justice is creating a resource on access frictions because there are multiple meanings and applications of the term. Access frict
This is also one of several good reasons the phrase ‘fully accessible’ means nothing without further context. Your venue is fully accessible? To whom?
Reblogging this version for the excellent turn of phrase, and the link that goes with it.
Also, while I was reading this, a slogan popped into my head:
The best accessibility is flexibility.
Why is it that every time I google something like "Are olives poisonous to cats" the top results are always like "Fun fact: Cats are carnivores! This means that they eat meat. There is no reason to include olives in a cat's diet. You should feed your cat cat food, which is dry or wet food especially designed for cats. You can purchase this at a store." like is there a single person alive on the planet who's googled "Are blueberry muffins safe for cats" because they're planning on switching their cat to a muffin-only diet??? No, I'm asking because the little bastard somehow popped open the packet while I was putting away the groceries and dragged one under the couch before I could react and now I need to know if I should call the after-hours vet. "Cats should not eat spaghetti." NO SHIT, SHERLOCK!!!! "Try to keep human food away from cats." i live in a studio apartment with a completely silent and permanently hungry apex predator who has the intelligence of a toddler and the desperate Machiavellian cunning of a creature who spent his formative months on the streets. He can already open doors and he is this 👌 close to learning how to open the microwave. He is stronger than me and covered in knives. So im gonna do my best but for the moment i just need you to tell me whether this yoghurt is going to kill my son y/n
I've been using the pet poison hotline's poison list cause it has a search function. It also tells you whether something is mildly, moderately, or severely toxic which can be very handy! For anyone wondering, the PhD student's name is Myra Cheng.
Here's a link to an article about the study from the Stanford Report: link.
Across three preregistered studies, participants interacting with sycophantic AI became more convinced of their own rightness and less willing to repair relationships. Yet at the same time, participants rated sycophantic AI models as higher quality, more trustworthy, and more desirable for future use, which may explain why this behavior has persisted despite its harmful impacts.
