Vimm's Lair: Preserving the Classics

I'm just gonna slide this on in here for anyone that is interested in preserving old games. They take it very seriously too, they want an archive of every single game. Like, they have lists of every game ever released for a system, and once that system gets old enough, they add it to their archive and start collecting. Their latest addition was the Xbox 360, they opened that vault up in September 2022, and proudly announced they'd finished their collection of games for it back in April.

Also, while their game archives are almost entirely complete, they've got another project of archiving the manuals that came with those games, and that is... considerably less well filled out. Their collection of Xbox 360 manuals is especially rough, they've only gotten manuals for three games. So if you've got some Xbox 360 games kicking around, and the manual's still with them, please consider scanning them and submitting them to the site!

Game preservation is important, but people rarely consider preserving the manuals as well; I really respect Vimm's Lair for being so thorough in their archival work.

White Lily is Lady Lilith confirmed

Lady Lilith is a religious figure that's hardly ever spoken about, so I'm not sure if this is on purpose, but I've been thinking about her VERY on the nose parallels with White Lily a lot before this update.

In Jewish/Mesopotamian mythology, Lilith is the first woman ever created, before Eve, alongside Adam, who refused to be subservient/marry him and was banished from the garden of Eden. She then became a demon, often depicted with snakes and tormenting men with her beauty. She is blamed for nightmares and lustful dreams, as well as missing children.

Firstly, we know from Pure Vanilla's embarrassing monologue that he feels as though she turned away from him in order to pursue the truth. Debatably, he was in love with her, and she wasn't. Even more specifically, she left him in order to do something unholy and in defiance of their gods. It was so terrible that she became a demon, Dark Enchantress. Snake symbolism is common in crk, with characters like Shadow Milk specifically, to show that they've done something sinful. Admittedly, White Lily herself has never really been depicted with a forbidden fruit or a snake.

It's believed that Adam never truly lost his love for Lilith because of how beautiful she was. Pure Vanilla never shuts up about her, and Elder Faerie also falls in love with her very quickly. I don't want to say she's tormenting them, but it's clear that White Lily leaves a lasting romantic impression on most of the men she meets. She's just easy to fall in love with.

Dark Enchantress has snatched children away before, and white lily is the source of a reoccurring nightmare for Pure Vanilla.

some of the quotes from her Moonflower Faerie costume are particularly on the nose. Her voice is a lot more playful and calm, and she has several lines that imply she is not only uninterested in Pure Vanilla's affection, but also holds the power to give people dreams.

This may be a stretch, but Lilith is sometimes referred to as a nocturnal queen or witch. In modern paganism, she's been adopted as a symbol of romantic and religious freedom for women, as one of the only female figures to have stood up to God and lived. White Lily's ties to the Faerie Kingdom and witchcraft may be a link to Lilith as well, as historically, witchcraft is seen as blasphemous.

Additionally, the name Lilith/Lily, has mesopotamian and babylonian origins that mean "night demon" or "night monster." Lilies themselves are a flower that represents death.

I could be super wrong about all of this but it's a cool link anyway. There are just too many parallels for it to be a coincidence I think

The Vampires Nest | Sleepover episode

i feel like the way several characters' backstories are just kinda glossed over and/or pushed aside? This is especially prominent in vsmp! Scott.

For most of the characters, they have SOME kind of backstory, whether it's in depth and important to the plot like owen's, there but still missing some details like avid or Shelby's, and then there are ones like Scott and legs. Something CLEARLY happened in their past, but it's barely acknowledged. I have talked about this in a bit more detail on this post.

Now, legs has, despite being in the same category, a wildly different approach to his backstory. Nothing is fully confirmed, but we know a few things from implications: legs was a military doctor, has killed many people(possibly more than Owen/2800+), and the things he has done have heavily effected his mental/emotional states and moral compass.

On the opposite end, Scott has. Literally nothing confirmed. We know he is at least a thousand years old(including his 600 year nap); I usually place him around 1400. We know he didn't actually kill people often, mostly using them for physical labor and servants.

Eventually, the villagers got sick of him and asked a team of witches to weaken and kill him. However, due to his immense power and age, they were only able to put him to sleep.

After that?

Nothing.

However, we do have a few hints that, whether intentional or not, my autistic ass picked up on lol.

First, Scott has a clear dislike of humans. It's not as obvious as Owen's, and it's definitely mixed with a sense of amusement and belittling, but it's there. At one point(not sure when but maybe one of his later episodes?), Scott says this:"things that once felt unimaginable or heartbreaking, soul destroying, eventually just become things of the past."

So cc!scott has kind of underhandedly confirmed that v!Scott is very...detached? From human emotions, even if he hasn't always been.

That part about things feeling "unimaginable or heartbreaking, soul destroying" makes me feel like maybe something similar to Owen's backstory happened to him. The only difference between them is that it had only been a few days since Owen had been turned when it happened, and then he'd immediately fallen into a 200 year coma.

For Scott, it likely would have happened much earlier, possibly hundreds of years before his coma.

Another thing, he had a conversation with legs at one point. In it, he says that he is mostly using his experiences with humans that "eventually the worst of them always comes to the top and before they realize that they've done worse atrocities than the monsters they're claiming to hate"

My theory is that he used to have a large coven/family, and something happened to wipe them out, causing Scott to commit the massacre that caused the villagers to try to kill him.

Sorry for rambling but I love talking about cc!Scott's characters especially when they have especially interesting/non-existent backstories lol

Scott Goldsmith was a horrible person, okay, yes. But I do think some people tend to be a bit harsher than necessary when his redemption arc started on the last episode. 

That episode was not about making a hero out of him, it wasn’t meant to display him as perfectly good. It was a starting point. A starting point that he continued after the fact, that’s why it matters. Scott is never going to be perfect, none of us are, but those first steps are the most important part. 

Helping create the plan to get them out without genocide

Promising Legs he would be better, and getting Abolish to keep him in line

Visiting Owen’s grave without bravado

And continuing to try to be better

Avid’s death was the starting point, yes, but it’s not the only thing. He’s not a good person just because the guy he liked died, that action made him truly understand what being a monster was. Killing someone who had been firm in loyalty after turning, killing someone everyone else trusted, and going behind the coven leaders back. 

Pyro and Owen had their reasons, Pyro is a victim of manipulation, Owen was just another manipulator. 

But Scott still visited Owen’s grave, with no one else around, and wished him well. Letting go of a grudge he could have held. 

He’s not perfect, he’s not a good person, and the last episode isn’t trying to portray him as such. They show a START of becoming better, there’s a firm difference between randomly redeeming a character and showing a very real start to how he can become better. 

Building Avid a grave wasn’t the only human emotion Scott portrayed. He, Drift, and Sheby grew closer because of their shared shock in Avid’s death, yes. However, Scott’s actions are his own. 

He helped make the plan for things to end peacefully and I don’t see enough people realizing that. 

I don’t think Pyro deserved what he got, I think it was necessary for the ending, but Pyro was a victim and Scott was a manipulator towards him. 

You also have to remember how Scott saw himself in Pyro, if Pyro was the way he was, did Scott really want to be that person? That’s why he changed, not just changed, but started trying to do better. 

That’s an important distinction.
