It took a quarter century to get the precursor to the FDA in place in 1906, and even then the organization was effectively hamstrung by lack of ability to enforce regulations for another two decades or so. A lot of people fought very hard, and in relay-race style because it took so long, to put in place the protections we have today and may not have tomorrow.

Please don't fall for profit-driven lies about regulations stopping innovation or whatever - regulations are the only thing keeping profitable "innovations" from killing us.

There's several good books about this, including The Poison Squad and if course The Jungle.

Also if you want to see this in action, watch Leverage and really internalize that most of the episodes are ripped from the headlines . . . except they had to take them down for "believability."
