Apart of few notable exceptions dogs were historically bred to either, A herd, B retrieve, C be a little guy whom sits on my lap, or D KILL STUFF! Either humans or other dogs or game, so so so many dog breeds are here because we wanted them to attack or kill things for us. GSD, JRT, bullies, Akita, mastiffs, Pyrs, Weener dogs for hell’s sake!

It’s not unique to pitties, or Dobermans, or whatever the ‘it’ breed to hate is a the moment. Dogs will be dogs. Dogs will chase and they will bite.

The issue with bully breeds is that they are a large, strong terrier, and they are EVERYWHERE. How many Dobermans or Akitas or Cane Corso’s do you see walking the streets? Almost none. They could do the exact same damage as a pit if not more. But the shelters aren’t overflowing with them and jackasses aren’t breeding them at the same rate at bullies. Every third dog in my area is a pit mix. Obviously the majority of the reportable attacks to bites are going to be from pits when the options are either that or a doodle, hound, or 4% other purebreed.

The conversation around pits and bully mixes shouldn’t be about how sweet and non dangerous they are. They are a very large powerful terrier! You need to respect that they have strong prey drive and since most come from shelters have an unknown background and unstable temperament. I love bullies! But I would absolutely 100% trust an off leash coonhound approaching me more.

The real issue I think lies with the shelter system and culture around dog ownership and breeding in the US, but that’s a whole other conversation.

honestly while it is true that there are just too many pit bulls in general i think any conversation about pit bulls that doesn't address the fact that racism plays a big role in the demonization of these dogs is going to be a waste of time

also fwiw in my area at least there are nearly as many german shepherds, another powerful breed that, unlike pit bulls, is often utilized by the police to brutalize people, as there are pit mixes. and yet people aren't nearly as afraid of them. there is a reason for that and it has very little to do with the dogs themselves

so i think it's a mistake to claim that pit bulls are only fearmongered about because they're powerful dogs that are relatively common. because there are other breeds that fit that bill that aren't demonized nearly as much

plus yknow most people absolutely suck shit at breed id so when someone says "i got attacked by a pit bull" that could mean anything from an actual pit bull type dog to a cane corso to a labrador retriever to a rottweiler. breed id is simply not a very reliable way to classify dog attacks, there's a reason the CDC stopped doing it

also idk where you're located but there are a ton of cane corso bybs that have popped up in the last decade lol so yes i do see them pretty often. i know someone whose byb corso fucked him up so bad he needed his arm amputated at the shoulder. the dog had gone after his wife and when he tried to stop it the dog redirected onto him.

i don't know why we're pretending that pit bulls are the only common powerful breed in the US when rotties, gsds, boxers and various mastiff breeds are pretty common in most areas.
