you can pry starting sentences with 'and' or 'but' out of my cold, dead hands
op how does it feel to be the most correct person on earth
Not surprisingly, I will take this opportunity to point out it has never been grammatically incorrect to start a sentence with “and” or “but.” There are many sources that prove this “rule” has never been part of good grammar. Here is one most folks should know well:
FANBOYS might not get you far
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary of English Usage begins its entry on and with this statement: "Everybody agrees that it’s all right to begin a sentence with and, and nearly everybody admits to having been taught at some past time that the practice was wrong." The entry notes that there has been speculation that sentence-initial ands were discouraged to prevent children from stringing together interminable lists of clauses or sentences. While it makes sense to avoid an enormous pile of independent clauses in one's writing, it seems unlikely that trying to change the way people naturally use the language will solve this problem. There are times when it would be ill-advised to begin a sentence with and or but, and there are times when it works just fine.
I start sentences with "and" or "but" a lot in my Star Trek personal logs because that's how people talk, especially informally.
rewatching the “ghosts of illyria” episode in snw and i’ve just realized, do we ever get a reason why the illyrians are interested in joining the federation other than show’s central “joining the federation should be aspired to because it’s Good” tenet? what sort of support do they need in exchange for being willing to give up what is the foundation of their culture and that they’re willing to segregate cities under their provisional membership? was it internal collapse? a political or cultural crisis?
These are such good points.
Could upgrades to sensors have made the Vaultera Nebula no longer the safe haven it once was for a species not motivated by conquest?
Could Illyrian ships have suffered even more following their run-in with Archer during Star Trek: Enterprise, the culture’s spacefaring technology picked apart by thieves, leading the society to turn inward?
Could Illyrians themselves have been made self-hating by anti-Augment propaganda, their peaceful practices cast as wrong and “other” by those who imposed human history on Illyrians?
So many possibilities …
I just think it's because the Federation is considered a shining example of interplanetary cooperation so they wanted to be a part of it. They didn't want to stand alone, they wanted to be part of a community and were willing to do what they needed.

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to five other writers! 😍 (and tell us why you chose those!) ❤️
Thanks for the ask @pc-corner
1. Judge of Character (VOY/DS9)
This I was inspired to write after reading the AO3 fic"Stacking the Stones" by Rocky_T & SeemaG which established that Owen Paris knew Admiral Leyton. I love the “friend becomes traitor” trope and Leyton’s fall from grace was too good to pass up. It also includes one my favorite lines that I’ve written:
I am sorry about Tom, Owen.” Leyton called out. When Owen turned around, he added. “If it’s any consolation, at least he won’t be around when the Dominion takes over Earth.”
2. The Hero of Starbase 74 (VOY)
This was one of my first Star Trek fics. Ever since I read the Stargazer novels which introduced Owen Paris’s brother, Cole, who harbored the same self-doubts that Tom had, I knew that Cole was going to die heroically and add to the legacy that crushed Tom. Sadly, the novel series just ended, and we never had that moment. So, after having this in my head for twenty years, I finally decided to share it.
3. The History of the Starfleet Uniform
I’ve always been fascinated by the various Starfleet uniform changes across the series, so inspired by other fanfiction in-universe reference books, I decided to do a deep dive and write a Starfleet Academy report on the History of Starfleet Uniforms from 2233 – 2401. I did a lot of research at Memory Alpha, and it was so much fun fleshing out the reason for the multiple duty uniform chances.
4. Living in Anger (TNG/Dominion War)
This was an ambitious one. I’ve never read the Star Trek novel “The Battle of Betazed” but I’ve always been curious about it, particularly because it involves Deanna Troi—one of my favorite characters. So, this was my take on the plan to drive the Dominion out of Betazed. There is a lot of intense emotion here from Deanna and those are some of my favorite scenes to watch on screen.
5. Mystery of Leva 10, Section A (VOY)
This story came about after I reread the novel Homecoming and decided the villain, Admiral Covington, needs to be brought into the Prime Universe. I’m proud of this one because it’s more plot-driven than my usual fics.

Is there going to be a Star Trek Winter Gift Exchange this year? I could've sworn one was announced but I haven't heard anything.
I'm also curious as to whether there will be a Merry Month of Cohen this May?
2025 in Review
I know I'm a few days late, but I thought about doing this in NYE and didn't, so here it is. 2025 was a big year, mostly because of prompts:
In January, I participated in Voyager Week celebrating VOY's 30th anniversary. One who week of VOY stories. The story there with the most hits and kudos was the J/C fic--New Possibilities Amid Isolation's End - TVgirll1971 - Star Trek: Voyager [Archive of Our Own]
For the gift exchange, I created a backstory for Lon Suder: The Beast - TVgirll1971 - Star Trek: Voyager [Archive of Our Own]
I participated in The Merry Month of Cohen with Shame and the Chaos Goblin - TVgirll1971 - Star Trek: The Next Generation [Archive of Our Own] - story that focused on Rachel Garret there during the start of the Bajoran occupation
Participated in the Fandom Potluck Dinner with A Toast to Friendship - TVgirll1971 - Star Trek: Deep Space Nine [Archive of Our Own] --vignettes of Julian Bashir and Miles O'Brien throughout the seasons
I wrote 2 Dominion War fics (one not posted yet) This was. It's a documentary-style piece which discusses an underground railroad out of Cardassian space during the war-The Crimson Railway - TVgirll1971 - Star Trek: Voyager [Archive of Our Own]
With the Dominion War and Miles O'Birien in my head at about the same time, I thought of this Sonny Boy - TVgirll1971 - Star Trek: Deep Space Nine [Archive of Our Own] -- a letter to Miles from his father on Earth
I wrote 2 SNW fic set in Season 3, both Pike/Betel:
Taking Care of It - TVgirll1971 - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (TV) [Archive of Our Own] - post-"through the Lens of Time"
To Marie - TVgirll1971 - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (TV) [Archive of Our Own] - post "New Life and New Civilizations"
Finally, my biggest endeavor. A series of post-episode logs set during the TOS era. Mostly personal log, but some official, also some official memos. I started this series in May and ended 2025 with five eps left in the TV series.
After Mission Logs - TVgirll1971 - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (TV), Star Trek: The Original Series [Archive of Our Own]

| coffee shop or flower shop | au or fix-it Both, of course. | enemies to lovers or childhood friends Not that I write it with my OTP but I like the trope. | angst or fluff Both. The fluff after the angst? Heaven. | love at first sight or pining | modern au or historic au I was going to say 'modern' but then realised I've written some historic... | break up & make up or proposal & wedding | get together or established relationship They're equally fun! | soulmates or unrequited Neither, thanks. | fake dating or secret dating Both! Definitely. | obvious pining or domestic fluff | hurt/comfort or crack When the crack turns into hurt/comfort! | meet the parents or meet cute I prefer meet weird. |
TG is absolutely right! >> Ask a bi and you’re going to get a lot of “both!” lol (Some I just don't care about either option.)
Tagging: Val'tor @more-better-words and @trekbec82 @papercranesong @curator-on-ao3 @ten-cent-sleuth and anyone else who wants to think about what they like (if you don't do tropes as such, what ideas catch your interest?)

Instead of choosing, I’ll highlight in pink everything I like:
| coffee shop or flower shop | au or fix-it | enemies to lovers or childhood friends | angst or fluff | love at first sight or pining | modern au or historic au | break up & make up or proposal & wedding | get together or established relationship | soulmates or unrequited | fake dating or secret dating | obvious pining or domestic fluff | hurt/comfort or crack | meet the parents or meet cute
So, um, yeah. I like most of the things? (Disclaimers: I’ve never actually read one of the shop AUs, but they sound fine. Also, I’m very picky for historical AUs.)
Tagging everyone who wants to play! 🥳
THIS OR THAT
| coffee shop or flower shop (I'm not opposed to flower shop though) | au or fix-it (Not sure. If by fix-it, you mean explain it, then yeah. But fixing to "change it' to me is still au) | enemies to lovers or childhood friends | angst or fluff (but usually not real heavy, dark angst) | love at first sight or pining | modern au or historic au (not really into au's) | break up & make up or proposal & wedding | get together or established relationship (no preference) | soulmates or unrequited | fake dating or secret dating (neither really) | obvious pining or domestic fluff | hurt/comfort or crack (though sometimes I do like some crack) | meet the parents or meet cute
Note--these are preferences. Just because I didn't select something doesn't mean I won't ever read something like it.
I’m sure this has been said before, but it fascinates me how Janeway’s major hairstyle changes (bun to ponytail, ponytail to bob) are so obviously due to the plot of one particular episode (Future’s End and Year of Hell, respectively) in which, say, the bun would look strange on the streets of then-modern Los Angles and the ponytail, no matter how mussed, wouldn’t adequately capture the depths of the year of hell.
And the production team kind of went, yeah, wow we like that, let’s keep it.
The fact that both hair-changing episodes are two-parters that deal with time is probably a coincidence … and a two nickels joke.
FWIW, Kate Mulgrew has taken credit for Janeway's bob. She said she thought it was silly for a woman in Janeway's position to fuss so much with her hair, and demanded something easier and more professional looking.
I have to admit that I find character's changing hairstyles fascinating sometimes. In fact, I have written not just one, but two, short fics regarding why Janeway changed her hair.
Now, that I think of it, I did the same for Deanna Troi after "Man of the People"
Thank you to @the-lady-general, @lorcaswhisky, and @deadheaddaisy for tagging me in various WIP/last line games! ❤️❤️❤️
The last lines I wrote for my WIP are:
There’s a sharp inhalation, and Jim snaps to attention, shoulders back, chest out. “My apologies, ma’am. Captain Jim Kirk. I didn’t mean to—”
“Make a pass at me? Yes, you did. And don’t call me ‘ma’am.’ You outrank me. But my husband thought very highly of you, so I’m willing to hear what you have to say.” Una gestures toward the white-plush chairs angled for conversation. Chris had wanted the chairs for emergency briefings, a way to keep Starfleet business restricted to the foyer. Una had chosen a wide, armless design to ensure larger species could be comfortable. Though, hopefully Una is the only officer whose chest constricts with anxiety to see a chair with arms.
Jim steps inside. He sits awkwardly as Una lets the door close with a soft click, padd by her side, knees tight—uniform skirts seem shorter every year—to sit in the other chair.
(I’m finally working on my AOS Una/AOS Kirk fic! 🎉)
Tagging everyone who wants to play. 💕
For the last line I wrote game. This is the latest in my "TOS Post-Mission Logs" series. This is the last line of Sulu's personal log after the incident with Gorgan and the children of the Starnes' expedition.
"They say exploring space is this grand adventure and it is, but [shakes his head] sometimes it hurts like hell."
I figured I might as well do a poll with the top four Treks. I suspect DS9 will still win, but I'm curious about how people who didn't vote for these four will pick. Listing in chronological order.
Which of these is your favorite Star Trek series?
The Original Series
The Next Generation
Deep Space 9
Voyager
Please reblog so Voyager doesn't automatically win!

A: All the Devils are Here (VOY; rated M; 15,337 words; hallucinogenic sick fic set post-Investigations when Maquis vs Starfleet could have still been a thing.)

F: First Officer's Log (VOY; rated T; 3,244 words; Chakotay spirals after the events of ‘Threshold’ and Tuvok is supremely unhelpful.)

P: PADDemonium (VOY; rated M; 6,155 words; my first fic, or close to it. Someone spikes the fruit compote and raunchy non-canon-pairing shenanigans ensue.)

R: Resilience (PIC; rated G; 517 words; Raffi’s life after Seven.)
