Real thing that changed how i write: I started asking "what does this character think is wrong with them" and separately "what is actually wrong with them." Those two things are almost never the same. She thinks she's too much. She's actually terrified of being too little. He thinks he's bad at commitment. He's actually just never met someone he trusted enough. The gap between their diagnosis of themselves and the real thing, that's your character arc right there. you don't have to explain it. just write both.

What are people’s thoughts lately on first person fanfics? Because I still don’t really see many, and I remember back in the day (this being over 10 years ago) this was considered cringe in fandom spaces.

But the reason I’m wondering is because over the last few years it’s become such a trend in publishing and most people reading fantasy and romance prefer first person over third. We could have another entire conversation about why that is, but that’s probably for another post.

However, I’ve also noticed a positive shift in the way fandom interacts with Canon/Oc or even Canon/Reader (though this might just be the nature of video game based fandoms rather than an overall rule.) I’m interested in seeing what other people think.

This was the unedited beginning of an idea I had for a Hancock & Fahrenheit backstory fic—starting with how they meet. I like the idea of her being his adopted daughter.
