The little girl has a cloud of dark curls, huge brown eyes, and an angelic demeanour. She’s evidently related to Colin: as evidenced by her height - or lack of - her protective hold on a Hot Wheels toy, and the plaster on her knee. (Apparently Colin’s niece is just as accident prone as he is.)
Isaac has never been so terrified in his entire life.
“I don’t get it,” Colin laughs, all the affection in the world in his eyes as he watches his boyfriend and his youngest niece meet for the first time. “You’ve got nieces and nephews yourself.”
“Yeah, but they’re, like, mine,” Isaac grumbles. With infinite care he crouches down to allow Anwyn to pat her hands over his neon purple-and-pink tracksuit. “They’re used to me.”
“She gets on with most people, don’t you ‘Wyn?”
“I don’t just want her to get on with me,” Isaac says quietly. “I want her to like me. Because she’s yours.”
He glances up just in time to see Colin glancing away, scuffing his shoes against the skirting board and pretending like he isn’t tearing up.
Meeting your partner’s family for the first time is always daunting. But Colin’s relationship with his family is on shaky ground as it is, and Isaac is determined to do this right.
He cocks a doubtful eye at Anwyn. “Well, what do we think, kiddo?”
Blinking solemnly, Anwyn regards him for a moment before picking up her mother’s makeup case. “I want to look like my mummy.”
By the time Colin’s sister Sian returns home it’s debateable whether Anwyn looks more like her carefully madeup mother or like a circus clown - but she’s beaming so broadly that it hardly matters. Colin’s purple eyeshadow gives off the impression that he’s been given two black eyes; Isaac has been given several beautiful red tattoos up and down his arms (ruining Sian’s best lipstick in the process). All three are grinning proudly.
Isaac’s first visit to Swansea is, he decides, a definite success.
