i don't blame mitch one bit for leaving. the abuse i have seen directed towards him when he became the scapegoat for everything that went wrong for the leafs would've driven a more careless player away long before. he absolutely deserves to go where he wants and get away from toronto media. wish him the best in vegas

mitch and auston meeting in an elevator in helsinki in 2016, months before auston was drafted before the leafs, mitch having only the tiniest inkling that auston might one day be his teammate instead of an opponent. mitch being at a concert the night it was announced the leafs had first overall, the crowd starting an auston matthews chant and mitch in the middle of it all. auston smashing the glass off a pass from mitch in one of their first practices. them spending seasons talking about wanting to play together before finally getting a chance to share a line. now, years later, they’ve set records together. their names practically synonymous, never one without the other. the invisible string of it all.
