the thing about lotr that the movies don’t convey so fully is how the story is set in an age heavily overshadowed by all the ages before. they’re constantly traveling through ruins, discussing the glory of days gone by, the empires of men are much diminished, the elves (especially galadriel) are described as seeming incongruent, frozen in time….some of the imagery is even near-apocalyptic, like the ruins of moria and of course the landscape surrounding mordor

this is a strange thought to me, somehow: that the archetypal “high fantasy” story is set at the point where the…fantasy…used to be much higher? this is not the golden age; this is a remnant

Apparently she was in a hospital because she was hysterical and had a breakdown. There are pictures of her exiting her plane and she looks really bad. Her mother and her both wore black as a sign of grief

but what does ‘nice’ mean? we’ve been conditioned to think barren grass lawns and minimalism is ‘nice’, its all subjective.

It goes above and beyond wanting the yard to look nice. Personally I don’t care on an individual level what kind of grass or lack thereof grows on someone’s property. However, other people care a LOT and will FORCE conformity using the legal system. There’s a petition going around in my hometown to make it legally MANDATORY to keep your grass 2 inches or shorter, because get this, “its a public health issue.”

The idea is that longer grass makes it easier for mosquitoes to breed (mosquitoes do not work like that) and it doesn’t really matter if you’re disabled or elderly or just plain don’t have the strength or time or money not to obsess over your stupid grass that much, if the city decrees it as law, you fuck up and you get fined.

You dare to step outside the box even a little and you get punished. Let alone if you try to rewild your lawn with naturally growing native grass. This bullshit is ALREADY political and believe me it wasn’t the “lawns are stupid” crowd who made it that way.

In a simple experiment, researchers at the University of Chicago sought to find out whether a rat would release a fellow rat from an unpleasantly restrictive cage if it could. The answer was yes.

The free rat, occasionally hearing distress calls from its compatriot, learned to open the cage and did so with greater efficiency over time. It would release the other animal even if there wasn’t the payoff of a reunion with it. Astonishingly, if given access to a small hoard of chocolate chips, the free rat would usually save at least one treat for the captive — which is a lot to expect of a rat.

The researchers came to the unavoidable conclusion that what they were seeing was empathy — and apparently selfless behavior driven by that mental state.
