WIRED Magazine, Retract "The Painful Truth About Long Covid"
so WIRED has published an article on Long COVID which uncritically platforms pseudoscientific unsubstantiated 'brain retraining' programs as a treatment, and without even so much as talking to anyone with the disease who has been drastically worsened by them (it's a lot). I'd recommend reading the petition in full or the article below if you want more details on why that's not only dangerous but insulting towards the many people with Long COVID who still live without approvied treatments for the disease. instead of criticising the lack of scientific funding for them or other problems, this magazine decide to platform this sh*t. The framing of it as a hidden 'truth' that these programs work when that is completely scientifically unsubstantiated and they have harmed many people is especially vile.
here is a good article on why these programs are not scientifically or ethically valid and the harm they can do, written by a person with Long COVID and ME/CFS (another related and often comorbid disease that these programs also prey upon, and they profess to work the same way)
How brain retraining therapies intersect with the biopsychosocial model
PLEASE share this and sign if you can especially if you are not in the community, there is a huge amount of ignorance and gaslighting that occurs, including by some medical professionals, around 'interventions' like this

I have been WAITING for more magic clothing ngl.
I’m watching that documentary “Before Stonewall” about gay history pre-1969, and uncovered something which I think is interesting.
The documentary includes a brief clip of a 1954 televised newscast about the rise of homosexuality. The host of the program interviewed psychologists, a police officer, and one “known homosexual”. The “known homosexual” is 22 years old. He identifies himself as Curtis White, which is a pseudonym; his name is actually Dale Olson.
So I tracked down the newscast. According to what I can find, Dale Olson may have been the first gay man to appear openly on television and defend his sexual orientation. He explains that there’s nothing wrong with him mentally and he’s never been arrested. When asked whether he’d take a cure if it existed, he says no. When asked whether his family knows he’s gay, he says that they didn’t up until tonight, but he guesses they’re going to find out, and he’ll probably be fired from his job as well. So of course the host is like …why are you doing this interview then? and Dale Olson, cool as cucumber pie, says “I think that this way I can be a little useful to someone besides myself.”
1954. 22 years old. Balls of pure titanium.
Despite the pseudonym, Dale’s boss did indeed recognize him from the TV program, and he was promptly fired the next day. He wrote into ONE magazine six months later to reassure readers that he had gotten a new job at a higher salary.
Curious about what became of him, I looked into his life a little further. It turns out that he ultimately became a very successful publicity agent. He promoted the Rocky movies and Superman. Not only that, but get this: Dale represented Rock Hudson, and he was the person who convinced him to disclose that he had AIDS! He wrote the statement Rock read. And as we know, Rock Hudson’s disclosure had a very significant effect on the national conversation about AIDS in the U.S.
It appears that no one has made the connection between Dale Olson the publicity agent instrumental in the AIDS debate and Dale Olson the 22-year-old first openly gay man on TV. So I thought I’d make it. For Pride month, an unsung gay hero.
RATING: RELIABLE
you can listen to the clip of the 1954 interview here and find him on wikipedia here
white people will literally be like if u arent nice to me Im going to become a nazi. and think they’re making a great argument
this stupid shit has been around for so long and it’s crazy to me there are still people with enough rocks in their brain to believe it. “Oughhhhh if you aren’t nice to you oppressors they’ll become bigots instead of allies” if someone’s support for marginalized groups hinges entirely on whether or not that group is niceys, they’re by definition not effective or useful allies and, by admission of this argument, an active danger to the communities theyre supposed to be allied with because they can Enter Bigot Mode the second they become displease
man sometimes i think of the “clanker” trend and its like man some people DESPERATELY want to be racist without actually being perceived as racist. im a Star Wars fan so when i first heard it i was like okay chuckle that’s funny I hate ai and its a reference to a thing i like and then it gained traction and people were saying it with SO MUCH like…enthusiasm and venom that it felt like yall just want to say another word. Its not subtle. Truly an insane internet experience.
Like why do y'all wanna say a slur so bad lmao. Why is the urge to be a bigot "without harm" so tempting to you? I have never in my life wanted to call anything a slur, that I would be so geeked to have the opportunity. Grow a spine and say the slurs you really wanna say, and live with the consequences!
Justin Jordan made a great youtube video about the origins and extent of the trend (people made a lot of robot versions of slurs and of actual Black people). Take care if you're watching because some of the people making the clanker "jokes" he's reacting to didn't do much at all to hide the racism.
one time a guy i know whose girlfriend was heavily pregnant didn’t tweet anything for a whole day so i texted him ‘congrats on your baby’ and made him think i had some kind of baby precognition
like six months after that just after halloween i asked to see his son dressed as a ‘fat baby pumpkin’ and he was like ‘who told you’ and i said ‘no one. it’s halloween. you have a fat baby. he’s going to be a pumpkin’

AMC: Listen to the music of The Vampire Lestat anywhere you stream music!
Me: LIES!!! I STILL CAN'T FIND THE FULL VERSION OF "BLACK LICORICE" ANYWHERE!!!
I get the feeling most the people upset about Gabriella's gender presentation (again based solely on a few glimpses) have not actually read all the books because she's NOT canonically transmasc. That's an interpretation or headcanon that people have, and that's absolutely valid!
But it has never been text. Her relationship with her gender is COMPLICATED for reasons that seem both internal and external, but it IS canon that she sometimes presents more feminine when she's with Lestat.
But this idea that she starts solely presenting as masc after becoming a vampire isn't true. She's still wearing gowns in the coven in Auvergne in modern day!
So far, the GLIMPSES we've seen of her aren't conflicting with her character in the books.
Gabrielle de Lioncourt is someone with a complicated relationship to gender written by someone with a complicated relationship to gender, which also guides a lot of interpretations. Anne Rice, herself, was pretty feminine presenting, but she often spoke about feelings of gender non-conformity. This is also a valid interpretation. And yes, I do think gnc people who don't fit neatly into one box or another also deserve representation.
It's one thing to be disappointed that Gabriella doesn't fit your interpretation or headcanon (I get it!), but it's another to act like this is somehow sanitizing the queerness of the character because it's not catering to your preferences.
These are all my keywords.
