i always get so Fucked Up (positive) whenever i get to this point in the novel

bc it is so exceedingly rare to find maturity like this even in adult romances

more often than not, the partner who'd recently went through heartbreak would be told--at least implicitly--to forget their past hurt, to simply get over it and move on. their new partner will love them better than their old love ever could, so it's better to just accept a future where they could be happier together

but kirishima doesn't say that. he can't say that bc he still has so much love for his late wife

it makes so much sense that'd he'd understand yokozawa's heartache and lingering feelings towards takano--he might even empathize with the fact that yokozawa's feelings are unrequited. kirishima himself can no longer express how much he loves his wife to her anymore bc she's gone. he knows exactly what it's like to have so much love and devotion to someone who will never return it, even if his and yokozawa's circumstances are completely different

but he knows that it's not easy to simply let go of that love and heartache, knows that it might even be impossible. he knows that when the love is there, it shouldn't be tossed aside just for something (or someone) new

so kirishima lets yokozawa know that it's perfectly fine to hold space in his heart for takano, that there's nothing wrong with the fact that yokozawa loved and wasn't loved in return. he calls yokozawa's feelings precious and says they need to be cherished bc it's exactly what he had to learn after his wife passed away

there's nothing wrong with treasuring the affections you had for someone, and it's possible to hold those feelings closely even while exploring a new relationship

yokozawa could never replace kirishima's wife, and neither of them would ever want that, the same way kirishima could never replace takano's place in yokozawa's life

bc he accepts all of yokozawa: from his stubbornness, to his surly attitude, to his capability to so purely love those who will never love him back the same way

and god i could just weep with how much that Fucks Me Up Every Time 😭❤️😭❤️😭❤️

zoro and sanji are injured. chopper advises them to temporarily stop drinking and smoking respectively to help speed up their recovery, warning them with words along the line of "zoro if i see your hands even touch a bottle... " and "sanji i swear if you light another cigarette..." of course the both of them are stubborn when it comes to their vices. however they have found a loophole.

it starts with zoro barging into the kitchen obviously wanting to drink but knows he can't so he goes to annoy the cook instead. sanji only knows one way to deal with an irritating marimo during his precious dinner prep time, so he finds a bottle of sake and opens it. zoro raises an eyebrow because they both know he can't drink, but regardless, sanji presses the mouth of the bottle against his lips and when zoro opens his mouth to question the cook, he tilts the bottle to let the alcohol flow into his mouth. when zoro swallows, he tries the grab the bottle, only for sanji to kick his hand away.

"no hands on any bottles, remember? "

later that night while the two were doing the dishes, zoro sees the cook fidgeting with the cigarette between his lips. it's unlighted of course, has been the whole night. just there to try and mimick the same comfort of a litted one, but very clearly failing to do so with how stressed he looked. sighing, zoro wipes his hands and reaches into the cook's suit pocket. sanji turns to zoro and looks about a millisecond away from kicking his face in, but before thoughts could turn into action, zoro's hands were suddenly cupping his jaw and the subtle flick of the lighter was heard. the familiar dim orange glow and heat was felt, but as much as he wanted to, sanji didn't inhale, only looked at the marimo incredulously. zoro only shrugged.

"what? it's not like you were the one who lit it. "
