When Brad Pitt did Fight Club, he was cutting weight for every single scene to maintain his physique at 155. I’ve you’ve ever cut weight, you know how horrible that must have been. He did it because they needed a “look”.

Changing Tatum said his Magic Mike body doesn’t last for more than five days. He starved down and dehydrated his already fit physique for a “look”.

The male soldiers on Spartacus: Blood and Sand were eating pretty much chicken and veggies for every meal to maintain a “look”.

Why is this such a big deal? Because all these characters are considered physical goals for men. These are actual unobtainable physical standards for men. Male body image issues get swept under the rug so often that some people don’t even think they exist.

100% ripped look is literally fighting-fit shape. Boxers can’t maintain it, they have to do a special diet a couple of weeks out from the weigh-in, and if they fuck it up, or the fight gets rescheduled (common trick in the dodgy world of boxing) their stamina gets badly compromised. Same with body builders cutting for competitions. They’re also VERY prone to things like pneumonia. The state Pitt was in in FC isn’t at all natural, and cannot be maintained without risking your health. You also have other examples like Christian Bale going from underweight in The Machinist, to bulking in a few month for Batman Begins. That wasn’t remotely possible naturally, he definitely used peds. Same with Tom Hardy and Bane “I just cut back on cardio”, that’s not how rapid mass gain works AT ALL. These standards can actually be considered unattainable because you need to use drugs to hit them.
