As someone who is coming from a place of EXTREME privilege (I am a cis girl, who lives in one of the most accepting cities in the country with the money and supportive parents to undergo a medical transition if I want to)
I just want to add on to this that there is still hope left. The Supreme Court has sent out a public message to the Parliament suggesting that the bill should be squashed as it infringes on the Fundamental Right Article 21 (Right to Self determination comes under Right to Life with dignity) of the Constitution.
1. SC is against this bill
2. SC is backing it's 2014 Judgement of NALSA vs UOI case (Right to Self determination, explicitly stated as a Fundamental Right under Article 21)
After this Bill becomes an Act (law), I think it can go two ways
1. A Trans rights activist or group approaches the SC with a PIL (Public Interest Litigation) of a writ of Mandamus under Article 32 (judicial remedies) and SC can declare this Act violative of Article 21 and 13 (Any law or order cannot violate fundamental rights). And they will probably use severability and remove the part about not recognising self determination as a valid marker for a Trans person.
2. SC takes the case Suo moto (on its own) and under Judicial Review, strikes down the law against self determination.
Also my trans friends, there are cis people who do care about you. We were discussing this bill in our Legal Studies class today and every single student (40 of us) was outright pissed with this shit. Almost all of us have signed the petition against the bill and were even ready to approach the SC ourselves (imagine 40 students who are barely 17-18 all cis, all upper middle class) who are rightfully pissed about this shit..
