Following Steve’s death, it’s up to the Howling Commandos to gather the Captain’s belongings and deliver them to the appropriate next of kin. Buried in Steve’s rucksack they find a newly purchased jewelry box, receipt still attached with a note scribbled in pencil, ‘April 9’. Not knowing what else to do, they open it. They find a necklace inside - nothing too terribly special, though the small diamond in the middle looks pricy for an army penchant during wartime. But it’s the carefully handwritten note inside the box that makes their hearts fall to the ground.

“For my Best Girl on her birthday. Maybe this can be the year I take you dancing. -a scrawny kid from Brooklyn”

None of them can decide whether it would be crueler of them to give it to her or to say nothing.

In 2016, after Peggy’s funeral, Peggy’s family gives the necklace and the note back to Steve. She’d had the pendant converted into a locket at some point, and inside the tiny lid was wedged an old photo of Steve when he was skinny and small.

At the bottom of Steve’s handwritten note, Peggy had added a note of her own. It’s dated January 2016, and makes Steve wonder if she knew she would die.

“My Darling,

This was the year that you took me dancing. I shall treasure the memory for as long as I live.

With deepest love, Your Peggy”

No one asks why the Captain keeps a ladies’ locket on his dresser after that day.

It’s possible that the most important part of Harry Potter, the entirety of the series, is in PoA when Harry realizes that no one is coming to save him, that it wasn’t his father he saw casting the patronus and sending the dementors away. When he realizes that he has to save himself and he does it.
