I am wondering if someone can suggest an example of a situation where you have a family of modules (E_t)_{t \in [1,\infty) } alongside, for every a, b \ge 1, an isomorphism m_{a,b} : E_{a} \oplus E_{b} \to E_{a+b} ?

this is probably terribly behaved in general because you can do very Hamel basis-y stuff with it

Not only should we normalize the idea that aromantic people can be in relationships that are purely sexual and it’s not manipulative or weird to have sex with someone you don’t feel romantically towards, we also have to normalize that sex without romance can be soft and kind and LONG LASTING! Just because a relationship is sexual that doesn’t mean it’s just a one night stand or a temporary thing. That can be a commitment if you want it to be.

Logicians still being over-represented tickles me. And not, like, by a little bit - by a massive huge amount. 35 whole logicians so far. That’s more logicians than in almost all* universities.

I also wonder how much of that is that a lot of mathematicians in other areas are finding themselves split between 2-3 potential options. If you do AG do you put algebra or geometry? Same with AT. I do geometric group theory and I could’ve put down any of algebra/geometry/topology. Even analysis at a stretch

That one xkcd comic about average familiarity but it works in the opposite direction when mathematicians are talking to friends in radically different subfields.

I’ve been asked more than once if I know what a group is. At first I assumed it was sexism but then I realised everyone does it.

tbh as a group theorist, I fully expect every mathematician I talk to to have known what a group is at some point. But definitions are easy to forget if you don’t touch them for a while so like I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask someone who might not have seen a group since early undergraduate

I’m yet to be convinced that like, calling most modern homotopy theory and most scheme theory geometry/topology isn’t the greatest deception that their respective fields have pulled off
