A battle between good and weevil
Wait, it got better.
He does this a lot, to my deep surprise in undergrad:
For reference, the reason nobody likes this book and you can press tofu with it is that it’s about 1600 pages long.
It’s also, by all accounts, the origin of Cousin Throckmorton
"Am I odd? Is there something wrong wit me, like Mrs.Tifton said?" Skye knelt down on the wet grass and looked straight into Batty's eyes. "No you stupid idiot, there's nothing wrong with you."
this is hand-to-dog how sisters talk to each other
ok this is maybe an insane take, but to me, the Penderwicks series feels like someone saw one of those "when I was a kid we ate dirt and drank from the hose and had FUN and it was BETTER than these kids with their NINTENDO" Facebook memes and was like "let me make this my series' whole vibe"
further, and perhaps more insane a take, is that the whole thing is a conservative dog-whistle like, why is TV/Internet never mentioned? like, the Penderwicks seem like the kind of family not to have a TV (which is valid, don't get me wrong), and it's set in the 00s/10s, but it's never explained and it just feels weird, like Birdsall is trying to prove a point about kids' access to technology. Sure, Skye seems to know all these nerdy pop-culture references in Book 4, but we never figure out how she managed it.
It feels very conservative-homeschool-co-op-coded to avoid talking about it altogether rather than show how a modern family sets healthy boundaries around technology. idk, there are a lot of things about the characters and story of the Penderwicks that are objectively _fine_ (basically free-range kids who are very independent, managing household chores and meals, older siblings caring for younger siblings (and parentification is definitely a thing that happens), sense of social etiquette with adults (especially in the last two books), and strong sense of morality,) but also make me feel like the series was tailor-written to appeal to conservative parents looking for a piece of media that validates their reality, rather than kids.
maybe I'm just jumping at shadows, maybe it's just not that well-written and that's what's setting me off, but ????? idk ?????
Stellar Temperature!

There are many different types of stars in the Universe, from Protostars to Red Supergiants. They can be categorized according to their mass
Instead of doomscrolling lately I have been reading my PDFs and it turns out if you do this you learn a whole bunch of stuff. I’m afraid I must recommend it
Meet Our Dino-Sized Telescope!
This illustration shows the relative scale of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope and a Tyrannosaurus rex. Roman is over 42 feet (12.7 meters) long — about the length of a T. rex — and over 14 feet (4.4 meters) wide when fully deployed. Roman also weighs around 18,000 pounds, or 8,000 kilograms (dry mass), which is the approximate mass of a T. rex as well.
Did you know NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is both roughly as long and as massive as a Tyrannosaurus rex? This observatory, which will move to the launch site at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida very soon, is over 42 feet (12.7 meters) long and weighs around 18,000 pounds (8,000 kilograms), not including the fuel. Let’s explore some of the components that bring Roman to T. rex proportions.

I hate when king arthur has all these fussy little steps in the instructions and you're like "no way do these fussy little steps matter" but you try it and they do. they matter so much.
I thought you meant Camelot quests and I was like "that's fair, 'never pick a four leaf clover on the last Wednesday of the month' IS a fussy little step that shouldn't matter" but then I was like "wait isn't that also a flour company"
nooo I am not a beleaguered knight of the round table I am making elaborate focaccia 😭

eggs are most delicious when least touched by fire (so poached, sunny side up, etc declining in quality to over easy, hard boiled). this is because fire cleanses the egg of sin (primary source of flavor). this is also why the objectively most delicious egg is soft boiled (hardened purified exterior traps the delicious sin inside the soft gooey interior), and why scrambled eggs are morally ambiguous
couple things
deviled eggs are delicious bc, while hard boiled/cleansed of sin, as the name implies the sin has been artificially added back in (via mayonnaise)
raw eggs are indeed the Most Delicious, which is why consuming them inflicts divine punishment (salmonella) unless they have received exorcism (pasteurization)
rotten eggs smell like that bc the sin has been absolved. as with most things in life, the church is to blame
100% thought this was going to be a @inbabylontheywept joint, but that's just because of all the sin eating.
can i be wrong? yes. can the biggest, strongest, smartest gaudiest poltergeist be wrong? never. and so it stands. 10,000 years of raw egg.
Random thing for people to consider is that since Laika is the saint of one way trips should Felicette be known as the saint of safe landings since she did make it back to the ground safely
