even when they get older and their lives get busier, kise tries to go w midorima to get the lucky item of the day, schedule allowing

one day the lucky item is a candle and midorima is like all ready to go shopping for a candle bc that’s such an easy thing to buy and carry around and kise is just like ‘oh my god midorimacchi wait for two seconds’

and he just shuffles over the cabinet and pulls out a single small leftover birthday candle and hands it over and is like ‘there. now you can go do whatever you need to do today.’

and midorima just stares down at it like ‘oh’ bc for whatever reason he just didn’t think of the fact that they have candles at home and was all ready to go on this Quest for the perfect candle to help him get through his day and kise just so easily handed it over

Shintarou never manages to stay awake through an entire movie when they curl up under a blanket, but Ryouta doesn’t mind. It’s nice to be close to him, to have Shintarou next to him. He lets the television switch back to the menu screen, not quite ready to disturb Shintarou.

He adjusts Shintarou’s glasses, pushing them slightly up on his face so they don’t fall off into the blanket. The motion is enough to make Shintarou stir, and Ryouta feels that familiar flutter of emotion again. He thinks he started feeling it in high school, but that would make it years, and he can’t process that.

“Mm, Ryouta,” Shintarou says, eyes opening, “did you let me sleep through another movie?” He blinks, pushing a hand through his hair.

“You’ve been so busy studying,” Ryouta says instead of directly answering.

“But we were supposed to spend tonight together,” Shintarou says, a whine creeping into his voice.

Ryouta kisses him impulsively, even though they’ve only had a handful of kisses. This thing between them is taking time, and Ryouta doesn’t mind. He never expected their friendship to evolve this way, even if he’d hoped.

Shintarou stares at him when Ryouta pulls away, hand reaching out to stroke the curve of Ryouta’s chin. “You’re my best friend,” he says.

Ryouta thinks he knows what that means, and he kisses Shintarou again.

 Later, when Ryouta sends Shintarou home to get proper rest, he’ll linger in the door way watching Shintarou leave, and whisper I love you too to his shadow.

- The team captain is a stone-faced third-year with glasses and an implacable voice. The team captain is the last to leave the court. The team captain cannot leave the court. The team captain is imprisoned in the court by a line of salt.

- The team goes up into the mountains for hell training camp. From the window of the bus you see one tree catch flame, and then another. There are twenty people on the bus, but you only brought food enough for twelve. This is where the regulars will be selected.

- You are getting stronger and faster. Your night vision has improved and your fingernails keep growing. You cut them every night, but they are talons by morning. Your training is paying off. That know-it-all first-year has been a jackal for weeks now.

- There is one alumnus of the team who works at a shop near your school. He comes to cheer your team on sometimes. You catch him crying on the sidelines during a time-out. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry,” he says. The team manager has to lead him away.

- Despite being fifteen years old, one of the second-years on the team has the body of a full grown man. You help him bury it out back behind the clubhouse near the chain link fence. It is the last in a line of mounds of earth stretching far off to your left. To the right, you can see the flatter mounds of older graves. You have almost caught up with them. The second-year leans on his shovel, wiping sweat off his face, and smiles broadly. “Call me senpai,” he says.

- The I N T E R H I G H is coming. The I N T E R H I G H is almost here. You have to do your best at the I N T E R H I G H for the sake of the third-years. It is their last chance.

- Last year’s champions are at the I N T E R H I G H. One of your teammates tells you that they call them the Four Gods. Four Gods of what? you wonder, and are careful to avoid their gaze. They travel in a pack, tongues lolling, toenails clicking against the floor. “Their teeth weren’t that big last year,” your teammate whispers quietly, but not quietly enough. Their smiling vice-captain turns towards you and cracks open his eyes.

- Your captain achieves self-actualization in the middle of the final match. The pitch crumbles underneath his feet and all the spectators tip into the abyss, falling without a sound; outside the gym windows, the sea has come up to meet you. Across the net, the last of the Four Gods smiles slowly. “Did you think that this is my final form?” he says. Flies and wasps come pouring out of his mouth. His body begins to twist and change.

- The court goes on forever. The court goes on forever. You haven’t seen any of your teammates for days, but the game is still going on. Nobody swims free.

- A plume of smoke rises from the finish line. The cicadas are screaming. You are screaming. You are too late. It has begun.
