Oh, a human being is seeking a social response? Human being, the social animal wired to make and track social connection? A human desires the vital blood that permitted their species to survive for millennia? The human being who was born completely helpless and primed in every way by nature to seek attention and help from their community?
Wow thatās crazy. How embarrassing. Humiliating even. Should we isolate them from community? Should we call Wire Mother?
I had a dream the other day which I would love for it to be turned into a story and I was thinking about trying it out myself. The issue is that I'm not a writer and I have never written a story before. I really like your writing, your one of my favourites, so I was wondering if you have any tips for a 1st time writer? Mostly for the inbetween scenes, smut scenes, and some tips on how to spread the story so it reaches people on here? I'm an anxious person and am scared no one will read and I'll end up deleting it after 1 minute if no likes the post. I'm just a nervous. I already have what I think would be the 1st part ready and it would maybe be 2 or 3 parts in total. I also have ideas for other stories too. But am hesitating posting it. I have like only a few followers btw.
hii <3 long answer below
for tips, the biggest one i can give you is: write. even if itās just ideas, all of it counts. no one starts out knowing how to write well. writing is a skill, and like any skill, it comes with practice.
i started writing when i was 13 (in spanish, ofc), and i promise you the first fic i ever wrote is awfulš badly written and suuuper super cringey. iāve been writing in english on and off since 2020, but i only started taking it seriously around 2023/2024. improvement takes time, and thatās okay
if english isnāt your first language, donāt let that stop you at all. keep a dictionary app handy, look things up whenever you need to. i do it all the time. the same goes for synonyms, especially for common words like āsaidā or āaskedā
reading is another huge one. read fanfiction and books! itās one of the best ways to pick up vocabulary, pacing, and style, and it can inspire you without you even realizing it. i remember obsessively analyzing the way suzanne collins wrote āthe hunger gamesā because i loved her style sooooo much. iām a big annotator (yeah i write in my books, idc), and i used to jot down at the end of each chapter what i liked about the narration, dialogue, or structure. i learned so much doing that!!
another thing thatās helped me a lot is keeping a word list. whenever i come across a word i donāt know, or a word thatās used in a way i really like, i save it in my notes app. if i donāt know the meaning, i look it up and write that down too. itās been one of the easiest ways to expand my vocabulary over time, and i use it a lot when i write my own ficsšāāļø
for the inbetween scenes, my biggest tip is to skip them lmaoooo. there are no rules when it comes to writing fanfiction. if you donāt feel like writing something, you donāt have to! period.
if youāve read my fics, youāve probably noticed i do this a lot. i use time skips whenever i donāt feel like lingering on a scene for too long or going into unnecessary detail. a story can work perfectly fine if you focus only on the important moments. you donāt need to force yourself to write every transition just because you feel like you āshouldā. if a scene doesnāt excite you or feels like a chore, youāre allowed to skip it cuz itās your work!!! and only yours! and you can do whatever you want with it
something iāve seen work well for other writers is writing all the main scenes first, and then filling in the inbetween parts later if they feel like it. i donāt personally write that way, but it might be useful for you. every writer is different
as for smut scenes⦠listen. i dread writing smutššš»šš half the time i feel like iām repeating myself over and over while actively losing brain cells. iām not even jokingššš everything starts sounding the same to me āthis happens, then that happens, then this happens againā¦ā you get it
this is fr how i feel when i write smut:
when i write smut, i usually write based on my own experiences. if you donāt have much experience (or any at all, which is completely okay), talking to people who do can help. especially when it comes to describing how things feel, not just whatās happening. one thing i do think is important is not focusing only on the physical side. what makes a smut scene interesting is whatās going on in the charactersā heads. what are they feeling emotionally? are they nervous, excited, insecure, comfortable? are they thinking about the other person, or about something (or someone) else?
now⦠about reaching more people. tbh i donāt really know. i havenāt done anything special for my fics to reach others on this app. using specific tags helpsātagging the fandom, the characters, etc. it makes it easier for people who consume that kind of content to find your work. but beyond that, thereās no secret formula iām aware of
i do want you to know that worrying about your story not doing well is completely fair and valid, especially when youāve put so much time and care into it. but please believe me when i say that focusing too much on feedback will only sour your writing experience. feeling discouraged is something every writer goes through at some point. my perspective on this has changed a lot over the past few years, and i hope i can help shift yours too so you can focus more on enjoying the process and being proud of what YOU created
this is what ten likes look like on a post: 10ā¤ļø
but this is what ten likes look like irl:
imagine those ten people sitting down and reading something you wrote. thatās almost half of a high school class! i donāt even have ten friends
this is what twenty likes look like on a post: 20ā¤ļø
but this is what twenty likes look like irl:
thirty likes: 30ā¤ļø
a bit over thirty likes irl:
what iām trying to say is: donāt focus on the numbers. on social media, because we canāt see whoās behind the screen, itās easy to feel discouraged by ālowā likes. but in reality, there was someone on the other side who read your work, thought it was awesome, and chose to engage with it. even if itās just three likes, those are three REAL people!! and who knows? you could change the life of one of those three people with your writing. you truly never know the impact your words might have. so post that fic!!!!!!
someone out there needs your writing, even if that person is you. writing is a way to learn new things about the world and about yourself. itās a way to expand your creativity, to explore, and to understand yourself better.
and donāt stress about your follower count either. i started this account with zero followers. remember everyone starts somewhere
i really hope this helped youš and that it gave you a new way to look at things
