I've always had complicated feelings towards jiang cheng as a character. On one hand, I feel sympathy for him, on the other, I can't help but be upset by the choices he made. However, reading remnants of filth volume 6 game me something to think about.

Although both murong lian and jiang cheng are very similar in many ways, they both harbored resentment toward their brothers, shaped by the influence of their mothers words, and they were both driven by a desire to restore their family's legacy, murong lian seeking prosperity for wanshu manor, and jiang cheng aiming to rebuild the yunmeng jiang clan. There´s one particular situation that completely differentiates them, and that is murong lian´s decision to confront the emperor in front of a room full of nobles and commanders, where he essentially cleared gu mang's name alongside mengze.

The emperor had tried to use his insecurities and distrust of gu mang to manipulate him, but murong lian couldn't fully trust either the emperor or gu mang. Despite this, he kept the ring with gu mang´s soul safe and returned it when zhou he sought to destroy his mind, allowing gu mang to endure just a little longer. When it mattered, murong lian stood by gu mang´s side.

On the other hand, although jiang cheng initially spoke up to defend the wen remnants and wei wuxian against the other clans, he was pressured to prioritize the survival of his family and clan after being reminded that the yunmeng jiang clan was still weak after the massacre at lotus pier. He tried, unsuccessfully, to convince wei wuxian to do the same. Jiang cheng didn't want to risk going against the majority while his position was still unstable. Like the emperor with murong lian, the other sects used jiang cheng's weakness and insecurities to turn him against wei wuxian. It wasn't until his sister's death that he completely destroyed any possibility of reconciling with wei wuxian, leading the first siege of the burial mounds, which resulted in the deaths of wei wuxian and the wen remnants.

He chose to step away from wei wuxian´s side. They never truly reconciled, as jiang cheng's pride still held him back after all those years. But it was too late anyway, because wei wuxian had already found someone who would always stand by his side, no matter what.

Well I like it but it’s not very well written. Also it’s a visual mess. The plot doesnt make any sense and the creators suck and its politics oscillate from mildly problematic to frankly baffling. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. However. the character

Saying Xie Lian doesn't ever need Hua Cheng's protection just tells me you don't care what happens to Xie Lian. Because when you leave that man alone he WILL throw himself on a sword both metaphorically and literally. He's not weak in any sense of the word... well unless you mean weak to his husband’s roguish mischievous charms, then yes. but dang someone needs to put a backpack leash on that old man he keeps walking directly into traffic.

One of my favourite qualities about Hua Cheng is that he is extremely shameless and will flirt and tease and pose pretty and make big do me eyes at his Gege and cause Xie Lians inner monologue to produce a 404 code but it’s so clear that if Xie Lian turned around to him and showed him a flash of ankle he’d explode with the force of ten thousand suns.

the wildest thing about lan wangji is the way he’s immediately enraged at his own feelings for wei wuxian. because we’ve seen wei wuxian fall in love slowly and surely, right? he goes from a quick interest to an oblivious attraction to liking lan wangji then being infatuated after his return to life, then to straight-up loving the guy intensely. we watch him develop his sexual and romantic attraction equally.

but lan wangji’s different. from the very first second he’s desperately smitten — all it took was one sly smile and he was going through the four stages of love: the desire to marry, kiss, bed and die with him. and he’s so goddamn outraged, because how dare this troublemaker trespass into his house and steal his heart so easily??

he was so conflicted that he didn’t see any other alternative if not to unsheathe his sword and fight the hell out of that idiot. feelings?? for a rebellious teenager?? right in front of my clan’s three thousand rules??? not today, devil.

I think part of the reason I’m so obsessed with MXTX’s works is the way that each story seems to hold you gently as say “Your kindness mattered. It didn’t alleviate the suffering, it did not undo the pain. But your kindness mattered.”

Kindness could not erase Luo Binghe’s abuse, but it changed the story into a kinder one.

Kindness did not stop Wei Wuxian’s death, but it did save a-Yuan.

Kindness did not undo Xie Lian’s suffering, but it renewed his sincerity to help others.

Kindness did not change the entire world, but it helped create a softer future.

Its such a nice message, that maybe kindness will not protect you, maybe you don’t see the outcome of it, but you should still try to be kind, and I love that honestly.
