Minecraft Piracy in the Old Days

This was when Alpha was the most up to date version and quality help was still coming from The Pirate Bay. Does anybody remember?

There were some instructions in images and text that said stuff like "you have to <file/folder copying process that I can't remember> so that your worlds save - there is god tier armour that you do not want to lose", and I think one of the downloads even said "often these things say try before you buy, but only the douche pirates say that." Going on to stylistically say how you should download the game and keep using it and not bother about the consequences. Also, if you pirated Minecraft Alpha, you famously at the time could not craft fences.

I’m going to sound insane for a sec but I feel like people are forgetting that casual players of Minecraft exist. The other day I saw someone talk about how no one uses mounts anymore because everyone uses elytra’s and it’s like HUH?? What are you on about bro 😭 wtf are you on about. Getting a horse used to be the biggest deal to me and it still is. Today I got into an argument about how Minecraft isn’t a game about colonialism because unless you choose to play as a colonist than it’s about love. It’s always been about love. No one is forcing you to make villager farms that’s all you man. I am just building a house and enjoying myself

literally like its been my favorite game for 14 years and i still have never beat the ender dragon. I just like building and exploring the world.

I especially love to get a mod that lets me build ships out of normal blocks then explore and sail the seas, then use what ive collected on my voyages to build a cozy home, then maybe eventually seaside town. Use the saplings and flower's collected to landscape the countryside. No farms besides the fields of wheat or carrots. I dont really go into caves often, i just trade the wheat for emeralds and then use the emeralds to get tools from another villager.

the thing is people often talk about how minecraft steve is the most whitewashed character since jesus christ but never does anyone discuss how they’re perhaps the most misgendered character ever

steve (alongside all the other default skins, for that matter) are referred to with they/them and with gender-neutral language by the developers!

i think the most interesting part is that steve (and the others, mostly alex) are constantly misgendered by not just fans, but official minecraft content itself. merch, social media posts, etc will often refer to steve with he/him, and alex with she/her, although sometimes they seem to omit pronouns entirely. the developers, though, have seen them as genderless since basically the beginning

before notch became who he is today, he posted about gender in minecraft, ending it with:

and in an interview with lydia williams, she talks about how she was corrected on steve’s gender (presumably by her coworkers at the time):

and again, in the latest skin-related video, both steve and sunny are referred to solely with they/them. the developers seem pretty set and comfortable with the genderless nature of the player characters, which makes it really confusing as to why the rest of the branding ignores that fact entirely
