Question to ttrpg mutuals and followers: What do you consider to be the essential features of a good OSR-ish hexcrawl generator?
@otterorder Actally I thought of a better way to do this than the one I said in the response to you comment: One could ensure that biome transitions make sense by implementing another hexmap as a biome table like this:
The idea would be that instead of rolling for terrain on a traditional table, the user starts by putting a token somewhere on this map, and then rolls 1d6 to randomly determine what direction to move it in, and whatever terrain it lands on is the terrain of the next hex. This maintain randomness while ensuring that terrain transitions make more sense.
So for example if you were rolling 19 hexes to make a flower hexcrawl and rolled the following path:
The terrain of the hexes would be Grassland - Lake - Grassland - Grassland - Forest - Grassland - Grassland - Beach - Hills - Beach - Cliff - Ocean - Ocean - Beach - Beach - Beach - Jungle - Grassland - Swamp
Which would look like this on the resulting hexcrawl:
Of course the biome map above is just one I quickly put together to demonstrate this idea, and for an actual generator I'd probably spend a lot more time tweaking it. But I think I'm going to go with this idea for terrain generation.
This reminds me of this PWYW thing on drivethru...
But there's something wonky about the dice rolling and the way procedures end up working out, unless I grossly messed something up. But, perhaps you could glean something useful from it.
My thought was something along the lines of... like... rotating the roll key or using a single d6 instead of 2 or something. I have mostly been using Sandbox Generator by Atelier Clandestin when I've been wordbuilding lately, but there's still room for improvement.
I've been using the same sandbox generator! I have my physical copy of it right here in fact :p
A lot of the random generation procedures I've been writing for this project are loosely based on its content (but extensively modified and tinkered with), since I think it's fairly solid procedure-wise, but it definitely has room for improvement as you say.
I'll check out the one you linked too :p
I've been totally consumed by this. I have written more d66 tables in the last week than I can remember off the top of my head, full of spelling mistakes from sleep deprivation, I've written generators from inns to wizard towers to cities to temple complexes, I'm writing a religion generator, I'm a god breaking down adventuring locations to their essential components and building systematic procedures to endlessly reassemble them and recombine them back together. I'm going insane someone put me down.
Finally doing formatting on this and actually writing stuff down as procedures instead of a bunch of loose excel tables lmao
I feel like I went into a fucking life-consuming trance working on this for a few weeks but it's finally done.
Big update! The GM toolkit section of this document is growing so much that i'm considering splitting it off into its own document but I don
Added a hexcrawl creation toolkit to ma pimeja nasa and it's far more compelte than originally intended.
I ended up writing almost 80 random tables for this thing. I'm considering splitting the GM toolkit section into its own document next update once I get the dungeon generator procedure written down but idk. For now I'm just coming down from the high of just how hyeprfixated I got working on this since mid-december

Hey, but don’t fall asleep on this Medieval Fantasy City Generator
Reblogging for the last!
Always reblog Watabou’s generators.
New Status Effects:
Metem Psychosis - Your brush with death has left some ontological wheels out of alignment. Your future lives leak into the present. You are plagued by memories of the people you could be.
Instrained - You have been released from something inexplicable, a fundamental tether swings adrift. Your will -now unfamiliar- seems to grind against your body.
Subgressed - Your connection to the sensorium has snapped, and your experience is relegated to memory and fantasy. Everything is only as you imagine it to be.
Inculpatized - Your identity has been subsumed by the flow of violence moving through history. You are no longer a person, reduced to the automatism of state applied to muscle tissue.
Cloistered - You are a hungry-eyed sarcophagus. Your participation in life has been replaced with infinitely regressing voyeurism. You cannot sleep.
200 Word RPGs 2025
Each November, some people try to write a novel. Others would prefer to do as little writing as possible. For those who wish to challenge their ability to not write, we offer this alternative: producing a complete, playable roleplaying game in two hundred words or fewer.
This is the submission thread for the 2025 event, running from November 1st, 2025 through November 30th, 2025. Submission guidelines can be found in this blog's pinned post, here.
All Sports are about Finding Narratives in RNG
Required: a lot of d6s and some other polyhedral dice. Paper, pencil, erasers.
Optionally: friends eager for sports drama.
Build your League:
League consists of 8-12 teams. Most of them have d6 Scoring, and d6 Defense. Underdog team has d4 in both. The Reigning Champions have d8 in both. Stone Wall d4 Scoring and d10 Defense. Name the teams at the start of the seasons, or as they come up in your schedule.
Off-Season Training:
For each Team, roll both Dice. On result of 1 increase the die size. Decrease the die size on roll of 6+. Record changes, discuss Watsonian explanations, make predictions and speculate.
Conduct Season:
To Score a game: Pick 2 Teams. Roll both team's Scoring Dice, then roll and subtract Defense Dice from opponent's Score. Round negatives to 0, then record Final Scores. Ties earn 1 point towards Championship, Victory 3, Loss 0. After all teams have played same number of games against different teams, end Season.
Run Championship:
Compile Semi-Finals brackets from Top 4 from Teams with most Championship points. Re-roll tied games for Championship bracket. Title game is best of three.
Repeat?
I know that Peter’s Jackson Lord of the Rings trilogy technically has flaws but also….it doesn’t. It’s perfect.
‘Are these magic cloaks?’ asked Pippin, looking at them. with wonder.
‘I do not know what you mean by that,’ answered the leader of the Elves. ‘They are fair garments, and the web is good, for it was made in this land. They are Elvish robes certainly, if that is what you mean. Leaf and branch, water and stone: they have the hue and beauty of all these things under the twilight of Lorien that we love; for we put the thought of all that we love into all that we make.”
- Fellowship of the Ring, Chapter 8: Farewell to Lorien
This is how I think of Jackson’s movies. Yes, there are serious flaws - Gandalf’s de-powering, Gimli as comic relief, and Faramir, namely - but come on.
Remember when the guys making their chain mail invented a new method for quickly producing large amounts of it by hand? Remember Miranda Otto walking down the street, practicing sword positions? The guys who forged all of the swords - for leads and for extras? The men and women riders who volunteered to be riders of Rohan? The costume designers who designed the inside of Theoden’s armor (which no one would ever see) so beautifully that Bernard Hill said he felt like a king? The friendships between the cast, and their size doubles, and the stuntmen?
When they made that movie, they put all that they loved into all that they made.
#just hundreds of people who went ‘sure let me try this’ #and they made something breathtaking #and then they made it 12 more times in different sizes ( @byjoveimbeinghumble )
Wait tell me more about that chainmail thing
“Kaynemaile has worked tirelessly to perfect the material science behind beautiful architectural mesh, collaborating with architects and designers on projects that embolden urban environments with positive buildings. The company’s patented polycarbonate mesh, inspired by 2,000-year-old medieval chainmail, was initially created for the armor and weapons seen in the The Lord of The Rings movie trilogy and is now used on major architectural projects around the world.
“The film’s art director and Kaynemaile’s founder Kayne Horsham worked with his team to construct each garment from plastic plumbing tubes, coating them in pure silver. Once filming wrapped, Horsham dedicated himself to creating a change to the liquid state assembly process to mass produce the polycarbonate chainmail for architectural applications — products that were light, but strong enough to protect the interior or exterior of a building. Now an industry-leading manufacturer, Kaynemaile produces mesh for everything from small interior screens to large scale exterior façades. Their mesh is easy to install and can be custom created for specialized applications.”

Kaynemaile's patented mesh façade systems are incredibly lightweight and easy to install while bringing a bold look to any scale building.
YOU GUYS
they took forced perspective and scaled sets to a new level by adding moving set pieces to create the illusion that the hobbits and dwarves were much smaller than everyone else even when the camera moved.
every scene you see in the 11+ hours of glory that is the LOTR masterpiece is most like ridiculously elaborate or expensive–from model towers to the all-new motion capture technology used for gollum to the costumes and sets to the aerial on location shots of mother-fracking new zealand and the big impressive battle scenes and horse charges.
but then the story and the screenplay too–there is just SO much lore that is there in the background lurking if you want to look for it, yet it still remains simplified for the average viewer. Crazy impressive feat.
And the acting is heartfelt and real and makes you love the characters.
ALSO DON’T GET ME STARTED ON FREAKING HOWARD SHORE AND HIS 100+ HEARTSHATTERINGLY BEAUTIFUL LIETMOTIFS AND BRILLIANT SUBTLE VARIATIONS IN THE FLIPPING 13 HOUR SOUNDTRACK. AND ENYA SINGING IN REAL ELVISH.
There’s so much detail in the costuming that we can’t even see, it’s wild. One of my favourite things I saw on a tour of the WETA collection was seeing a Gondorian sword and on the pommel of the grip, there were concentric rings with a triangle wedge raised about them. They had a representation of frigging Minas Tirith as a part of the sword.
Also, here are a few close-up costume/prop details from the costumes they had on display in the shop and at sites around Wellington:
All of this really shows you why no other Fantasy movie took hold in the wake of Jackson’s LotR. Everything afterwards was trying to cash in on its success and so couldn’t be made with the same kind of love because love was no longer the goal. The goal was profit and that master requires a frugality that is anathema to love.
New Friends at the Table season Perpetua has decided to put itself directly in my wheelhouse. Here's Elena and Veile!
This is CLASSIC flegg behavior!
Put an opera in your campaign!
Put an opera in your TTRPG and make a reason why the player characters MUST attend. There are many reasons to do this!
It's fancy so the PCs have to come up with formal wear that their characters would bring to the opera (this is one reason it should be an opera). Let them wear whatever weird shit they want so long as their character LEGITIMATELY believes the outfit is appropriate. Let them get Met Gala with it. Other guests may stare and make snide remarks, but the staff should only offer token resistance if the outfit interferes with the performance or audience, or is dangerous to the people around them.
It forces the PCs into a social situation they may not have the mechanical skills for. Fish out of water stories are lots of fun, especially during the intermission when they have a chance to mingle with the NPCs. Make part of their task at the opera to get to know the wealthy folks in the audience, either generally or specific ones. Even better if they have to get *something* from them (political support, a specific item, information, etc). If things seem to be stalling, here are two tricks to help keep things flowing: a) have someone powerful pointedly insult the most hot headed PC in a very upper class manner. Comments about their outfit and upbringing are classics. This heats things back up as the hot head tries to get violent while the other PCs try to keep the peace, and can lead to a duel the next morning when the dilettante turns out to be a renowned duelist. b) once things have completely stalled or if you need to cut things short (in or out of character), have the intermission end and the audience called back into the auditorium. This can be used as a cliffhanger for whatever was about to happen!
The opera house can be a very interesting location! There's the lobby, auditorium, and possibly concessions, but if the PCs start going where they shouldn't, there's a lot of behind (and under) the scenes spaces for them to explore. Do they go to the changing room and harass (or even replace!) the actors? Maybe they go to the props department and replace a stage knife with a real one! There could be a weirdo living in the basement who is obsessed with the lead actress and plans to kidnap (or rescue?) her. There are all kinds of interesting spaces for plots to happen!
The opera itself is an opportunity to tell the players about the past, present, or even future! What is the plot of the opera? This is key information! The opera will be telling a story that is important to the majority of the audience. It could be about the past of the nation (mythical or historical). Maybe it's about events the PCs witnessed themselves but told from a different point of view than theirs and this might be unflattering towards them or those they care about. You can even foreshadow future plot points by having the play be a fiction that thematically or narratively parallels later parts (or even the next) of the story arc. If there's a great evil that's going to return, you can combine the past AND the future by describing the terrors of the "defeated" evil, then later show those signs happening as hints that the evil returns!
There are some great examples of how an opera (or play if you must) can be inserted into a story to great effect. The Ember Island Players episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender recaps the entire show from the perspective of the antagonist Fire Nation.
Final Fantasy 6 has a famous opera scene where one of the heroes has to replace an actress who has been threatened with being kidnapped by the mysterious man whose help they need! The hero must then remember her lines while the rest of the party protects the show from getting derailed by monsters.
These are just a few ways that you can use an opera in your TTRPG campaign and I highly recommend giving it a whirl!
D&D Character Classes by Jeff Easley Dungeons and Dragons Basic Rules
Like, I'd be lying if I said I was into fucked up yuri RPGs purely for the game mechanics, but it's unavoidably true that Tumblr lesbians as a demographic are doing some of the most innovative rules design the tabletop roleplaying hobby has seen in years. That this often means we're getting fucked up yuri and novel ways to abuse big stupid dice tables in one convenient package is more of a fun bonus.
show me the fucked up yuri rpgs please
What, all of them? That's a very tall order!
(Seriously, though, it's a pretty broad genre. I have to confess a certain bias toward dungeon crawlers, so my reading list is mostly going to consist of stuff like Songbirds, Doll.Bod, @cavegirlpoems' Dungeon Bitches, etc. – just to cite a few I've perused recently – though I'm also a sucker for a good genre emulation piece, like @open-sketchbook's Double or Nothing or @sarahcarapace's forthcoming Violet Core.)
For good measure (and also on the non-dungeon crawling side of things) I'd like to add @kkdreamboat's Crooked Mile, the highly underrated mind bending liminal horror Dungeon Bitches supplement about being a queer 1990's punk band on the road in the rustbelt and Velvet Glove by Sarah Doom, the 70s girl-gang game that is a wonderful, kinda distressingly good game. There are so many cool sapphic leaning rpg writers and games out there!
hey that's my game! i dun did make doll.bod!
but also I'd be remiss if I didn't mention @darlingdemoneclipse's Biotrophication, Sapphicworld, and We Live Forever (and We Love To Live) (made alongside the unfroggetable @i-feel-odd)
There's also @blujayh's Euphoria 2180!
I love Hulkenberg.
You'd think the former knight commander to royalty would be the most reserved person in the party. But no. She loves pop. She thinks bugs she found off the ground are free snacks. Her training regimen involves crawling around on all 4's (ideal for finding bugs on ground.)
I don't think I shared these here! I made some proxies with my bg3 portraits and I really like how they turned out
one of my favourite new upcoming GL manga rn, love bullet, about girls who get reincarnated as cupids except they've modernized and now they use guns instead of bows.... silly sounding premise but the visual direction is extremely striking and its been super emotionally impactful to me so far at just 7 chapters out. check out the fan translation on mangadex/dynastyscans and if you like it please buy a copy of it for 5 dollars (guide on how to buy it below) cause the sales are struggling and if it gets cancelled ill die badly,,, thank you
