naomi misora's function as a plot device is very important to death note for many reasons:

closest call light has had up to this point. extremely suspenseful episode/chapters

it was hinted at with light staring raye down in the subway but naomi's death drives in how much light loves telling people he's kira right before they die which is a critical character trait right up to the end

furthers the themes of suicide and suicidal ideation that death note so loves

first (only?) person to call light and L similar out loud to light's face

first person to have a direct connection to and grief for one of kira's victims. light and L's points of view are extremely narrowed in on the game and naomi forces the world to widen and show that the mass murder has actual impact on real people caught up in their wake

first person light has to use significant social manipulation on - i'm not counting yuri because she wasn't the component on which his spaceland plan rested. demonstrates for the first time the extent of light's ability to mask as boy-next-door

most sympathetic victim yet. was even less of a direct threat to light's life than raye was, plus she's acting out of grief for her fiance. demonstrates for the first time the extent of light's cruelty

i also think naomi is a fantastic character in and of herself but she is a critical part of death note's arc as well imo. her existence might not contribute much to the logical deduction side of the plot progression (though her disappearance is the final straw that gets the task force + L to focus on the people raye penber was stalking) but is so so important for the development of our protagonist and the establishment of the world around him that taking her out would not only remove one of the most iconic scenes in manga/anime but also destroy a HUGE amount of the subtler thematic and character work.

you know i feel like we don't appreciate misa's tapes enough. that was art. she copied L's font and she spoke into a recorder and scrambled her voice deep and i was legit convinced it was light before the manga revealed that this was her entrance. misa is so so so good at writing and performing scripts

remember in the second arc when she threatened soichiro over the phone and she was using a text-to-speech program so she couldn't mess up typing even once and she wasn't working off a pre-written script either she fucking improvised that shit

like i think we forget that this was all her. she did it on light's orders but this is a misa speech and it sounds exactly how you'd expect kira to sound. can we get her some applause

As I have been researching stuff for that "queerness as a shorthand for moral failing in Death Note" essay, I have fallen into a couple of rabbit holes.

One of the more interesting ones is the tie between sweets and queerness. From what I have read, sweets are seen as the domain of women and young children while spice and alcohol are seen as the domain of men. This is the reason why it was (and still is) such a common trope for straight ML to dislike sweets. Likewise, this is also the reason why the imagery of sweets is so common in queer works as a whole. For there still seems to be this perception of feminity = queerness.

So the choice to depict both L and Mello with sweets, seems to carry this connotation of being feminine/unmasculine, which could then be seen as queerness. The obvious rebutal to this is that the sweets are actually there to symbolize their childishness. While I do think this is a valid point, there is also the need to consider that there are other characters in the series who are described/seen as childish, but are not as consistently depicted with sweets. Mainly Light and Near come to mind.

There is definetly more to be said on this topic, but I'll leave that for the big essay.
