Prairies are some of the most endangered ecosystems in the world, with the tallgrass prairie being the most endangered. Only 1-4% of tallgrass prairie still exists. Prairies are critically important, not only for the unique biodiversity they possess, but for their effect on climate. The ability to store carbon is a valuable ecological service in todayâs changing climate. Carbon, which is emitted both naturally and by human activities such as burning coal to create electricity, is a greenhouse gas that is increasing in the Earthâs atmosphere. Reports from the International Panel on Climate Change, a group of more than 2,000 climate scientists from around the world, agree that increased greenhouse gases are causing climate change, which is leading to sea level rise, higher temperatures, and altered rain patterns. Most of the prairieâs carbon sequestration happens below ground, where prairie roots can dig into the soil to depths up to 15 feet and more. Prairies can store much more carbon below ground than a forest can store above ground. In fact, the prairie was once the largest carbon sink in the world-much bigger than the Amazon rainforest-and its destruction has had devastating effects.

I just have to addâthat extensive root system? Itâs not just how the plant eats, and how it keeps itself from getting pulled out of the ground during storms, or dying when its aboveground portion is eaten⌠itâs how it talks to its friends and family, how it shares food with its friends and family, and more than likely, how it thinks. Thatâs a whole plant brain weâve domesticated away, leaving a helpless organism that has trouble figuring out when itâs under attack by pests, what to do about it, has very little in the way of chemical defense so it can do something about it, and canât even warn its neighbors. Even apart from the ecological concerns, what weâve done is honestly pretty cruel.
Also, isnât this part of what led to the Dust Bowl? Which, you know, with our climate turning the way it is going lately, seems like something we should be a little worried about happening again.
Guys, as a 15 year old that deeply cares for the environment and our future- this is so important. You know that rule, make it nicer than when you found it?
Some tasks/routines I should start using!

Alright
I want to talk about how cryptozoology is often toxic for Natives interested in it. I personally love cryptozoology, but I'm often uncomfortable while going through it because of how much content with w*ndigo, sk*nwalkers, or thunderbirds in it. So I can't stress enough to those involved in cryptozoology, please stop adding these spirits in with cryptids. Mothman, Jersey Devil, Nessie are all cryptids, but not Native spirits.

Autism & cutting off in conversations.
I seen a lot of people here and there reblog posts like âIf you see someone being interrupted donât let it happen just put the person in their placeâ. This kind of scares me and other people I know who have autism. We literally have a hard time reading the context and telling when someone is finished speaking or just paused. This is especially a problem in group settings where we accidentally cut people off a lot thinking they were finished.Â
Of course we stop once we realize they werenât finished. Often we go to the extremes where by the end of the conversation we ended up never getting a chance to speak in fear of cutting someone off or we accidentally cut someone off because of a misread pause. This is a great source of anxiety because either we leave never having said a word never sure if we could speak or we are seen as rude for accidentally misreading the situation.
So if a person with autism cuts someone off⌠just maybe try to help them out instead of lecturing them on their terrible social skills. Give signs to show when you are willing to âpass the microphoneâ per say (even just for comments/relating about the story). That or at least donât lecture them or give them a mean look to make them feel like a bad person for misreading the situation. You can say like âOh I wasnât done Iâll open up the floor for comments with a nodâ or something lol. It sounds silly but literally canât even tell the difference between a pause and an end.
What Does Executive Dysfunction Look Like?
Here, while focused and not overstimulated, I asked The Kid to draw an apple and spell it:
He is able to write the word apple all by himself, from memory. He knows how to spell apple, and he knows that he knows. He needs a simple visual aid to draw an apple himself, his apple resembles an apple (as drawn by a 6 yo, anyway).
Here, while slightly overstimulated, I ask The Kid to draw a cat and write the word cat:
Though he definitely knows how to spell cat, he needs a visual aid here to do so. He also needs a simple visual aid to draw a cat, but even with an aid, he draws the parts in the wrong order. You can tell he's struggling to perform the task.
Here, absolutely overstimulated, I ask The Kid to draw a whale and write the word whale:
After 3 minutes of picking up the pencil and then putting it down again, with lots of echolalia, he makes an attempt. He needs a visual aid for both tasks. While he writes each letter in the correct order, their sequence is mostly random. He cannot draw at all in this state.
This is Executive Dysfunction. A symptom common in autism, and adhd.
A person with Executive Dysfunction is not making a decision not to do something (chores, homework, cooking, etc.) -- they genuinely cannot do the thing. At least not under certain circumstances, such as overstimulation or stress. They might require help and step by step guidance to get through it, or to abandon the task entirely until circumstances are more ideal.
This is a normal experience and not something to be punished for (by yourself or others). In fact punishment or the fear of punishment actually makes ED worse and more frequent. The only things that actually help the severity and frequency of Executive Dysfunction is patience and understanding.
This is also why functioning labels are outdated and inaccurate. You can go from 1 to 3 in the same day. Heck, the same hour if you're having A Time of It. For example, I go straight from 1 to 3, skipping 2 entirely when I look at road maps.
(Obligatory disclaimer: The Kid was not compelled to perform these tasks against his desire. I compiled these images over the course of summer break, when he requested the activity but wasn't always in a state to complete the activity. Then realized what a keen visual representation of ED this was, and that it could be helpful.)
