One of the saddest parts of the Hunger Games prequels was seeing the ghost of a community Katniss could have had if the circumstances were different. The girl who carried so much loyalty, kindness, and goodwill towards people could have had friends, loving aunts and uncles, a large extended family. But we meet her in the first book and she's so lonely. She remembers the songs that her family once sung but doesn't know their names. Her late father's best friend is the town's drunk. The fiddle player she only remarks about in passing knows her grief like no one else does. she's so alone and didn't have to be.

what if you were POOR and then you got a GIRLFRIEND who was always SINGING and then she DUMPED YOU and then you got elected PRESIDENT and then some district 12 rando ALSO HAD A GIRLFRIEND THAT SINGS and then he tries to BLOW UP YOUR CHILD DEATH ARENA and then ANOTHER district 12 rando can SING AND BLOWS UP YOUR CHILD DEATH ARENA and then she doesn’t SHOOT YOU but you still DIED

The (un-fucking-hinged) conversation that Snow had with Haymitch REALLY puts Peeta’s hijacking (SPECIFICALLY against Katniss) into perspective. Snow could have hijacked him to hate the rebellion, or district 12 or even himself. But no, that old loser just HAD to finally prove to one of those district 12 boys that their girl didn’t really love them, JUST like his didn’t really love him. Was it a smart move to potentially have Peeta attack Katniss on sight? Yes. But more importantly, it allowed Snow to control Peeta in a way that let him live out his own fantasies about being unloved and having power over his girl.
