Here you are. Waiting on your appointment to be on “Say Yes to the Dress,” to say you were extremely nervous would be quiet the understatement. You were accompanied by your soon-to-be husbands mother and father, Johnny, Robby, and Shannon.

You were feeling the insidious fingers of cold feet creeping upon you until Robby looks at you and asks, “you alright, sis?”

You weren’t sure how to answer that. You couldn’t find the words, Hell, you could barely breathe. You just slightly nod feigning a smile so Robby doesn’t worry too much about you.

“You don’t have to do this, you know?”

You sigh, “I do. I’m just nervous.”

Robby gives you a worried look and rests his hand on your shoulder for comfort as you start to unbuckle your seatbelt.

“Alrighty, kids! Let’s do this! You ready bride-to-be?” Johnny exclaims.

Johnnys excitement helps you gain a smidge of confidence. You never really had much confidence in yourself practically your entire life. Robby was more the outgoing one you’d say. He joined karate and is actually really good at it and he’s good at skateboarding and you were just there. You tried karate but you weren’t good at it at all.

“Yes, I’m ready!”

You all get out of the car and enter the building an employee welcomes you with a bright smile and asks for your full name and phone number to match up the appointment that you had made. As she notifies the associate that will be assisting you walk around and see the different dresses hanging on display. You see the associate approach you with a couple of camera men as you all start to smile for the cameras.

“Hey there! You must be Y/N?” The associate reaches out to shake your hand.

You shake her hand, “Yes ma’am!”

“Wonderful! And who did you bring with you today?”

You tell the associate who you brought with you.

She smiles, “that’s great! Now, what type of dress are we looking for today?”

“Nothing that shows too much skin!” Johnny butts in warranting a small laugh from everyone.

“Okay, full coverage?” the associate looks at you before making the mental note.

“Well, not necessarily full coverage. But I want to look classy,” you answer.

“Alright, classic. Anything else?”

You continue to explain what type of dress you were looking for.

“Awesome. So, when’s the wedding?”

“Next April.”

“Oh my, a Spring wedding! How gorgeous!”

“Thank you,” you smile.

“And, what’s the budget?”

You tell her your budget and you can tell the associate is going through all the dresses that she can in her head, “great! You ready to get started?”

“We are so ready!” Johnny says happily.

The associate brings you all back to a few racks to take a look at some dresses. Everyone takes their pick; and you and the associate head on back to the dressing room with dresses on hand. You were practically forcing yourself to stop from shaking from pure nerves and pretending that the perspiration on your upper lip didn’t exist. You didn’t want to look bad for the cameras but you are starting to think you signed up for more than you had bargained for. It was time to try on the first dress.

You get the dress on and the classic white dress did hug your curves very well, the sweet heart neckline may have dipped a tad too low, and the dip in the back was a tad to big for your liking but it doesn’t hurt to widen your horizons. The neckline was adorned with a few rhinestones and the train wasn’t too long or too short. The skirt felt like actual silk with lace laying over the top making the mermaid style become on of your top contenders.

“How do you feel, dear?”

You smile and decide to be honest. This is YOUR dress after all, “It’s beautiful! But I’m not sure if it’s for me. I just.. I don’t feel like me in this.”

“Okay, that’s fine. You have plenty more to try on. Wanna go show the family?”

You nod and make your way out to show them. As you walk out everyone “ooh’s” and “aww’s” at you besides Johnny.

You step up on the small podium and take in everyone’s reaction, especially Johnny’s.

“Well family, what do we think?”

Everyone exclaims how beautiful you look and how the dress fits just right on you. Everyone had something to say besides Johnny which caught your attention.

“Dad?” You ask.

Johnny leans up on the couch and places his elbows on his knees and rests his chin in his hand, “I’ll be honest with you but this dress is slutty.”

“Dad!”

“No. I’m serious. It showing way too much! You bend over and you may pop out!” Johnny says pointing at your breasts.

“Ah! Dad! Gross!” Robby says.

“What? That’s just the truth!”

You take your Dads words into consideration and look back in the mirror realizing that maybe it did show too much. He was right. This dress wasn’t what you were looking for at all.

“Well, Y/N, it’s up to you. How do you feel?”

“I agree with Dad. Let’s try another one.”

The next dress you try on was ruffle overkill! You liked to subtle sparkle to each layer and the straight neckline didn’t show too much skin. It showed just enough. You didn’t actually hate this dress.

You step back on the podium and you could tell that this was Shannon’s pick. Her eyes were beaming at you with adoration.

“I love it!” She exclaims.

Johnny disagrees, “Well I hate it!”

“Excuse me?”

“C’mon! She looks a giant cupcake! It’s ridiculous!” Johnny chuckles.

“She does not!”

“Does too!”

“Dad! Mom!” You yell and then immediately lower your voice, “stop.”

“I think you look gorgeous, honey.” You mother-in-law says and you smile at her.

“You do. You look great,” Robby says.

“Thanks, bro.”

You hear Johnny mumble, “that dress is hideous, Jesus.”

You roll your eyes and turn back to the mirror suddenly seeing Johnny’s point. Maybe this dress was TOO much. It was big, hard to navigate in, and maybe, just maybe you did resemble a cupcake.

“I need to try another one on please,” you look at the associate with sad eyes.

The next dress you try on was incredibly form fitting. You were sure Robby had picked this one just for a confidence boost. He was always pushing you to do things you didn’t always agree with. He knew you’d never pick a dress like this but he wanted you to be able to try new things and not be afraid of them. There are buttons lining the entire back side of the dress, long lace sleeves, and a lace non-see through lace on the corset. The dress was absolutely incredible but.. you weren’t sure.

As you step up on the podium you can practically see smoke from the gears turning in your dads head. He was going to take this dress and light it on fire if he could.

“You look WONDERFUL! BEAUTIFUL! A work of art!” Robby exclaims.

“Sure she does!” Johnny scoffs, “For a fricken porno!”

“Ugh, dad,” you say with annoyance.

“What? Do you want me to lie?”

“You’re just saying that because I’m your daughter.”

“Honey, this dress is completely too tight on you. It doesn’t look good.”

“I think it fits her perfectly,” the in-laws both disagree.

As you look in the mirror you see that the dress is too tight. You could barely breathe in it. You were starting to lose hope and fast. You start to feel tears well up in your eyes.

“Guys.. I really don’t know—“ you quietly sob.

Johnny stands up and comes to comfort you, “don’t know what, honey?”

“I don’t know what I want,” you shrug your shoulders as a tear falls. The associate approaches and lightly rubs your back as an extra hand for support.

“Well, let’s take babysteps,” Johnny softly speaks, “you said you wanted something classic.”

You nod.

“Not showing too much skin,” Robby adds.

“Not too tight,” Shannon says.

“And not something that makes you look like a walking cupcake,” the in-laws say holding back a chuckle which causes you to chuckle at them.

“Yeah, definitely want to avoid that.”

You see the associates eyes light up with an idea, “I may have the perfect dress for you.”

You wait in the dressing room for her to return and you can feel the nerves creeping back up again. You didn’t have time to think for a little while until now. You weren’t sure what type of dress that she would walk in with. What if you hated it? Or even worse.. what if your dad hated it? You couldn’t believe how catty he was acting about dresses. You were sure that he wouldn’t care at all about what dress you picked. But now you’re thinking that he may care more than you about it!

You hear a quiet knock on the door as the door creaks open you see the most beautiful dress you’ve ever seen in your life. You walk up and start touching the dress feeling the material and looking at all the lace and subtle glitter on the skirt and train. The style was more flowy and bohemian style with zero ruffles, just like how your Dad wanted.

Wow, this has got to be THE dress for you. You couldn’t wait to get it on to show everyone.

Once the dress was on you glance in the mirror and you couldn’t stop the big smile from forming on your face. You were enamored with this dress. You felt tears of happiness start to drop down your cheeks.

“This.. this dress is..” you couldn’t find the words.

“Perfect.” The associate steps behind you and places her hands on your shoulders and smiles.

“Yeah. Perfect.”

“You ready to show them?”

“Beyond ready!”

As you were walking down the hall you’ve never felt more beautiful or more like yourself. This dress completed you. The dress was yours and nobody would take that away from you. As you walk out everyone’s jaw is slack. Even Johnny’s.

You step up on the podium for one last time and face everyone, “so? What do we think?”

Robby is the first to speak, “this dress is the dress. This is it.”

Shannon starts to cry a little, “you are so beautiful, baby. I’ve never seen a woman look so gorgeous before.”

“Oh Mom, c’mon..” you start to blush.

“Honey, you’ve never looked better. That dress is to a T perfect for you,” the in-laws agree.

You thank them with a huge smile and slowly move your eyes to your Dad. You could tell he was holding back tears and his face was slightly red from struggling not to cry. He couldn’t believe his baby girl was getting married and was gonna get married the most beautiful dress he’s ever seen in his life.

“Dad?” You ask more confidently this time.

“You look stunning,” Johnny tries not to sob in the middle of the fitting room floor. Or especially on TV, how embarrassing would that be?

“Wanna try the veil?”

You nod excitedly.

As she places the veil on your head you felt like a princess. You’ve never felt this happy or excited in your entire life. You felt so beautiful. You couldn’t stop the tears from coming.

“This is perfect!”

The associate smiles and clasps her hands together, “So, Y/N, are we saying Yes to the Dress?”

You turn and look at your family and exclaim, “I’m saying YES to the Dress!”

Everyone claps and runs up to gently hug you making sure not hurt the dress.

After setting another appointment for alterations and everything you all say your goodbyes to the staff and camera men and head outside.

Robby runs up and hugs you, “You found your dress!!! I’m so happy for you!”

You laugh happily all the way back to the cars and say your goodbyes to in-laws after sharing a celebratory hug. You talk to Shannon for a little bit and hug her goodbye.

You go up and talk to your dad, “You really liked the dress?”

“I didn’t like it,” Johnny deadpans causing your heart to drop to the ground, “I loved it!”

You breathe a sigh of relief, “Thank God!”

“You looked absolutely perfect in that dress, babygirl! You will make the most beautiful bride.”

You hug Johnny with a big smile.

You realize that you had nothing to be worried about; because you found the perfect fit.

The night was cold. Freezing to be exact. Your fingers were numb and you could see your breath with every exhale. You started to quicken your pace as the wind started to pick up. It was starting to flurry snow and you could tell that it was going to start sleeting soon.

You didn’t live too far away from your job but on nights like this it felt like miles. You didn’t have enough money for a cab since it was a slow night at the cafe but you still chose to go home early tonight.

As you were walking you couldn’t help but think about your shift, specifically a customer you had. A thin brunette man who stayed most of the evening. He was charming but awkward; funny but erratic in some ways. You weren’t sure if it was too much caffeine that he had consumed after his four cups of coffee, the total of creams and sugars running through his system, or the copious amounts of nicotine that he had smoked; but he always greeted you with wide eyes, blown pupils, and a slightly goofy lopsided grin with every word you spoke to him.

“More coffee?”

He looks up at you with a cigarette in hand and a small smile, “Yes, please.”

You couldn’t help but smile back at him, “Of course,” you pour more coffee in his cup.

“Thank you, sweetheart,” your heart jumped when he said this.

It had been a few hours of him sitting in the cafe looking through a scrapbook of what you were assuming was pictures that he had taken.

It was dead so you decided to ask, “It’s none of my business but what are you looking at?”

He slightly scoffs, “Oh, this?” He looks down and points at the book with a shaky hand that was opened on a page with a picture of a middle aged man, smiling, walking to his car, “it’s work.”

“You keep your work in a scrapbook?”

He looks back up at you, “Yeah. Just the ones I like. The ones with mystery.”

You shake your head letting him know that you understand what he was talking about, “Huh, that’s cool! Kinda like a detective?”

Looking back down at his scrapbook he chuckles and shrugs his shoulders, “Sure, something like that.”

You smile again at him, “Sure, do you need anymore cream or sugar?”

“Sugar, please.”

You reach in your pocket and hand him a few packets of sugar, “So, you’ve been here for a bit,” he looks back up at you with slight anticipation, “what’s your name?”

You could tell that he was struggling with something to say to you or maybe he was contemplating on if he wanted to smile at you or take another drag of his cigarette but he finally settles on, “Adam.”

“Well, hello Adam!” You say sounding embarrassingly excited.

This time he smiles and almost laughs, “Hello.. uh.. Y/N.”

“Nice to meet you, honey. Let me know if you need anything else,” you gave him your award winning smile.

He reciprocates, “Thanks.”

You approach the door at your apartment building and unlock the door. You walk inside and close the door letting out a breath already starting to warm up. You decided to take a warm shower and make something small to eat. You couldn’t help but think about him again. Your thoughts becoming consumed by him. You wondered if he would show up again and when? You got excited about the thought of seeing his smile and hearing his voice.

As you’re on your way back to work the following evening your thoughts are still crowded with memories of him. The sunset painted the sky with pink and purple watercolors. You always loved a pretty sunset after a snow which is why you chose to walk to work again.

You still wondered if he would come by and hang around for most of your shift again. The roads were covered in ice and a light layer of snow; you had a feeling it would be another dead shift. Cold snowy nights like this never brought in anybody because most sane people wanted to stay home in the warmth.

You arrive and clock in and you are greeted to one table. The shift was boring. You even had time to eat some dinner and a piece of pie while balancing your nonexistent tables. You were cleaning the front counter when you see him approach the front door. You feel your heartbeat quicken and you begin to develop a head rush. You thought about how ridiculous you are being! You have a crush! You walk back behind the counter and keep cleaning trying to act nonchalant as he approaches one of the seats right in front of you.

“Hey! Welcome in,” you greet Adam, “back so soon?”

“Yes, I couldn’t get enough of that delicious coffee,” Adam takes a seat and lights up a cigarette.

You chuckle, “I’m guessing you’re wanting some more coffee, huh?”

“Please,” he says with a small smile.

“Cream? Sugar?”

“Read my mind.”

You pour him a cup, “So, you don’t have your scrapbook tonight?”

“No. I didn’t bring it. I needed to escape from the chaos tonight,” he shrugs.

You put the cup and the sugars and creams in front of him and slightly lean on the counter, “Understandable. It certainly is peaceful in here tonight.”

Adam takes another drag of his cigarette, “No kidding.”

“Yeah, I’d rather it be busy it makes the time go by faster plus I get more money.”

Adam leans more on the counter as well with a slight smirk, “but then you wouldn’t be able to talk to me.”

You two are practically centimeters apart and you didn’t know what to say. All of the breath, thoughts, and words have left your body. All you were left with was the sound of your heartbeat and the smell of Adam’s cigarette smoke.

Adam’s eyes slowly lower down taking in every aspect of you as he leans back in his seat and takes a sip of his coffee.

“So, Y/N, what’s your hobbies?” his voice laced with less intensity, “you know mine.”

You start to shake off your nerves, “Nothing really. I work and come home and sleep,” you laugh, “is sleeping a hobby?”

Adam chuckles, “not really, but it can be.”

You two share a laugh and you decide to pour yourself some coffee as well, “can I bum a smoke?”

Adam raises an eyebrow, “you smoke?”

“Yeah, on occasion, I’m not proud of it.”

Adam hands you a cigarette and you place it inbetween your lips, “C’mere,” you lean down and Adam lights your cigarette for you.

“Thanks.”

Adam smiles, “Don’t mention it.”

“Okay, so, you got a girlfriend? Or… boyfriend?”

“Ha! No. No girlfriend,” Adam smiles, “or boyfriend.”

You nod and take another puff, “good,” you exhale.

“And you?”

“Dude I literally said that sleeping was a hobby so,” you shrug.

You put out your cigarette as a few more people walk in and sit down at a table, “duty calls,” you saunter away from Adam. You felt his eyes practically looking right through you and you smile to yourself with satisfaction.

As you were helping your other table you see Adam get up, leave a tip, and write something down on a napkin in your peripheral vision. You were so focused on him that you practically missed everyone’s order at the table. You get their orders and walk back behind the counter to read his note.

“Sorry I had to dip. I’ll see you tomorrow night.”

Tomorrow night? He’s going to come back again? Oh gosh, you’ll so have to fix your hair tomorrow!

The next evening rolls around and you are back on your way to work for another graveyard shift. You had bought yourself another pack of cigarettes, ugh, damn you Adam. You clock in and do the usual cleaning and preparations for the night. Dead, as usual. Sometimes you wondered how this place stayed open especially during the winter nights.

You decided to step outside to have a smoke while you waited for someone to come in. That’s when you see him. Slowly approaching the front doors with a cigarette and scrapbook in hand.

“Howdy stranger,” you greet, “got your scrapbook tonight, I see.”

“Hey, yeah, I decided to bring it with me to look at while you were with your other tables.”

You feel a slight blush creep up on your face, “Cute. Want some coffee?”

“Lead the way!”

He opens the door for you and you walk back into the practically abandoned cafe and he takes a seat while you pour you and him coffee.

“Ya know, I’m growing pretty fond of our little coffee dates,” he says with a smile.

You felt your blush grow deeper, “Dates?”

“Want some pie?”

You shake your head, “Nice switch of topic there. And yes I’d love to have some pie.”

You put a slice of pie on a plate and scoot it towards him. You hand him a fork and his fingers softly brush yours. Even though they were cold it still filled you with warmth and you felt at this point that you were going to melt. The smell of coffee and nicotine becoming a drug to you. You just couldn’t get enough of him. You walk back around the counter and take a seat beside him. You two were close, almost brushing shoulders. God, how bad you wanted him to touch you. You wanted to feel his lips against yours, his tongue in your mouth, him pinning your arms behind your head against the wall as you practically gasp for air. Fuck, you wanted him.

You interrupt your thoughts, “So this is a date, huh?”

Adam lights another cigarette, “I’d hope so.”

You smile trying your absolute best to avoid the blush that was on your face but he couldn’t avoid it. He just kept looking at you with a smirk on his face.

You two sat there in the peaceful silence for a bit and enjoyed your coffee and pie, even though Adam chose his cigarette over food. You two would steal glances at each other every now and then for some reason you couldn’t find any words to say and neither could he.

As you look back at him he puts his hand on your cheek and asks, “is this okay?”

“Yes,” is all you could mutter.

You both lean in and finally connect lips. You felt like all the planets had aligned and all the stars had blew up at the same time. You place your hands atop his shoulders for stability making sure that you don’t fall over or you felt like you might start floating. The taste of him was intoxicating, exactly what you thought. He smelled of cheap aftershave and smoke and you wanted more of it. You couldn’t get enough of it. All you wanted was him and only him in this moment.

His shaky hand takes hold of yours as you two deepen the kiss and all you could think about in this moment was how he would touch you, feel you, and savor you.

If only this moment could last forever. Until the bell on top of door rings and you two quickly separate.

You had forgotten that you were at work.

“Holy shit, I really hope the kitchen doesn’t tell on me for that.”

“Yeah, wow, I’m so sorry.”

You hastily stand up and say, “Don’t be sorry. Thank you.”

Adam laughs and you walk away before he can say anything else; grabbing your notepad to go take your new tables order. After you take their order and hand it in to the kitchen he’s gone. Leaving a tip and another note.

“Stellar date. Hope we can do it again sometime. I’ll see you soon.”

Your heartbeat quickens but also you feel a twinge of sadness. You wondered why he wouldn’t give you a proper goodbye… but some people just weren’t that good with goodbyes you had guessed.

Either way you would have to wait for tomorrow to see if he’d show up again.

You counted the minutes until tomorrow evening and here you were.

Finally at work.

You never thought you’d be excited to go to work but here you were. You were wiping down the counter when you heard the bell ring, the door swing open, and you see him. He looks at you with his cigarette in hand and he smiles at you.

“Adam!”

“Hey there,” he exhales.

“Coffee?”

“You know me so well.”

“Of course I do.”

“And that’s what I like about you so much.”

You hand him his coffee and look him in the eyes, “I like you too.”

Growing up fat, you get made fun of for everything you do, even basic shit like eating and laughing and breathing are funny when you do it because youre fat! And its so hard to not carry that with you as you get older, like I’m still embarassed to eat or dance in front of people or smile in pictures and its ridiculous and I hate it and I wish I was treated with more humanity
