We have all of Maomao's thoughts in LNs 5 6 and 7 about her complicated feelings on Jinshi and his several indirect proposals, but man I can't imagine how infuriating Maomao's behavior must've been from Jinshi's point of view this entire time

Because he already knows Maomao almost never asks for things out right. Their earliest case of miscommunication had him almost losing contact with her forever and her being driven into prostitution because she couldn't even ask to be kept as a mere servant in the rear palace

So then, he has to work with what little she says and she does, to make sure they never find themselves in a situation like that again. And what does Maomao do? Lets him sleep on her lap, She feeds him, tucks him into bed, sings him to sleep, constantly fusses about his health and sleep, lets him lay down in her bed, strokes his hair, etc

Also, I may be speaking on conjecture here (forgive me Maomao & Luomen) but was him sleeping in the carriage on the way to WC his indirect way of wanting to cuddle up next to her in some privacy, that Maomao's pov just scowled at and left (there's also always the option he's just dense as fuck ik)

And this isn't a modern friendship where: hey! boys and girls can cuddle watching a movie and still just be friends! don't be weirdo!

You don't do that stuff with the opposite sex in such a conservative society unless it's courting (even then their actions are a tad inappropriate).

Not to mention, it's not even just him initiating all of this anymore, it's Maomao, too, meaning his initiative is being reciprocated. And then she wears his hairpin to the fucking bride banquet Jinshi is excited this is working! they're on the same page, she took the final step of making it public to everyone, and then... she says he should marry Lishu?

She can complain about Jinshi not saying what he wants or means directly, but she's just as guilty

Yes yes and yes. Seriously I keep saying that it wasn’t normal for her to just keep being so touchy with him and also in private (which they mention all the time having to be discreet about anyway). And then she actually ups the intensity several times by playing around with him (the face make-up, the bar interaction) and stroking his hair and wearing the pin yet everyone sees it as his problem when he takes that as her finally showing interest? If a girl told me she did all that even now but then had the audacity to suggest the guy go out with someone else I’d tell her she’s being rude as all get out. I love Maomao but she did Jinshi really wrong in taking all his affection, reciprocating a lot of it but then acting like it doesn’t exist (basically the in-novel equivalent of “new number, who dis?”).

Jinshi is not the predator people make him out to be, at worst he’s just a super confused guy who has immense feelings for one girl and thought she was finally crushing him back only to be summarily brushed off. If the roles were reversed and a guy did this to the girl we’d all be screaming at him going, “you can’t play with someone’s feelings like that.” Again, love them both but noting Maomao’s part in it all is critical to getting that when Jinshi pouts or acts out, he’s ironically still showing an immense level of restraint for his age given the way Maomao sends so many mixed signals. Love that more people are posting about this!

But Maomao truly believes herself to be incapable of love. It's not true, of course. Evidently by the way she acts around Jinshi and other people she cares about. No one else believes this, but it doesn't matter because Maomao believes this about herself

I think there's an element of care for him when she suggests Lishu. She knows he doesn't want any of the women lusting after him, that he wants someone he can trust and be vulnerable with, someone who'd love him and show affection, and out of all the available option, Lishu is not only the least bad, but she's also kind of a good option that somewhat meets this criteria from Maomao's perspective

Jinshi really is trying his best and has been having more character growth than the MC dammit! Any mistake he does in pushing her boundaries is only done once and then he's immediately learning. Maomao? She continues to do the same ol bullshit for 10+ LNs with no reflection even when she hurts others

In LN 7, when she likens Jinshi to the man who visited a courtesan constantly but never made his intentions clear, girl... YOU are that man! It's you who just assumed you'll forever have this lovely ambiguous relationship with Jinshi that brings you immense comfort and satisfaction without having to put yourself out there! And eventually, it is Maomao who needed to be unequivocal in her intentions and feelings for things to move forwards, because Jinshi has always been that

So I didn't think I would see a mistranslation so thoroughly bad that "get your consent" was altered into "remove obstacles" but I really should stop being surprised.

There's a lot more wrong with LN7 Chapter 18 but, as always, there is a particularly notable change that significantly alters the relationship between Jinshi and Maomao.

For context, Jinshi and Maomao have a big argument because both of them are tired and stressed.

Jinshi is having constant assassination attempts made on his life and is barely sleeping while managing the bureaucratic chaos the Shrine Maiden and the White Lady are causing, all while being pressured to just shut up and marry someone. Meanwhile, Maomao's friend almost died from a poisoning, and she just had a real fight with her father causing her to feel resentment towards Luomen for the first time in her life.

After Maomao demands Jinshi make his intentions clear, he announces he will marry her. He's blushing, she's pale, because she is aware that he could use his status to order her to marry him and she would not be able to legally say no.

So what Jinshi says is QUITE IMPORTANT. Because it's a RESPONSE to her FEAR.

Original Japanese:

「必ず納得するだけの状況にしてやる、覚悟していろ」 "Without fail (only with) consent (as much as I can) OF the circumstances FOR doing it for you, (so) mentally prepare."

As a translation, maybe you could use "I'll satisfy every term you have" or "I'll change the situation until you're in agreement" or "I'll convince you that it can be done," but the important part of the character arc is that he is saying he won't officially move on her until she wants it too.

(Also, as a side note, he's being so much more casual and rude than in the official version. This makes so much more sense to me. Maomao likes him best when he's acting genuinely and childish-- of course his intimacy sounds like "IM REALLY GONNA DO IT MAOMAO. WATCH ME MATCH UR FREAK.")

However, instead, the Official English version says,

“For you, I will remove every obstacle that keeps us apart. One day. Just know that.”

this was a fine line until I uncovered the original and, suddenly, the story made more sense.

ok was rewatching the apothecary diaries again and noticed something crazy i haven't seen anyone talking about yet

so in the episode "the new pure consort" (s1ep14) loulan is introduced right, and the colors are really muted, like so:

in fact, the only red and green we get during loulan's introduction are her eyes and accessories
