alternate scene: I refuse to believe Vox would hurt his son
Vox and Alastor go to couples therapy
My favorite thing about Radiostatic is just how similar and yet so different Vox and Alastor are towards their art/craft.
Both of them are incredibly good showmen and very charismatic, and are willing to kill to get what they want. I know some people have been saying with the reveal of Brighter that Vox isn't actually charismatic, that the only way he got to where he was is by those murders, but that's not entirely true. We see that he does have those skills like Alastor - he's able to rally nearly all of hell into a war against heaven, even convincing other overlords to join him (including notoriously hard to impress overlords like Carmilla). He manages to throw a performance so entertaining it steals attention from Lucifer, their king, who pops in with an impressive light show and display of power.
In his life, Vox still shows this same charm and skill of performance, lacking showmanship isn't his issue. The issue he finds is that he wants to keep climbing but the positions he's greedy for were filled long before he arrived. He could wait for those positions to open naturally, for the other hosts or producers to retire or move on to other positions/projects, but in Vox's mind that would take too long. Killing is simply faster, but he shows that he has the charm and ability to fill their role very easily once the opportunity to perform shows itself. After all it's not like they had to choose him specifically to take over those positions, but when the opening was available he knew just what to say to swoop in and take control.
Where the two of them really differ is how they handle progress.
Alastor sees the benefits of making something built to last. He sees how something made with passion and in a style he enjoys performing in will always have an audience. His weakness in this regard is that he refuses to acknowledge the benefits of change. He digs his heels in and refuses to consider new perspectives, new themes, new audiences that he could reach. He limits himself to one specific thing and doesn't recognize how letting yourself and your art evolve and grow can be beneficial.
Vox is the exact opposite. He recognizes how new material, new ideas, and new perspectives can garner an audience. What he doesn't recognize (at least, not anymore) is that something simply existing in it's own space can have it's own merit and be worthy of attention. Something built to last has a level of quality that gives it more staying power than constantly trying to change to keep up with trends and what the masses deem as popular.
I really think the two of them could absolutely make amazing work and they would bounce off each other so well if they would just recognize this and meet each other half way. If Alastor were to acknowledge the benefits of letting yourself grow and expand out of your comfort zone to find new ideas, and Vox were to slow down and recognize that not everything needs to be new, new, new.
Oh it is fascinating that Alastor speaks so lowly of Vox "relying" on others for power when Alastor himself does the same exact thing.
The whole reason he's on a leash in the first place was so he could be "The Strongest Sinner in all of Hell" - he didn't even get there by his own power or planning! He asked someone with more power than himself to bring him up!
Then he even compares Vox to himself, saying they were as close to equals as he thought was possible (which makes sense, he knows for a fact that he's the most powerful by default cause of his deal) so it's no wonder he respected Vox! The television got to Alastor's level of power all by himself through careful scheming and planning and manipulation!
I honestly can't tell if Alastor is unaware of how hypocritical he's being, or if he's doing it on purpose to keep Vox from figuring out the truth by misleading him, but it's fascinating to see.
And for the record, I don't think the laughter he gives when he rejected Vox was genuine. I think he knows Rosie wouldn't let him join up with some other sinner and distract him from whatever her ultimate goal is and so he had to lay it on thick in front of Vox that he doesn't care for him when he really, really does. Vox was touching him you guys. He was touching his shoulder and got a genuine chuckle from Alastor just for a throw away line in an imitation voice. I think Alastor wanted more than anything to say "yes" to his proposal but knew it wouldn't work out.
Sometimes I think about messaging you and seeing if we can try being friends again

If I’ve learned anything from about 25 years of actively being engaged in fandom, it’s this: fuck everybody else.
Your favorite character ain’t the fandom’s favorite character? Fuck ‘em.
Your ship is the rarepair or the one people think is icky? Fuck ‘em.
You like the tropes and meta and character analysis that make other people roll their eyes? Fuck ‘em.
Engage with fandom in the ways that make you happy and comfortable and fulfilled and fuck everybody else. Like the things you like because you like them, because not everybody else is gonna love them the way you do.
Be cringe and be free, hallowed be thy name, goddamn.

I suddenly understand why jewelry is expensive
Hopefully people will start to realize why trades in general are so expensive. You're paying for someone's experience to make a good finished product that takes skill and years of practice.
However there is also a giant gap that needs to be filled in trades. As people are aging out of jobs like tailors, carpenters, bookbinders, leatherworkers, etc, there aren't enough young people going INTO the trades to repopulate the jobs.
Please. Please. Consider going into trades.
These are the kinds of jobs people "fall into," because they aren't visible, and are never talked about.
Kids never grow up telling people they want to be a bookbinder. They don't know they even exist. And schools never ever present them as valid options. And if they do talk about them, they are treated as invalid compaired to NFL Linebacker, President, and Brain Surgeon. After all "jewelry maker" is something people do to supplement their "burger flipping" income, and not an extension of blacksmithing.
But that's the crux of it, isn't it? Crafting and trade skills are an extension of artistic skills, which are often seen as completely invalid, and a total waist of time.
As the daughter of a professional bookbinder/book restorer, I had to reblog.
reblogging because I was in a course at college that covered Artisan skills such as these. I have friends who have since gone on to do Jewellery, Carpentry, Ceramics, Glasswork AND Blacksmithing. Ironically I ‘fell into’ comics.
windows to Artisan jobs are still around, the rising interest of upcycling and restoration has brought young folk into doing them.
Boosting because Artisan trades should be valued and carried on.
One quiet day on the farm, the Little Red Hen found some wheat seeds and decided to make bread.
"Who will help me plant these seeds?" the Little Red Hen asked.
"I would." said the Horse "But I'm a workhorse, and I'm too busy moving carts around."
And so the Little Red Hen planted the seeds by herself. And they grew into bountiful golden crops.
"Who will help me harvest the wheat?" the Little Red Hen asked.
"I would." said the Dog "But I'm a guarddog, and I'm too busy keeping away burglars and predators."
And so the Little Red Hen harvested the wheat herself and made it into flour.
"Who will help me bake the flour?" the Little Red Hen asked.
"I would." said the Pig "But I'm a mother of 5 newborn piglets, and I'm too busy taking care of my young."
And so the Little Red Hen baked the bread herself into twenty beautiful loaves.
"Who will help me eat the bread?" the Little Red Hen asked.
"We would." said the Farm Animals. "But we're ashamed, for we didn't do anything to make the bread."
"Nonsense!" said the Little Red Hen. "You, Horse, helped move around the stones that built my oven. You, Dog, kept me safe while I worked. And you, Pig, are raising a new generation of Farm Animals, who will too contribute to our Farm one day. You've all helped me so much by simply being you."
"Besides," the Little Red Hen added. "I couldn't possibly eat all the loaves on my own, most of them would go to waste. Come, eat with me."
And so the Little Red Hen and the Farm Animals ate the bread together. And all saw their own, and each other's, worth.
