Just watched Akron (2015)

(LGBTQ+ movie)

It was good. I enjoyed the fact that both families were supportive of their son's sexualities and there was no coming out trauma, which allowed it to focus on other things and gave it a very different feel to a lot of mlm romances. It was low stakes, but it still made me cry. It was messy, it was human, it was a little open ended but ultimately satisfactory.

Biggest ick was that I really wish the end of the film had as much content with the main ship. It focused a whole lot more on the family dynamics and the Terrible Event Of The Past tm. I think that could have been rectified if Christopher and Benny had had one or two scenes near the end that allowed them to have just that tiny bit more relationship resolvement. I also felt like a resolution between Christopher and his mother was missing, but on the whole that sort of added to the "family is messy but we all need to try harder" vibe. Not sure how I felt about Carol in the end but I loved how Benny's family resolved.

6.5/10, would recommend of you want a low stakes mlm romance and you're bored.

People find it easy to hate Kevin Day because he’s an imperfect victim. No he’s not whimpering and kind. No he didn’t prioritise someone else’s survival over his own. No he didn’t rebel and chose to adapt to survive. He isn’t any less worthy of empathy for being “a coward” or for any of the above things.

In the end, Andrew learns how to braid Neil’s hair. at some point, Neil actually lets it grow out, almost to his shoulders, and sooner or later, something has to be done with it beyond the most basic attempts at taming it. why? because those ridiculous ginger curls of his behave for a day, maybe two (depending on whatever mood his hair wakes up in that particular Monday), and then, out of nowhere, collapse into something like the mane of a sleepy, rumpled lion cub. the first time Andrew sees what Neil has done to his own hair, he makes a silent decision: from now on, he’s handling it.

that’s how they end up in the bathroom—Neil sitting on the closed toilet lid, Andrew standing behind him, carefully working through the stubborn curls with a comb. patiently untangling them, then dividing the mess into three sections and weaving them together. It’s easy to learn. It takes barely a minute—Neil doesn’t have that much hair to begin with. four loops, maybe five, and it’s done. at the end, Andrew secures it with a simple hair tie, already thinking: should I get Josten a pack of those stupid ones with little shapes on them? yeah. foxes. definitely.

he presses a brief kiss to the crown of Neil’s head and nudges his shoulder. “You’re free,” he says, like he’s dismissing him. and for the rest of the day, Neil walks around with that short, ridiculous braid—already waiting for a few days to pass, just so Andrew will do it again, fingers moving through his hair, gentle and steady.

I have actually made progress on an Aaron centric kevaaron fic (meaning I know what I’m doing/where I’m going) (yes it’s new, yes it’s loosely based on The Great Divide album)

and also a shorter kevsethaaron fic (less progress but we’re getting there)
