Today, I offer you: Icemav who are very close in the years after Top Gun, with Goose and Layton and being instructors really bringing them together, but they become distant as their career aspirations take them to different places. Ice is chasing promotions, Mav is chasing adventure, it's really no wonder that they grow distant. They don't have as much time to keep in touch, not many opportunities to meet up, it was predictable, really.

Point is, with all of that, Mav has no idea about everything that Ice does for him. About all the favors he's constantly collecting and trading in, the pissed off brass he keeps dealing with because of him.

Maybe the way he finally figures it out is some bitter pissed off Commander making some remarks in a meeting with him. After being dismissed, he goes straight for the phone and dials the last number he remembers Ice having.

Maybe he's kinda pissed off at first - maybe because the Commander called him "Kazansky's pet project" and that's the last thing he wants to be. And Ice isn't exactly happy either because he wasn't really planning on Mav ever actually finding out, so it throws him off - maybe because he never quite figured out how to explain himself, how to say that he cares about Mav so much (loves him, even) and that it's clear to him that Mav needs to fly maybe more than he needs to breathe and he just wants him to be happy.

That one phone call is nowhere near enough for everything that needs to be said between them, but it does help them reconnect. They agree to meet up, they have dinner and talk about it, and they both realize that they never want to not have this - each other - ever again.

Pardon the NSFW on main but sub!Driver driving on a gig remembering the way he was pinned against the hood of his car and briefly losing focus..

ooh. it's a late night gig, as usual. it's near downtown though, which makes it a bit more dangerous. he's got his watch set up for five minutes, and he's waiting patiently. his eyes drift out over the hood of his car, and the shadows at night remind him of the same shadows in shannon's garage where you had hooked up again just earlier that day (among other times). the guys get back before he can get too lost, and he's driving away. there's a cop on his tail, he's speeding up to get away. a chase ensues, and he's so lost in the focus of it. the familiarity of doing something he loves. there's a sound as something smacks on his hood (a tree branch, or a pinecone, he can't tell, he's going too fast). and the sound transports him back to something else he loves, something else he's familiar with. the car slows briefly as he remembers.

he can feel your grip against his wrists, the cool glass of the windshield against them, even as it heats up quick with how hot his body feels. your other hand against his hips holding him against the hood of this very car. the feeling of—

"look out!"

he snaps back into the present as one of the guys who hired him shouts. driver manages to swerve away from another car, and eventually shakes off the cops while his blood is still hot and he can still remember the feeling of you inside of him. (he gets the job done. he also immediately drives to your house and lets you pin him again.)

Imagine Grace defined his name as the elegance definition of grace and Rocky spends years thinking how fucking ironic this clumsy leaky space blobs name is.

Until Grace slips out a sentence along the lines of "could you give me a little grace here" and Rocky immediately points out he used a word wrong so Grace has to explain that yeah, grace means elegance but it can also mean mercy sometimes too.

And Rocky has to suddenly reconcile that the clumsy leaky blob that saved his life twice, that almost certainly doomed himself to come back for him, name is Mercy.
