Marduk - is the Mesopotoamian god of water, vegetation, judgment, and magic. His consort is the goddess Sarpanit. He is also regarded as the son of Enki and Damkina and the heir of Anu. He was the patron deity of the city of Babylon, and as that city came to be the political centre of the Babylonian world, so too Marduk’s powers rose to great importance. The traits belonging to gods who, in an earlier period, were recognized as the heads of the pantheon passed to Marduk, in particular those from Enlil, and he became head of the gods. During Sumerian times, his name was probably pronounced Marutuk (Marduk was a Babylonian spelling) and he is associated with the planet, Jupiter.
