that first half is so especially real. (not that i'm saying people shouldn't stop being so negative about their own art and w/e but i'll get to that in a min)
but it has always been so BAFFLING to me when artists foam at the mouth when someone says their art/OCs remind someone of something else that looks or has vibes similar to what an artist has shared online. is art not for the viewer to interpret in their own way? genuinely, if u don't want ur art/OCs to be compared to any other work of art/character, keep it to urself in a sketchbook, no one can ever 'offend' u by saying it looks like something else u didn't intend to or don't feel like it does look that way if u don't share it for other people to interpret and connect with in their own way.
but also, guess what girlie pops. no one is 100% unique in what they create. it's all been done before and will be done 1000x over again down the road. so why ur getting offended ur stuff looks like something else that exists is just wild behavior to me and ur also hurting other people's way of engaging with art in this world if u bite someone's head off for being giddy something looks similar to something else they like.
it's just always been so weird to me. if i ever get around to posting my art again and actually making refs of my OCs, go ahead and compare them to whatever they seem like to u. whether or not i agree or disagree with that is my own thing and if i don't like the way something is being compared to (such as certain fandoms/works/people i dislike) i will simply. put that work/OC back in a place where just i can engage with it rather than making someone feel bad for comparing it to something else.
the second part of that is also, yes what are we doing when we get upset that someone is inspired by or what's to know new resources/art supplies to try out and explore art in their own way? u likely didn't learn/find those things on UR own, someone likely told U techniques/supplies so what's it hurting for u to share with someone else (and yes, i get the whole 'i'm a popular artist/i get asked this a lot' and the most u can do is.. make a supply list, post it somewhere accessible to people who know how to actually look for credited things before spamming comments and leave it at that. ur never gonna stop people from asking about stuff unless u just never allow comments on anything. i literally like to watch someone do ipad drawings and they have listed every possible thing u could ever what to know about their drawing process (other than their brush settings on procreate which i wish they could cos mine never seem to operate the same as theirs does and i would like it to act more like theirs with the reshaping effects it does) and there's still a dozen or so comments that will ask for program/tools despite them putting it in every single youtube video description.)
but yea. ur a loser if u keep info away from people acting like someone's gonna steal ur technique or something same/similar/better than u. no two people will make art the same way. (there's a lil caveat to this tho, with people now starting to ask what 'style' people draw in cos now we have to content with even BIGGER losers who don't even wanna pick up a pencil to try anything in their life and they're likely looking for prompt terms so they can pretend to be artists with stupid a/i models but that's a separate issue)
the second half of the whole post, yea. we need to stop being so hard on ourselves/about our art. i used to be like this as well (and some way, a lil bit, still am kinda? this way but not outloud so much anymore i just kinda am in general unhappy with my own art and i haven't been able to figure out exactly why still) but being negative about ur art esp TO other artists... makes everyone feel bad. artists don't really like to engage with u in that way and it almost feels like a pity party to shield ur own ego for being negative but it also just puts artists in an awkward position of like well.. they worked a lot to do their art and now ur making them feel bad for saying their art is better than urs/ur art sucks etc. i had some artists outright tell me this directly and it completely changed how i engage with other artists/how i talk about my own art to people.
while i am not really happy with my art, that's a me thing. i haven't practiced enough/much at all lately. i haven't figured out what it is i want from my art/what will make me like it again and it has nothing to do with the fact that other people are probably actively all the time drawing, improving and learning their own art process. it sucks to hear this, but literally no one wants to hear u put down ur own art. it's not gonna make anyone suddenly be like omgosh no ur art is rly amazing ur doing so good blah blah. it's just gonna make people feel weird that ur prolly fishing for them to stop feeling good about their own art and accept ur pity party and try to not make u feel as bad about being unhappy with ur art. if u don't like ur art, change it. experiment. stop looking at others art for a while and go engage with nature or something of interest and just Be with ur art instead of trying to do art for the attention of people or numbers online. comparison will always kill ur own enjoyment of things. stop doing it.
