Friendly reminder that bi women used to be called lesbians too until terfs forcefully kicked them out bc they thought their connection to men made them impure so if you don't support mspec lesbians reclaiming the label "lesbian" you're playing into the terfs hands

you know I do talk about how the whole lesbian separatist political lesbian thing did create a rift between bi women and lesbians but there's if there's one thing that really pisses me off here is the agency that y'all rip away from bi women as if bi women simply had no choice but to pack their bags and stop identifying as lesbians.

"terfs" (by which you actually probably mean radfems/lesbian separatists, because I would sure hope that you wouldn't use a term for a group that specifically targets trans women and has no qualms allying with men to do it when this has little to do with trans women, right?) did not get the lesbian community to collectively kick bi women out. that's fucking stupid. that wouldnt even make sense logistically.

and bi women had already started identifying as bisexual and engaging in bisexual activism for some time including allying with bisexual men. by saying that we only started identifying as bisexual because the mean lesbians wouldn't let us in is like. so fucking ignorant and frankly insulting.

"lesbian" at the end of the day ultimately had to do with love and sex between women and while that is important to me as a bi woman it does not encompass the entirety of who I am and I'm perfectly fine with it coming to mean that exclusively because yeah why not have a separate word for a separate experience? I can still have solidarity with lesbians because I respect their identities and I would hope they respect mine.

I love identifying as bisexual because it is an inherently gender neutral identity that allows me to share community with people of all genders and I love knowing that my bisexual identity is enough because I don't feel insecure in the knowledge that loving women is inherently a part of being bi. if you can't accept that bisexuality is a whole identity then that's your problem but at least learn your history and don't just twist it to conveniently fit your beliefs.

i took a class on interwar japanese culture in undergrad and we learned about how class-s relationships and culture were basically promoted and encouraged by japanese moral guardians in the early decades of the twentieth century who wanted young women to essentially “practice” being someone’s wife in a way that did not involve fraternizing with men before marriage. so the obvious solution was to have girls and young women “practice” with each other. obviously the expectation was that these relationships were emotionally intense but NOT sexual, and unambiguous homosexuality was looked down upon. but of course same-sex attraction will happen in pretty much every society so many of these class-s girls would just go ahead and become romantically/sexually involved anyway. then the class-s subculture went on to influence and shape the origins of the yuri genre in the postwar era. it’s just funny how a lot of yuri tropes can be traced to an attempt to discipline women to perform traditional gender roles that in many cases just completely backfired
