So I have a question for ladies just out of curiosity. Y’all still believe in taking your partners last name when you get married?
Is there any reason why you wouldn’t or why you absolutely think you should? Or are you into hyphenating? Just thoughts about it in general?
I’m kind of on the fence about it.
I'm a Married Person, and I kept my name. It wasn't really a question. My mom kept hers, my grandmother did as well, so it wasn't really a "big deal" in any way not to change mine. I'm sharing my life with my husband, not assuming his identity or erasing my own.
I'm into hyphenation in the abstract, but I have a very long last name as it is, and our hyphenated names looked like Scrabble Salad.
I do think about what will happen with the kids. I'd like my name involved in theirs somehow. My sister and I both have my mother's last name as our middle names, so that's an idea. I also know a family with two children, one with their mother's last name, and one with the father's.
I think the name changing miiiiight be becoming a little less ubiquitous, with changing attitudes (slowly) towards women's equality as well as towards same-sex marriage (where there is no such "tradition," since the name changing thing is a straight man's invention).
I say do what you feel. If you like your spouse's name more than your own, hell yeah, take the opportunity to level up in the last name department. But it shouldn't be assumed that you HAVE to.
