Open starter—Fourth of July

Peter forgot that the Fourth of July was today when he went out for his evening patrol. He definitely should've remembered with all the decorations and stuff, but it didn't come to mind as he threw himself out his bedroom window and into the city.

It's a pretty quiet evening, so he decides to call it an early night and turns towards home right after sunset. The fireworks begin when he's mid-swing, and he harshly startles before slamming into the closed common room window. His fingers and toes just barely find purchase quickly enough to keep himself from falling.

Brooke, sitting on one of the couches and reading in an attempt to block out the noise from the fireworks, doesn’t even see him before she hears the loud “thud” against the glass. She startles immediately, her book falling from her hands as she jumps to her feet to see what had just collided with the window.

“Jesus, Pete… I was really betting on it being an unusually large bird this time…”

Peter rushed to his room the moment the team got home from the latest mission. He didn't say anything, just went in there, shut the door, changed out of his suit, and asked FRIDAY not to let anyone in.

A feature of today's fight was minds being messed with. Visions, whatever you call them. A lot of the team was afflicted with them, but Peter got really freaked out by his. It was like his nightmares, just even more real: losing control and hurting the people he loves. He remembers killing the people he loves, remembers their blood pooling on the ground around him, remembers the smell, remembers how it felt on his hands.

That's why he's hiding now. He lays curled in on himself on his bed, hands shaking as he tries not to think about the nightmarish vision. His heart rate spikes so hard that it overrides his command to FRIDAY, and she alerts the team of it.

Brooke knocks on the door twice before opening, wanting to give him some semblance of privacy before barging in.

“Hey, Peter, you good? Friday said-” she pauses, seeing the distressed state he seems to be stuck in. “Fuck, Pete, are you okay? Do you need me to get Dad?”

She immediately rushes toward the bed, a rare flicker of worry flashing across the face that usually houses a small smile or sarcastic quip.

Peter flinches back when Brooke rushes towards the bed, a flash of fear spreading across his face. It's not fear for himself, it's fear for her. He braces his hands behind him on the bed, trying to regulate his breathing as he shakes his head. "No, no, I'm fine, don't get Dad. Please don't get Dad. You don't have to be in here, I'm fine."

Brooke scoffs lightly, more worried than mocking. “Don’t start with me, Pete, we both know Friday just sent an ‘SOS’ to the whole tower. Now are you going to tell me what the fuck is bothering you, or do I need to threaten you with the human lie detector?” She sits on the edge of the comforter, the bed creaking slightly under the new weight.

Peter stares at Brooke for a few seconds, eyes widening slightly when she sits on the bed. As a reaction, he pulls himself to the far side of it. "No— no, you don't." He burrows his face into the comforter. "The mission..."

Brooke gets off of the bed slowly, putting her hands up as she takes a step back. “Okay, okay, no sitting, got it…” She takes note of the space that’s been suddenly put in between them, and more importantly, the look on his face. “…What about the mission, Pete?”
