its that day again, another b&r, another set of bans. this one was pretty calm, especially compared to some recent announcements.

Banned and Restricted Announcement – June 29, 2026

See statements regarding Legacy, Pauper, and Brawl. Changes will be effective June 29, 2026.

no changes in standard, modern, pioneer, vintage, and some mtga formats i dont care about. no changes in standard and modern make sense, standard looks okay right now, and theres a modern pt coming up and wizards doesnt want to change the format again when they banned phlage and lotus field a month ago. The other formats i cant say much about, mostly due to lack of experience.

legacy: candelabra of tawnos is banned

i dont play a lot of legacy, but im told by my friends that play legacy that this a good change. apparently colorless tron was making waves in the format. interestingly, candelabra is now the second card afaik that has been banned twice (the other, famously, being golgari grave-troll in modern).

pauper: seeker of skybreak is banned

yeah, i cant blame them for this one. i got some games in with the deck in a jund shell and it was great when i could pull it off (see my other post about this topic). ive also seen some naya gates decks run the combo too, but i never got to see them in action. given that paupergeddon is coming up, wizards doesnt want the combo deck dominating the field.

brawl: force of will, subtlety, wash away, ugin's labyrinth, time warp, and temporal manipulation are all banned

i havent been playing as much brawl in the last few months, but with the introduction of competitive brawl (which i just recently learned about) i can understand why the arena team wants to reduce the number of turbo pieces in regular brawl.

finally got around to building a new cedh (at least thats what i tell myself it is) deck. i try to build a new deck for each set that comes out but ive so busy the last few months i havent been able to keep up (also tmnt was just super boring when it came to legendary designs). anyway uhhh crystal looked fun so i put a 4-color slop deck together:

every time i see a new north 100 showdown (a canadian highlander throwdown) episode, i get this little bit of inspiration to put together a paper canlander list. unfortunately i live nowhere near anyone else who knows or plays the format. damn.

i wish i could get that cube playmat, says something like “cube will outlive magic”. i think that’s a meaningful statement. cube is endlessly replayable and customizable, a cube can exist free from whatever else happens to be going on in magic at the moment.

anyway that’s why i like cube and why i think more people should play it
