Two Polish daguerreotypes dated between 1840-1860, titled Portait of Mr. Kiciński and Portrait of Mrs. Kicińska.
Somewhere in the West
Continuing my month long series of posts with images made in New Mexico with the Great Divide as my focus or jumping off point. After seeing the tiny spot of Pueblo Pintado, where I somehow managed to come away with no useful images, I turned away from the Divide and headed for Santa Fe.
After driving through Torreon I was driving along Power Line Road and was startled to see the form of Cabezon Peak looming in the distance. Not unique in this area of the world, these forms are known as a volcanic plugs, or necks. From what I gather, this hunk of basalt, which had filled the vent, is what's left behind when the remainder of the volcano has eroded away. For those interested, this site has some great information on this geological phenomenon and the surrounding area.

Somewhere in the West
Continuing my month long series of posts with images made in New Mexico with the Great Divide as my focus or jumping off point: this is the Very Large Array, twenty-two miles west of Magdalena (and not terribly far from the Divide).
The Array is comprised of 27 operating dishes which are spread out in three directions across the Plains of San Agustin. A corresponding double track railroad runs alongside; the tracks are used by a special device that can lift one of the monstrous dishes (82 feet in diameter), along with its stand, and haul it back and forth, to and from, a huge shop building for servicing. There are 28 dishes total, with one always in the shop. For a sense of scale, note the size of the pickup truck below.
It's intriguing to watch as all the dishes move in unison to point this direction or that. I timed my visit at the end of day thinking I could shoot while the sun set, and a fine New Mexican sunset it was.
The Artemis II mission was happening at that time, and I wondered if it might be involved with that, but know not. The Array was featured in the 1997 film, Contact, but I think it's more about researching quasars and the like rather than listening for intelligent life, but I could be wrong. Go here to read more about this fascinating research site.

George Tiller was murdered 13 years ago today (May 31 2022)
People noting this anniversary reminding me again that it is such an insane failure of the pro-choice movement that we do not as a nation think of George Tiller as a civil rights hero and additionally a martyr at the level of MLK Jr. or a Kennedy. So, you know, do your part, etc.

I leave that as an exercise for the reader.

Been talking about this with friends so I present to you, the cursed spectrum of media literacy
The Mississippi and smaller rivers and streams provided many fish, with freshwater drum, catfish, northern pike, suckers, gar, bowfin, bullheads and sturgeon popular. Fishing techniques have been suggested from the nature of some of the artifacts recovered. They can also be suggested from the nature and size of the fish. Large fish may have been speared. Nets and seines would have been the most efficient way to harvest schools of smaller fish in the shallow backwaters. Even crayfish and turtles were eaten. Pictured is a bone harpoon (left) and two netsinkers (right).
