This piece, here realised by Tony Rimbaud aka I’m Dr Buoyant, and the one below by Same Actor, are both interpretations of a score in Music in Text which asks the performer to go to seven different places and record a single note in each.

It could be the same note, it could be a different one. It could be sung or played on an instrument. Quite what you should then do with all seven recorded notes is left somewhat up to your interpretation.

I first met both Chris and Tony through the Spirit of Gravity, a collective of artists working with electronic music based in Brighton. That was probably about 15 years ago, or near enough, but the collective continues to do very interesting things in Brighton and if you’re down there I highly recommend checking out what they do.

But I was particularly pleased that Tony and Chris both chose to interpret the same score from the book – especially when they both ended up doing such different things with it. I’m very fond of both.

On Friday, 26th June, I performed interpretations of three scores from Music in Text (‘Sonic Sweetener’, ‘Digital Versatile Music’ & ‘Accidental Broadcasts’) at Scaledown, a long-standing night of live music held upstairs at the King & Queen on Foley Street in Fitzrovia since 2004.

Unbeknownst to me, in the audience, the artist Julie Pickard was sketching as I performed. Presented here are her three drawings, corresponding to the three pieces I performed.

Points of Listening workshop at London College of Communications, 14th May 2014.

Last May, I was fortunate to attend one of the Points of Listening workshops organised by CRISAP (Creative Research Into Sound Arts Practice) at the London College of Communication. The workshop was all about text scores. After playing together some classic pieces – a Sonic Meditation by Pauline Oliveros, Christopher Hobbs’s Walk Event, Nivea Cream Piece by Alison Knowles – we went on to play a recent piece by Viv Corringham (who was present at the session) and, finally, one of my pieces from Music in Text entitled Tending to Converge. Cathy Lane was leading the session and playing clarinet. I had my Korg Monotron and there were maybe a dozen other players whose names, unfortunately, I can't remember

Music in Text: UK Press Release

Music in text. Text in music. Infuenced by experimental composers such as John Cage, Erik Satie and La Monte Young, Robert Barry is searching for new narratives, instructive and playful paths for musical composition. The book’s text-based scores intend to orient musicians in artistic performances as well as to guide listeners in a suggestive relation between sound and prose. A playful and inspiring collection of ideas on how to conceive musical scores.

Bobby Barry is a musician, composer and journalist based in London. As a musician, he goes by the moniker Monster Bobby and is the founder of the group A Little Orchestra, The Pipettes and Guards! Guards!. Barry is also a regular contributor to the magazines Frieze, The Quietus and The Wire.
