Happy to see this in places where I usually find white nationalist stickers.
Near campus a bit ago:
The Matriarch Isn’t the Villain. She’s the Mirror
I often hear a discourse where Celine in K-pop Demon Hunters, Alma in Encanto and Ming in Turning Red are seen as vilains. They’re the ones who restricted the younger generation, hurt them, and are ultimately responsible for their pain, trauma and self-doubt. They’re framed as the real villains of the story. But I’d like to differ.
These are stories of intergenerational trauma. They are women who survived, repressed, and tried to protect their families the only way they knew how: through control, perfectionism, and emotional suppression.
And yet, when the next generation begins to reclaim joy, freedom, softness — they become the obstacle. Not because they’re bad people, but because they’re scarred. Their minds cling to survival strategies, unable to recognize that the environment has changed.
Alma is still stuck fleeing the colonizers.
Ming is still afraid of her true self.
Celine believes that fear and mistakes must be hidden.
It’s not about hating these characters. It’s about how unprocessed trauma twists love into control. How survival, unexamined, turns into rigidity. These women were never given space to process their own pain and they project it onto their daughters and granddaughters.
And here’s something we rarely say enough: intergenerational trauma can create toxic patterns but that doesn’t always mean there was abuse or conscious harm. Even when their love becomes suffocating or controlling, these women are not necessarily “abusive parents.” They are daughters of silence, fear, and sacrifice. And they were never taught another way. It’s important to make that distinction, especially in a world that often pushes a binary, punitive reading of family dynamics.
They’re the product of a generation that was told to endure. But endurance without healing becomes its own kind of violence.
What’s powerful in these stories is that they don’t end in vengeance. They end in confrontation and transformation. The confrontation is necessary: the younger generation refuses the silence. Refuses the shame. Refuses to carry a burden that wasn’t theirs to begin with.
The house is destroyed in Encanto.
Mei accepts her full self.
So does Rumi.
And in the best cases, this confrontation allows the elder to soften too. Alma opens up. Ming listens. And I’m hoping in the sequel, Celine will open too.
Maybe that’s also why these stories speak so deeply to POC audiences. These aren’t stories about cutting ties. They’re stories about how hard it is to transform them, to protect ancestral bonds while refusing to perpetuate inherited pain. In many racialized families, collectivity, loyalty, and intergenerational duty are sacred... even when they come at the cost of personal boundaries.
And sometimes, Western individualist frameworks read these tensions as dysfunction or villainy. But for us, they’re just the difficult truth of growing up and trying to do better.
These women aren’t villains. That would be too easy. They embody the fragile, necessary work of bringing change without breaking the thread. These stories are about refusing to inherit their pain without reflection. Because love, without accountability, is not enough.
These stories show us that each generation has something to learn from the next. And the new generation must also break free from the chains they inherited while preserving what is meaningfull.
But it’s not just their story.
One day, we’ll be the older generation.
And we’ll need to be humble enough to learn from the ones after us.
So don’t be a fool.
We may be Mei, Rumi, or Mirabel today.
But tomorrow, we could be Ming, Celine, or Alma.
And when that time comes, we’ll realize how hard it is to unlearn what once kept us safe.
So let’s have compassion for all these characters.
Because these stories show us not just how the cycle of generations works, but how it can make us better, stronger, and more connected... if we’re all willing to go through the change.

edit (07/08/25): Thanks to several kind Colombian commenters and reblogs, I’ve learned that the historical context shown in Encanto is more likely tied to the Thousand Days’ War, a brutal civil war rather than direct colonial violence. I initially framed Abuela’s trauma through the lens of colonialism, which was a mistake. The real context is deeply rooted in internal ideological conflict. As a South asian viewer, I’m very grateful to those who shared insights ! I encourage readers to check the comments and reblogs for more historical nuance and brilliant perspectives 🧡
And thank you to everyone who shared, commented and interacted on this post !
a writing competition i was going to participate in again this year has announced that they now allow AI generated content to be submitted
their reasoning being that "we couldn't ban it even if we wanted to, every writer already uses it anyway"
"Every writer"?

https://www.tumblr.com/qqueenofhades/743255237060689920/the-thing-that-confuses-me-about-the-dont-vote
The “don’t vote” left’s point is basically that, if Biden gets a second term, it’ll basically signal that “They’ll vote for us as long as we’re not Republicans, why don’t we do some REAL fucked up shit, if we can get away with it?” It takes the power out of the people’s hands and places it firmly in the party’s.
I can’t completely disagree with that, my caveat is that there’s no real alternative system or party in place, because top-down change is ineffective; a third party president has to contend with a two party congress.
Except no. This whole "Biden just wants to do as much fucked up shit as possible while not being a Republican, and if you give him a second term he'll do more fucked up shit deliberately to spite you" mindset is only possible as an interpretation if you a) deliberately and comprehensively ignore everything he has done to date, and b) you approach the situation with the maximum bad faith possible. Not to mention, the ultimate outcome of this Big Important Teaching Biden A Lesson is that Trump gets back into power and makes everything orders of magnitude worse, because he does in fact want to deliberately do evil shit to everyone and says so at every opportunity. There is not some magical happy alternative that springs into existence by not voting. If you choose this as a year to Teach Biden A Lesson, you are enabling Trump. Trump will be much, much worse. If you don't care about that, I still do not care what your Great Ideology is. You are not helping anyone and you are directly and irreversibly hurting everyone.
I made a post a few days ago wherein I mentioned that I want to assess Biden fairly, taking into account both strengths and weaknesses, but the rampant bad-faith, lying, misreading, misrepresentation, and open sabotage of him (especially by the online left; the GOP sometimes only wishes they were as good at turning Biden's voter pool against him) makes it really difficult to do that. My frustration with those people makes me just want to go "BIDEN IS GREAT THE END." I know he is a flawed old man (though by literally every account of a career spent in public service, he really does care about making the world a better place and any remotely good faith reading of his accomplishments thus far can see that). It is also very likely that he goes MORE left in a second term because he won't have to face the electorate again, he has always gone more left when pushed before, and he's not actually the scheming genocidal mastermind that leftist social media paints him as. Shocking, I know.
I know there are things in the world we don't like and don't want and want to stop, and therefore we blame our own president for not making it stop. But I have zero, no, none, absolutely none whatsoever sympathy for this pseudo-populist "WE NEED TO TEACH BIDEN A LESSON BY ELECTING TRUMP AGAIN, I AM VERY MORAL MUCH ACTIVIST" mindset. There's this funny thing about America wherein it is still (for now) a democracy. If Biden wins a second term, he can't run again. I would take literally anything these people said more seriously if they focused on developing their dream progressive successor for 2028 (and also figured out how to get that person elected and in a place to make real change) rather than cynically sabotaging Biden in the most consequential election year, again, of our lifetimes. If you don't like him now, find a way to make his successor a better option. Throwing a toddler tantrum and handing the country back to a senile, deranged, fascist, revenge-riddled, theocratic Trump HELPS. NOBODY. I still don't know how many times I'm going to have to say that, but yeah.
Throwing a toddler tantrum and handing the country back to a senile, deranged, fascist, revenge-riddled, theocratic Trump HELPS. NOBODY.
louder for the morons in the back who are still whining about both parties being the same
Not voting for the left because they're not Left Enough also does not make the party go more left. It makes them go more right. Because that's where the votes are.
Reblogging because for the love of Christ, I wish the “I’m not going to vote for Biden because he’s not pure/ far left/ whatever enough for me” crowd would remember what, EXACTLY, it would mean for there to be a second Trump presidency.
Assuming that any checks currently in place would stop someone who’s mindset is “I’m perfect and DESERVE to be president” from turning our country into the closest approximation of Russia he can get, is not only naive, it’s dangerously, determinedly ignorant.
I said this in 2016 and I said it in 2020 and I'll say it again:
If you don't like the fact that the leftmost candidate of the two major parties isn't left enough, the solution is neither to refuse to vote, nor to "send a message" by voting third party. Both result in an advantage to the rightmost candidate.
The solution is, vote for the guy that's not quite good enough, and then lean on him hard.
Biden has moved farther to the left than any president since Roosevelt. Yes. He's gotten more of our agenda done than Clinton or Obama. And there's many things he's tried to do that the right wingers in Congress or in the Supreme Court have stopped him from doing. He's also moved farther to the left than any president I know of when you look at his whole career; at one point he was Liberal Lite, "moderate", pro-corporation, etc... and it seems he learned from it. He changed. So we're dealing with a guy who is capable of moving left, has done so, and could be asked to go farther.
The other candidate literally wants to become a dictator, eliminate freedom of the press, and spend our tax dollars persecuting his "enemies."
Do I like the fact that Biden is supporting Israel militarily when they have caused such an enormous and horrible death toll in Gaza? No. But we have treaties with Israel and we can't easily break them. Meanwhile we have actually seen him call Netanyahu out. Including saying basically "You keep this up and no one will be your friend", implying that he is threatening to withdraw support. Trump, meanwhile, is cheerfully Islamophobic and would happily murder every single Palestinian. You care about Palestine, there is only one legitimate choice. I'm sorry, I know you want to believe there are multiple moral options you can take, but there is really only one. In the US's winner-take-all first-past-the-post no ranked choice system, the guy who gets 51% of the vote and the guy who gets 90% of the vote are exactly the same.
Look, we can win this. The right's abortion bans are wildly unpopular; many people will be voting to try to restore the right to control our own bodies. Republican support skews older, but in four years millennials didn't magically reach a point of comfortable status quo where they're likely to start voting Republican; instead Republicans have doubled down on the crazy. Anti-maskers and ant-vaxxers, who are likely Republicans, are much more likely to have died of COVID than the reality-based community on the left, since Biden won by 7 million votes 4 years ago.
But Trump will do everything in his power to cheat. We can't just win by 51%. We have to trounce him and as many Republicans at the ballot box as we can, because they have lost the plot. Even the best ones refuse to do anything to stop the spread of this evil-for-its-own-sake movement that wants queers, Jews, and Muslims dead, POC subservient, and women of all races securely under the thumb of men. We have to stop this movement by sending a message to politicians, "these are not winning ideologies. Embrace these ideologies because of the fanatic fringe, and you will lose." Most of them aren't true believers; they're pandering. The only way to stop the Republicans being pointlessly destructive is to make so many of them lose, the rest realize, shit, the grownups are back, we better start acting like politicians and not demagogues again.
And one of the best ways to do that is to make sure Biden wins by such a large margin even Trump can't cheat his way to victory. Because he's ready. He's promised, there will be violence if he loses. (There will also be violence if he wins, but it will be state violence against us. If he loses, there will be rioting white thugs in red states, but the federal government will still have both the power and the will to try to stop that.) He's going to pull every dirty trick in the book to win. The only way to stop him is to win overwhelmingly. Then we get four more years of relative safety, where if Clarence Thomas dies or gets arrested we get a young liberal judge in his place, and in that time, we can push the Democratic party farther to the left, because they'll know why they won. They'll know who voted for them, and why, and they'll move in that direction because they want to keep winning.
You cannot save Gaza by making sure Biden loses. That is actually the worst possible thing that could happen, in terms of anything any American could do. Netanyahu wants Trump to win because Trump will back him up no matter what he does to the Palestinians.
Voting is not about proving how moral you are and selecting the perfect candidate. Voting is about getting the best possible candidate out of what is usually a lackluster selection. But this time, the choice is, an old guy who's not as charismatic and shiny as we'd like and hasn't done as much as we want, vs, literally, a wanna be dictator with an agenda that's pure evil.
"you are addicted to screens" no no you see i am actually addicted to my friends. unfortunately they live in there

✨Encanto Big Bang Interest Check!✨
Hey there, everyone! You may have seen @clownmoontoon posting about holding a 🌟Big Bang Event 🌟 for the Encanto community!
A Big Bang Event is where fic writers are paired up with artists - the writer writes a fic and the artist makes a piece to go with it.
@clownmoontoon, @sketchnwhatevr, @rinnysega, and I have been discussing the logistics and putting together the bones of a project, but before we make anything final, we’ll be basing our plans on this interest check!
If you’d be interested in participating in this exchange, please reblog this post and put in the tags whether you’d be submitting as an artist or a writer!
At the Encanto panel!!!
Happy Birthday Dolores ❤️💋!

*~*~*~*~*~*~*
It would be today.
I knew it was today.
We'd planned on him coming home today.
Even though it was six o'clock in the morning, I still looked out the window of the kitchen that faced the road into town expecting to see him walking toward Casita.
Agustín's mother had received a letter from her sister-in-law in the city saying that her brother was ill and refused to see a doctor. Being the sweet and caring man that he was, not to mention a mamá's boy - which I loved about him - he went on the three-day trek to the city. I'd sent him with enough small snacks to last him the three days to get there, the two weeks they would spend in the city, and then the three days to get back to the Encanto. Knowing him, he would go through at least half of the supply, but then there would also be enough in case anyone else needed it.
I nearly jumped out of my skin when I felt a hand on my shoulder. "Geez, Mamá, I'm sorry." Mirabel retracted her hand and held both up in surrender.
"Ay, I didn't hear you come in," I wiped my hands on the rag hanging from my apron. My brow furrowed, "What are you doing up already?"
She placed her hands on her hips and raised an eyebrow, "I should be asking you that. It isn't your turn today." She wasn't wrong. It had been two years since Casita was rebuilt and everyone but myself was in agreement on a cooking schedule. Having been irritatingly outnumbered, I had no choice but to follow it. This day was Mirabel's turn.
I sighed, "I couldn't sleep, and I thought I would just come down and get a start on it."
Mirabel squinted her eyes at me suspiciously and stood up straighter. She'd grown in the past two years and was now at eye-level with me. "I'll let you stay on one condition. You don't touch anything. "
"Mira I-"
"Nope. It's either that or you can watch for Papá through a different window." She crossed her arms and I suddenly felt as though I was looking in a mirror.
I crossed my arms and raised an eyebrow at her, "Mirabel Valentina Rojas Madrigal."
"Julieta Ana Rojas Madrigal," she countered. My jaw dropped and the smug look on her face said it all.
"This is a little unnerving..." Luisa said from the doorway. It wasn't a surprise that she was up, she was probably coming back from one of her morning runs. "If Mira didn't have glasses, I'd say you had an identical twin, Mamá."
I didn’t look away from my youngest daughter, “Ay, a non-identical sister and brother are enough. Tu batido is already made, mija. I made sure to put guava for added protein.”
“Thanks, Mamá, but... isn’t it Mirabel’s day to cook?” Luisa went over to the counter and picked up the fruit mix. She hummed with satisfaction. Everyone in the house made great smoothies for her, but she always said that no one made them like I made them. ‘A mother’s love,’ is what I always told her.
“That’s what I’ve been saying,” Mirabel said to her sister. Turning to look at her, she was distracted long enough that I could move to the flattop and flip another arepa. “Mamá!”
“It was going to burn!”
“Get out!”
“Perdóneme?” I put a hand over my heart.
“You heard me Out! Now!” she got behind me and actually started to push me toward the door. “Lu, help me!”
Luisa sipped her smoothie, “No thanks. I choose life.” That’s my girl. Mirabel may have been most like me, but Luisa was all Agustín, through and through.
Mirabel actually managed to push me out the door, and Casita seemed to help. “Casita! E tu Brute?” A tile flipped in response as if agreeing with Mirabel. “I’ve been betrayed by my own house. This is my kitchen!”
“Mamá, we go through this at least once a month. When will you-” one final shove that got me through the door, “-get it!? There. Casita, you know the drill.” With those words, a door slammed in my face.
I huffed, knowing what I was about to say was far from a threat, “Young lady, you just wait until your Papá gets home!”
“What? Will I hug her to death?”
I spun around and any thought of literally being forced out of la cocina was gone from my mind. “Ay, amor,” I smiled and moved the few steps to throw my arms around Agustín’s neck, his arms fitting perfectly, as they always had, around my waist. I pressed a kiss to his lips, firm but gentle, longing but so familiar. We stayed that way for what could have been hours or seconds, we couldn’t tell.
When we finally parted, I stared into his eyes, his glasses set a little off center. I placed a hand on his cheek and ran my thumb over his skin, my eyebrows furrowed, “You’re skinny,” I complained.
His laugh was like the sound of a symphony, “Conejito, I’ve always been slim.”
“Sí, but you’re too skinny. Didn’t your Tia feed you?” I ran my hands down his arms and held his hands, looking him over.
“She did,” he nodded, “But nothing compares to what you make for me.”
Grossed-out noises came from the kitchen. “You locked me out, now this is what you get.” I went to go kiss my husband again, but he put a hand up in front of me.
“Allow me.” His voice was deep and he wiggled his eyebrows. Taking my chin between his forefinger and thumb he held my face as he kissed me. Then before I knew it, he’d picked me up in his arms, eliciting a squeal of surprise from me. He was always much stronger than he looked, and honestly not skinny at all... not when you got a good look at him... with no clothes on. “Vamos, amante, we have lost time to make up for,” he said before kissing me again.
Hacking noises came from the kitchen now. “You two are honestly so disgusting, sometimes,” Isabela said from the bottom of the stairs.
“Ah, I can’t help what your Mamá, brings out in me,” he said in response.
“Pa, gross,” Isa said.
“Maybe you’ll get another sibling?” he wiggled his eyebrows again.
A chorus of ‘Pa!’ ‘Eww, gross!’ ‘I’m honestly going to throw up!’
I raised my eyebrows, “I don’t know about that. We’re too old, Tïno.”
He laughed, “This family is full of the unexpected, Julieta.”
“Just go already!!” Isabela was shielding her eyes and not a second later, I was swept up the stairs and into our room. Safe to say I didn’t try to help with lunch or dinner that day...
