Random antivenin headcanons: Mosquitoes

Philippe gets bit by mosquitoes the most out of the three of them, something with the combination of having the largest surface area to get bit, but also being a sweaty human space heater (and thus easier for mosquitoes to find).

Corbeau, who ingests poison for fun frequently, inadvertently becomes a mosquito repellant. Not in that he keeps them away, but that any that bite him die very quickly after.

Paxton has skeeter syndrome, aka is allergic to mosquito bites, so he uses both his boyfriends as human shields when they come across a lot of mosquitoes.

"Do you think it's bad that I like my body hair?" Denise asks, pulling up the sleeve of her nightgown to reveal the thick, dark hairs obscuring her forearm tattoos. "Women don't usually..."

"Women can do whatever they want," Paxton says firmly. "I think the idea that body hair being gendered is stupid. I shave everywhere except down there because it makes me more comfortable. My sister Harmony doesn't shave at all. I know Taunie and Urbain constantly argue about it. Every person is different."

She runs a hair through her beard, noting the specks of white. "Even if I keep my beard?"

"Won't make you less of a woman," Paxton says. "The only thing that would make you 'less of a woman' is you deciding you don't want to be one."

"I'm a woman," Denise says, and it's equally much a reassurance to her as it is a confirmation to Paxton. "I think I want my beard gone, though."

"Then you do that," Paxton says, and he reaches up to pet her face. "I bet the only reason you kept it is because of some real embarrassing tattoo under it."

That makes her laugh, and it takes close to a minute before she's able to be serious again. "No tattoos," she promises. "Thank you, Pax dearest."

Happy Pride Month everyone! Remember 4 months ago when the CEO of this platform harassed and chased a trans woman off this website just for posting her transition timeline, then chased her to other social media platforms to continue harassing her, and threatened to call the FBI if she continued disputing the multiple dubious terminations of her blogs that did not violate tumblr's terms of service in any way? And despite tumblr staff insisting that the CEO was acting against their interests, the broad transmisogyny evident in the site's culture and moderation policy has still not been adequately addressed?

one genre of fanfiction that seems to have mostly disappeared since i became an adult is shenanigans-type fics. like not exactly crack but just "the gang goes to 7-11" type, extremely low-stakes plot stories. the beach episodes of fanfiction. i just feel like i don't see those around so much anymore. whered they go. i miss them :(

i went into the library to check if a book i want to read had been returned yet (it has but i forgot to bring something to carry it in so i didnt borrow it today), and out of curiosity i checked project hail mary’s availability and

17 copies across the 4 libraries in the council, all of which have been borrowed, plus 25 reservations. theres also a korean copy thats been borrowed and has two reservations (didnt take a pic of that), and those are just physical copies of the book, we also have e-books and audiobooks which i didnt check the availability of

Okay out of curiosity I checked my own library's website, and there are over 100 reservations on almost all of the copies of the book.

I'm not kidding.

I'm not screenshotting the whole list because it is long af but. All of them have over 90 reservations, most of them over 100. What the fuck

I thought about this more and like. there is no way all of these reservations are unique individuals, that's too many people considering the population that is covered by this library. So probably people are putting in reservations and choosing multiple, right?

No. You can only choose the pick-up location when reserving a book, not the copy.

Like....1.5% of the population covered by this library have a reservation on this book.

What the hell.

Usually when you put a hold on something, it's a title-level hold, aka any copy, so you get the first available one. You *could* do a copy-level hold, aka This Specific Copy, but that's obviously gonna take a little longer, and there's not really a reason to do that (unless there are different volumes or editions of a book under the same bibliographic record).

So my original guess was that those numbers were all title-level holds, so just 101 people total in line for whichever copy becomes available first. But some of them have a different number?? So many some people did an item-level hold on some of them? But why would they do that??

Not gonna lie bud I am So confused. Can you go to the library and tell them you have a librarian friend on tumblr and they are confused

Oooo okay that makes a lot of sense!!! I am also very invested in this now so I will go to the public library soon and let you know what I find out. The mystery of this will be solved!

I asked the librarians at the front desk, and unfortunately do not possess a gaydar (I think they forgot to give me one in my Queer Bundle), so I did not have the guts to mention your username, I am so sorry T^T

The librarians I asked actually didn't know the answer to the question either, and has the same guess as you! And the same amounts of confusion KFJSKJFKS

However, I got them curious enough about it that they said they would ask one of their co-workers who was coming in later that day who would likely know the answer, and asked for my email address so they could send me the answer! Here is what they said (but edited so I don't doxx myself):

"We spoke earlier today at [specific library branch] about the reservation queue numbers and how they work. I've received some answers, and it turns out it's pretty close to what I thought!

"The reason you may see different hold numbers for the same book is that sometimes patrons place a hold when they see a copy is available at a specific branch. For example, if someone sees a copy housed at [Example Branch] permanently, and they reserve that specific copy, it creates a separate record in our catalogue system vs placing a hold on a copy that is designated to float between several branches. This is usually the case for our [further away branches] since we can't get out there as often for deliveries.

"Another reason is that when we order more copies of a book that's already in our catalogue and add them after the fact, it initially creates another queue list. Our Library Technicians regularly review these records in the backend and merge the hold queues to ensure that patrons maintain their place in line and that those at the top of the list receive the book first. So, the good news is that there's no way to cheat the system haha."

I had a lot of fun looking into this, so thank you @cementw4underscores for posting about the reservations in your library in the first place, and @lesbrarian for suggesting I go ask my local librarians about it! (thus giving me the courage to actually do that lol)

I started typing because I was like "omg crochet I love crochet I should tell people how awesome crochet is" and then I just started yapping about a few crafts that people might be interested in doing and a bit about how to get the materials for them so uh.... yeah if you want to hear about that here you go!

I highly recommend crocheting!!! I find it so fun, and personally less daunting than knitting because if your work unravels then you just redo a stitch or two. With knitting you could accidentally drop the working loops off the needles and then uhh. You can still fix it!! But it's more complicated, so I find crocheting less stressful. Also note, there are a lot of different things you can make using crochet, and you might enjoy making one type and not another (like clothes vs. plushies).

Also, embroidery is a lot of fun and the cost of materials is less (a skein of embroidery thread lasts you a long time as does a pack of sewing needles. and the fabric can just be whatever you have already that you are willing to mess around on!)

For acquiring yarn for less, because the prices can really suck depending on where you live (they are ass where I am): you can get it secondhand at thrift stores. As well, sometimes people will try to debulk their big yarn stashes by selling a bunch on facebook marketplace for a good price!
