My dear lgbt+ kids, 

If you listened to transphobes, you might assume that the whole concept of “separate toilets for women” was designed with women’s safety in mind - and it was, but not in the way you might think. 

Gender-segregated bathrooms emerged in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century (so around the time women were entering the workforce in greater numbers in the US and Europe). But the idea behind that wasn’t rooted in empowerment or feminism: 

Women were seen as fragile and weak. Public spaces (and especially higher education or the workforce) were considered unsuitable for women. So, it was believed women needed separate “restrooms”, assuming they might faint due to their naturally "delicate" health.

Separate bathrooms limited women’s access to education, work, and public life. This may seem counterintuitive at first glance, so let me explain: women’s restrooms were often located inconveniently… subtly discouraging women from staying in public spaces for extended periods. This was not about women’s safety, but about men wanting control over women. 

In Victorian ideals, women were supposed to be modest and “pure”, and this meant that they had to occupy distinctly different spaces than men . Separate bathrooms were a way of reinforcing their “proper” roles in society, emphasizing that their “real” place is in the home rather than in public or professional spaces.

The argument that we need “women only” bathrooms to protect women is not rooted in history or evidence. They were born out of sexism, not safety.

What do they do when they get locked up in Arkham together? Do the staff even allow them to be together or do they not allow inter patient relationships?

Depends on how seriously the asylum is written to be. In some instances, they share a cell and spend all their time together, but this also depends on how Ivy’s powers are written as well.

In BTAS, she’s nerfed and mostly has power to change plants biochemically. She can control them, but more in the way Harley can control the hyenas, through verbal/nonverbal commands. This is the ideal condition for them to be allowed near each other at all times.

On the extreme end of this, they’re separated, as Ivy is in a maximum security enclosure of some form or other. Through the Green, Ivy is still able to sense some plant life and flora, and Harley knows that Ivy trains as much of her senses on following Harley whenever she’s outside, so Harley will speak to her through flowers and weeds. If anyone messes with any wildflowers or dandelions that grow in the outer yard, she wrecks them with zero hesitation.

In instances where they’re allowed to be together, it’s nonstop. They’re the snickering mean girls in the corner that everyone knows they’re shit talking about them. They’re constantly touching, braiding each other’s hair, whispering in each other’s ears, and sometimes lowkey making out because the guards can’t be assed to give two shits about it and their doctors are like “whatever keeps them from murdering the other inmates.”

i know the show wasnt super consistent with melissa's hair colour but im so miffed we went from this romantic honey blonde that literally shone in the sun

to this more bleach-y version (ignoring the bits in s6/5(?) where her hair's just straight up brown sometimes) because she while she does look so good and perhaps even mature, it just feels so less...superhero and more that one friend who's going through a really bad breakup they pretend isnt going on
