Pretend the Supergirl team called you in despair, trying to fix the next couple of episodes. What would you do? About Alex, J’onn, Kara, Lena, Lex, Leviathan, Brainy, Nia and Kelly (and William and Andrea)? You can cut whoever you want. You can choose any ship. You have basically unlimited budget to this last two/three episodes.
There’s really not much that could be done this close to the end of a season, but in a dream scenario? Here goes, buckle up…
Of course I’d wrap all this shit up and have Kara “die” in an epic, heroic, dramatic moment set to Blake Neely’s “Harnessing Anger” as she saves Lena in the midst of the Lex vs Leviathan showdown.
See, I’d have J’onn - with help from his Martian friends like M’Gann, along with Alex, Brainy and Dreamer battling Leviathan for the fate of the world as the rain falls down from a hazy sky due to someone from Leviathan controlling the weather, while Lex turns his attention to Lena, furious after she finally snaps out of it and turns on him. Literally we have an epic moment of truth, where the group needs her help, but Lex is about to kill Lena. Kara ultimately puts her faith in her friends’ ability to stand on their own, and makes Lena her priority - choosing to save her in that moment, and stopping Lex once and for all, though she dies right in front of her. The group succeeds in stopping Leviathan, only to turn and see the scene of a dead Kara laying in a shocked, mortified Lena’s arms. A tearful, horrified Alex desperately looks to J’onn saying Kara needs sun, and he communicates telepathically with his people and they have an idea. Next thing you know, he’s taking Kara in their ship and flying towards the sun, getting her closer and closer - until her eyes finally open and she’s brought back to life, and her first word? “Lena?” asked in concern. J’onn smiles in understanding as she slips back into unconsciousness.
The next time she opens her eyes, it’s in her apartment. Night time. Everyone’s around her as she’s laid on the couch in lounge clothes. Everyone’s relieved. Alex holds her hand and they have a gentle silent sister moment of love and relief. But almost immediately, Kara’s looking for someone - and the group parts when Kara’s gaze finds that someone. Lena. In her apartment. With everyone else she loves. Alex looks from one to the other, and they all decide to give them some privacy. Kara sits up. They hold eye contact. Neither knows what to say. Kara finally pushes up, trying to stand, but she’s still a little weak. She stumbles and Lena rushes forward to half catch her. They stand close. And there’s almost, almost an unusual tension there that makes the audience go “Umm…?” until Lena launches at her and pulls her in tightly for a hug filled with so much relief. There’s quiet tears in both their eyes as Lena whispers “Don’t ever leave me again.” and Kara says “I promise.”
But then reality starts to set in for them both as they realize there’s so much to cover and it can’t just be this easy, for Kara especially. She pulls back and says, “Lena…” and Lena says desperately, “Not now, Kara. Please. We’ll get to all that. Can we… can you just be you, and me be me. Just for tonight.”
And in this moment, it’s clear how much Lena’s missed Kara all this time. And Kara nods and they sit back down and wind up side by side in the same position as that time in Season 2 in her office when Kara promised she’ll always protect her. And now, she’s officially fulfilled that promise. She literally died protecting her. And as we fade to black on Season 5, that’s the image we end with, Kara and Lena coming full circle to that moment on the other couch all those years ago. What happens next and where they go from here… is to be seen in Season 6.
But then we have the little epilogue moment as we fade back in for our cliffhanger, showing a disgusted and defeated Lex being locked away in prison with the bars being shut behind him, which match cuts to - Eve in her own cell in her own prison, some sort of wave caused in the big showdown having disrupted the AI in her head, and thus she’s regained her consciousness. And she. Looks. Pissed.
So for Season 6, we pick up almost immediately after. Like, the very next morning. Our opening scene is Kara and Lena waking up on the couch, having fallen asleep. This time, there’s a slightly more awkward and obvious moment as Lena is practically laying on top of Kara. They clear their throats and sit up awkwardly as Kara’s phone rings and she sees it’s William. As Lena slips off to use the restroom, Kara thinks long and hard and she ultimately answers. We never see the call or hear him because the actor is gone already. We just make it clear later in the episode that she told him it wasn’t going to work and she tried but she just doesn’t feel that way about him, and thus he’s gone back to London now that Leviathan and Lex have both been stopped and Kara isn’t interested and he doesn’t want to make it awkward.
In the rest of the season premiere, J’onn’s people ask him to go back with them and now that the world is safe he agrees, leaving Alex in charge of The Tower.
J’onn - gone, but can always come back for cameos or at most as recurring
Alex - takes charge of The Tower, no longer answering to anybody. Finally in charge of herself and her own mission, and able to do things her way. Would love to see Alex with that level of freedom. That excitement would lend itself well to revisiting the issues established between Alex and Kelly regarding concern for Alex’s safety, but ultimately lead them to be closer than ever as they become engaged, etc. One of the cases she works can result in an abandoned baby or toddler, and thus Alex has the family and career she’s always wanted. So we get to see her be a mom and a badass, and neither detracts from the other.
Eve - On the heels of Lex being captured and her regaining her awareness, she’s pissed. Any forgiveness she had for Lena is long gone because of what’s happened to her, and to Lex. She’s gone nutso once and for all, and decided she’s DONE being the sidekick, the assistant, the girl in the shadows who gets used. She feels like it’s her time to ‘shine’ and since she knows where Lex’s secret cache is, she uses it to start to build her own army of ‘assistants and sidekicks and shadows’ with her finally in charge, which would include some variations of DC Comics characters/villains they haven’t utilized yet, as well as old villains from previous seasons who’ve now escaped after the destruction of the DEO. Also in her little criminal army -
Andrea Rojas - initially removed from CatCo after Lena forcibly buys it back and Andrea, having worked with Leviathan at the end of the previous season, seemingly flees, only to return as part of Eve’s little criminal army as her right hand working closely together to seek revenge against Lena.
I think making Eve the main villain would make the hero vs villain tale much more personal and intimate for Season 6, which is what the show is missing lately. That’s what Season 1 had, aliens focused on revenge against Kara due to the actions of her family. Now, we’d have aliens and humans working together seeking revenge against Lena and Kara over their actions over the course of the whole series. It allows us to bring things back to the start in a way, as Eve and everyone she’s working with wants vengeance. It sets up some moments and battles that are insanely intense and dramatic and personal, but also fun, sometimes funny and absolutely delicious. And because of the show’s lowered budget, it makes the showdowns more intimate and less “world is ending because of some shady organization or ultimate evil” stakes since that’s been done to death enough already anyway.
Meanwhile, with Lena back to owning CatCo (a symbol of apology), she wants to return it to its previous glory as people now want traditional, real news after the failure of Obsidian Tech and Andrea’s click bait fake news nonsense. Lena asks Kara to help her run it side by side, thinking if they work together on something more “normal” and get back to “normal life”, maybe it’ll make things easier to transition back to… them being them. Kara happily agrees, especially when Lena mentions how she’s begun to see Kelly for regular sessions to help her with… everything. Little do they know of course, their pasts are soon about to come back to haunt them in the form of Eve and old foes and they’ll be working together on far more than just CatCo.
So as Kara and Lena get to work together at CatCo once again, Nia will be back in the role of Kara’s protege and up and coming hotshot reporter, while also reuniting with Brainy and they get to be happy together.
And Kara and Lena slowly ease back into their friendship, though now, it’s laced with something more. Something growing. Something romantic. Which evolves at a proper pace over the course of the season, giving you your endgame.
Apologies if I missed anything major. This was on the fly.
