“You ever want to try them?” Ilya asked lightly as he and Shane fixed a salad for the upcoming dinner with Yuna and David, both of them high on nervous energy, post-sex glow, and the strange feeling of being known by someone other than themselves.

Shane, who was chopping tomatoes, paused and looked at Ilya. “What, tomatoes? I have them all the–”

Ilya resisted the urge to kiss his stupid boyfriend silly right then and there. “No,” he answered, rolling his eyes. “‘Nice boys from Montreal.’” He’d tried not to let David’s question bother him earlier, but it’d been bouncing around in his head like a stubborn pingpong ball.

Shane’s hand on the knife froze, and when he blinked at Ilya he still looked a bit confused. “Ilya, I don’t like nice boys from Montreal. I like you.”

But of course, now his stupid, hateful brain had taken ahold of the situation and skated off with it, soaring down the rink in his mind towards the goal. “So you have tried other men?” he demanded, eyes narrowing just a little.

Now it was quiet. Shane obviously was struggling to find the right answer to that question, and Ilya knew he was being unfair. How many girls had he fucked before they were exclusive?

Finally, the shorter man sighed and looked him in the eyes resignedly. “Yes, Ilya. Two.”

He shouldn’t have asked. Fuck, he really shouldn’t have asked. Because now he was spiralling, gripping the counter until his knuckles turned white, hating two men he’d never met before. “And they were nice? They were Montreal men?” he grumbled, eyes cast downward.

“No.”

Again, his mind skated ahead of him, reaching. “They were not nice?” he snapped, whirling, ready to wage wars. “They hurt you? Where, Shane? Who? I will–”

But finally, Shane reached for him, directing his face so he was forced to look him in the eye, melting under chocolate brown and freckles and unfair beauty. “No, Ilya. They were…fine, I guess. They didn’t do anything wrong, exactly, they just…”

“What, Shane?” he asked, hissing through his teeth, wanting to throw a fit and run away and curl in on himself and cry all at the same time.

“They weren’t you.”

It looked like it pained Shane to admit this. Like he, too, wanted to run away and hide. But Ilya had no idea why, because suddenly, everything was right in the world again. “Not…” he breathed, needing to hear the words over and over.

Shane seemed to always innately understand what Ilya needed. It was soul-chrushing in the best way. “You, yeah,” he murmured. “I tried…to find someone else. To make my life fuckin’ easier that this, you know?”

Ilya laughed a humorless laugh, because fuck, loving Shane was easy, but the world made it so incredibly difficult. “Yes.”

“I couldn’t. It wasn’t just about…being gay. It was you. Asshole.” He spat the last word with little menace, lips curving upward as he did.

And it made Ilya so giddy, heart soaring, that he admitted it before he could stop himself. “You are not alone,” he murmured, grinning. “I think of you in bed. A lot. Is why I had to stop, with other people. I was nervous I would say your name.”

Shane’s answering smile lit up the entire kitchen. “Damn, Rozanov. You really like me, huh?”

Ilya just beamed back. “No. I think I am concussed, maybe. I will see doctor after this. I am concerned for my health, It is–” but he had to cut himself off with a laugh, dodging Shane’s swat to his shoulder.

Imagine this: Shane and Ilya are on the same team, they are out, their teammates are cool with it, whatever. But the rookies are ... curious. And so they draw straws or they play some kind of little game and whoever loses has to go up to their Actual Captain Ilya Rozanov and Three Times Cup Winner Shane Hollander and ask THE QUESTION.

So this rookie walks up to Shane and Ilya, who are having lunch and talking strategy and he knows: he is going. to. die.

Ilya Rozanov is going to kill him. And then Shane Hollander will kill him again.

But his fellow rookies are giving him thumbs up and egging him on from underneath the table at the other side of the room where they are hiding, and he did lose their stupid game and he can't chicken out now so ...

The two hockey legends look up at him when he approaches. Ilya with a friendly smile, Shane with a questioning frown. The rookie takes a deep breath. "How do you decide who tops?" It comes out in a strangled, weirdly high-pitched voice. He closes his eyes. The question is out. He will die.

No one says a word. He opens his eyes. Ilya is looking at him like this:

Ilya (lauging his ass off): Is simple.

Shane (looking like he wants to murder everyone in this room and then himself): Rozanov ...

Ilya: Rock, paper, scissors. If I win, I top. If Hollander wins, he bottoms.

need someone who cares about hockey more than i do to write a fic where shane is forced to retire before he feels ready and svetlana has gotten frustrated with her MHL job because team management never listens to her (due to the misogyny) so she quits and talks shane into starting a hockey analysis podcast together and it's called something like "hockey with hot people" or "puckbunnies" or "soft hands" (shane does not like this but svetlana understands the importance of branding) and it's 98% Serious Hockey Talk BUT they do have a dedicated segment called "why does ilya rozanov owe me money" wherein guests tell their worst ilya stories and after hearing them out shane and svetlana decide how much money ilya owes the guest. ilya is never invited onto the podcast.

ok this is mostly a collection of ilya "good top" rozanov headcanons that took on a life of their own

ilya's reputation as a "womanizer" and a "ladies man" takes hold pretty early in his career

he's got a girl in every port, the man's having a lot of sex everywhere

(most of his teammates know that he's got a special fondness for jane in montreal, but that's neither here nor there)

shane genuinely isn't jealous, what ilya does when they're apart isn't his business, as long as he has ilya's undivided attention when they're together, which he absolutely does

someone makes a joke on twitter that all of the women he's banged ought to start a club

this leads to someone making a shirt that says "i hooked up with ilya rozanov and all i got was this lousy t-shirt" and starts selling it on etsy. a bunch of other people make copycat shirts and variations

the fad fades pretty quickly, but there's a brief moment in time where they seem to be everywhere, and jane texts lily every time he sees someone wearing one out in the wild

lily mostly responds with laughing emoji, but one time he responds with "i think that one's real i remember her" and shane has to remind himself that he's not jealous and it's not his business and he has to delete the picture so he doesn't go back and study it

not long after boston wins the cup, a package arrives at shane's secret sex condo, it's a version of the shirt that says "i slept with STANLEY CUP WINNER ilya rozanov and all i got was this lousy t-shirt"

shane is mortified, but also more than a little turned on. at some point he wears it under his other clothes when he meets up with ilya for a hook-up and ilya goes absolutely feral when he sees it

years later, when the whole dallas kent situation hits the fan, people start taking to twitter talking shit about other NHL players (and other pro-athletes in general) who treated them poorly

someone tweets out "i've never really talked about this because i'm not one to kiss and tell and it's really no one's business, but i just want to say that in like 2014 i hooked up with ilya rozanov and he was the most considerate lover i'd ever had. i was relatively inexperienced and so down bad for him that i would have done anything he said, but he checked in with me every step of the way, and *also* gave me crazy orgasms to boot"

and women start coming out of the woodwork responding to the thread with similar sentiments, that he'd set the bar for future hookups and relationships

and people are like "damn, consent king ilya rozanov, didn't have that on my bingo card this year" and "this man was really fucking his way across north america as a service to *us* teaching millennial women to have higher standards for their partners"

someone tweets out "i hooked up with ilya rozanov and all i got was multiple orgasms and really high expectations about consent" and it goes stupid viral

several months later when the fanmail debacle happens and hollanov are outed, that particular corner of social media has another meltdown along the lines of "and he's even bisexual? this makes so much sense"

someone jokes about getting shane a shirt, since he's a member of the club, this tweet makes its way back to harris, who feels like he should warn shane and ilya

ilya posts a picture to instagram of his husband lounging, wearing The Shirt, his underwear, and nothing else. the shirt is very obviously not new, has been worn and washed many times

in the picture, shane's left hand is draped casually across his stomach, wedding ring glinting in the light, as if to remind everyone: this one's mine

‘The age of oversized shirts is over, Potter,’ Draco announced, throwing open the front door. ‘I may be a wizard with no knowledge of Muggle culture’ —he marched to where Harry sat awkwardly on the sofa— ‘but you're half Muggle, and I demand that you at least test their products instead of drowning in Weasley’s awful jumpers.’ Harry froze as Draco heaved himself (and a large, lumpy bag) onto the cushion beside him. Draco spoke rapidly, and in the tired, restless state that the past day had left Harry in, he missed rather a lot of what Draco said. Pretending he’d caught the general gist, Harry eyed the dubious bag. Curiosity, he could do curiosity. Not too much, of course; he didn’t want things to fall apart quicker than they needed to. ‘So...’ Harry avoided Draco’s unfaltering stare. ‘You have a bag?’ ‘Oh—’ Draco coughed. ‘I have a few different things.’ His voice wavered just a little, and for someone who’d confidently barged in without warning, Draco’s assertion seemed to be almost a question. It could be the jumper Harry lent him. Or the Quidditch shirt. It was probably both. Fuck. Everything was going wrong, and it was all his bloody fault. He didn’t need to say anything. He shouldn’t have fucking said anything. And now everything was going to be ruined— ‘So uh... I got tape... not— not duct tape or anything,’ Draco stuttered. The anxiety hidden in his fumbled words drew Harry’s immediate attention. ‘And then there were these compression-top-binder-sorts-of-things, which were all different, so I got three. The, uh... the lady helped show me how to put everything on.’ Like a fish, Harry mindlessly opened and shut his mouth. Tape? Compression tops? What? Draco hurriedly tugged three binders from his bag, followed by two rolls of tape- one of which fell onto the floor and rolled under the sofa. ‘I can return them if you want, the binders I mean, but I can resize them with magic, you know... if it doesn’t end up fitting right..?’ Harry didn’t understand. Or, he couldn’t bring himself to ask- to confirm anything. Draco looked at him the way Teddy had, when offering him a fragile, white dandelion. His name might have been uttered, but Harry hadn’t heard it. The world stopped— for a moment— for him. An ache spread across his chest- a result of the mingling self-loathing, affection, embarrassment, and unripe euphoria. Still, words did not come, and Harry struggled to regulate his breathing. A day. It had been a day since he’d come out to Draco. Just a single day since he’d ripped off the bandages and choked out his secret... to his very gay boyfriend. He hadn’t slept. Harry had just let shame bite at him, whispering promises of a breakup— Cool fingertips brushed against his cheek. Worried grey eyes met his. ‘Harry?’ ‘I— I thought—’ Harry’s vision blurred. ‘I thought you were going to... ‘Cause I’m not—’ His voice broke, and tears pricked at his eyes. Pulling Draco onto his lap, Harry buried his face into his boyfriend’s cashmere shoulder. Draco slipped his fingers into Harry’s dark hair and pressed a gentle kiss to the top of his head. ‘Silly man,’ Draco murmured into his curls. ‘As if I’d ever choose to let go of you.’

Heated Rivalry AU where the relationship reveal happens because David Hollander's phone gets hacked and approximately 5,000 pictures and videos of Shane and Ilya being cute (both together and individually) get dumped onto the internet.

No accusations can be made about them throwing games for each other, because there are several videos of them being super competitive about absolutely nothing. For example, one of the dumped files is a video of the two playing Monopoly (filmed discretely from a hallway). They look about ready to murder each other. And then, off-screen, Yuna's voice - in a Mom Voice TM, of course - calls, "Boys, you better not be doing what I think you are!"

Ilya says, "Nyet, Mama," at the same time Shane says "No, Mom!" And in perfect sync they hide evidence of the game, not a single movement between them wasted.

There's also a video of them trash talking each other for being slow as they race to put away the most clean dishes from the dishwasher.

It's a whole genre. Play-fighting as they bring out a measuring tape to literally measure who shoveled the most snow from the driveway, bringing up hockey stats as they argue over who deserves to hold the tv remote, etc.

And, of course, Ilya isn't upset at David for the whole incident. Ilya is crying, though, because it's clear from looking through the photos how much David absolutely loves Ilya. It's so apparent through the captured moments how much David adores his second son.
